remember me?!

oh hi!  remember me?!?!  i mentioned a little bit about my current wifi situation on instagram, but let me go into a little more detail.  i am currently finishing my master’s degree by teaching on the navajo reservation in arizona. so far it’s going really really well, and the only hiccup is that i don’t have wifi in my room (i’m living in the dorm attached to the high school with other students).  i’ve been able to pick up wifi here and there, and a kind teacher told me i can pop by his place whenever i need to use the internet, so hopefully i will be able to start posting again. i did start another blog to record my journey, mostly for family and school purposes, but feel free to follow me over there as well if you’re interested: leahgoeswest.wordpress.com (though again, it’s been difficult for me to post).IMG_3377  truly this experience has already been pretty incredible, and though not everything has been smooth, nor will it be in its entirety, i’m so excited to be on this adventure that i’ve been planning for a long time.  if anyone has any suggestions of things i need to see/places i need to go while i’m in the southwest, please let me know!! i want to go any and everywhere.  i’m currently spending labor day weekend in durango, colorado and don’t ever want to leave this state so that’s a new development!IMG_3407 i have a very limited selection of “things” with me – makeup, skincare, clothes, accessories – so i thought it might be fun to look at the things that i’m missing the most. nothing like being separated from your belongings for 4 months to show you what you really love.

// s t y l e //

coach duffle bag // i have mentioned this bag before on the blog, but this is my favorite purse of any that i own.  it’s a vintage (i think 70s) black leather coach duffle, which is one of their most iconic shapes.  it’s essentially a big bucket bag with an adjustable strap – so i either wear it close to my underarm or even crossbody if it’s extra heavy.  it’s such a classic shape and style and fits my everyday life. i miss you bb! i’m sorry i couldn’t bring you!

baggy levi’s 501s // i have a bunch of levi’s but i only brought my 501 skinnies.  my baggy ones are perfectly soft, worn in, and ripped, and i love that they’re slightly cropped (i cut them myself naturally) and slightly too big.  i love them for every season, with sneakers, with birks, with army boots.  i actually thought that i packed them, but apparently not!  i have no clue what wash i have, but i linked a similar looking pair.

black skinny strap rainbows // i absolutely live in my black rainbows all summer long (and every pair of rainbows i’ve ever had since 7th grade).  i didn’t bring them in favor of my birks, but i wish i had these just for simplicity’s sake.  i do find myself wearing socks with birkenstocks quite a bit these days, which is probably not a habit i should get into!!!!

cape cod bracelets // i love my two little silver bangles with silver or gold screw balls.  is anyone else familiar with these?  i usually wear them during the summer and then phase them out come fall, but i didn’t do that this year and i don’t have them with me.  i go through phases of wearing a lot of necklaces or a lot of bracelets, and right now i’m forgoing both to be simple and under-the-radar.  no fun!bb feather // b e a u t y //

igk 1995 shampoo // i’m in love with this texturing shampoo.  it just wasn’t feasible for me to bring something so particular and that i don’t use every time i wash my hair, but this is my favorite texturing shampoo of the few i’ve tried.  the r+co cactus shampoo is my second in command, but the 1995 is just a little grittier.

dedcool fragrance 02 // i don’t wear perfume enough to justify bringing it (i just brought my usual sandalwood fragrance oil), but i really miss this scent.  it’s one of those that just melts into your skin and seems like what you actually smell like, a little bit woodsy and masculine, a little bit clean, a little bit warm.  sandalwood is my favorite scent of all time, and that is the base of 02 with something extra.IMG_3349bb dorm. . .

the lazy girl’s guide to makeup

here on baby bohemian, i’m all about looking completely natural with a little oomph.  i’m about wearing makeup to make myself feel put together, while looking like i’m barely wearing any at all.  makeup is my me time, my hobby.  so here are my recommendations for a makeup bag that is perfect for the lazy girl, the makeup minimalist, the product junkie that doesn’t want to appear like a product junkie.  the products below could serve as a great beginner’s makeup bag or just nice products to have on hand.  with my upcoming travels, this will act as the former for me and i’m very pleased with the products that will be accompanying me on my journey…if i can keep it to just these…bb lazy girl2.jpg// skin & base //

hydrated, glowing skin is an absolute essential.  i like a very light, sheer base that evens things out ever so slightly, regardless of the condition my skin is in (currently: acne-ridden).  and to make a light base work the best, it’s all about what’s underneath.  for glowing, hydrated skin that isn’t shimmery or glittery, check out the bliss ex-glow-sion.  now this is a moisturizer more than a makeup product, so if you have dry skin like me i recommend you wear it more as a primer, but if you are on the oilier side you could use this just as your morning moisture layer.

as far as that sheer base goes, my current favorite is my tinted sunscreen, the clinique city block spf 25; a mineral spf with a perfect tint for my skintone.  this is a sunscreen with a tint, not a tinted moisturizer with sunscreen, so i feel really good wearing it and like the teeny bit of coverage it gives.bb lazy girl3.jpgundereye concealer is where i differ from many: i rarely wear it.  i like a hint of darkness under the eyes, but if i ever feel too dark i always reach for the glossier stretch concealer in light.  because this is a sheer, very emollient formula it looks incredibly natural while adding the bare minimum of brightness.  i don’t find that this creases or goes greasy on me, but i’ve heard from many that setting with a powder is required.  i personally like the hydration it gives, but this is all about personal preference of course!  i also love this for areas of the face that are a little more red or angry and need a bit more help; i just purchased the medium shade for my summer skin.

a high coverage concealer is also an essential, and the nars radiant creamy is second to none.  i’ve tried others that i’ve liked, but i always back to this.  for blemishes, this is a must have.  my trick is to let it set for a minute or two before patting it in – this gets the coverage just right.  i wear vanilla for most of the year and creme brulee in the summer.

// shade & highlight //

bronzer is a non-negotiable product for me.  even if i’m wearing absolutely no makeup whatsoever, i need a hint of bronzer to make me feel alive.  i’m fair, but feel like i apply bronzer in such a way that i never look orange or over-the-top.  the trick is a fluffy brush and the right undertone.  with my pink skin, i like something that is neutral to cool and the littlest bit red; this looks the most natural on me.  my current favorite is the limited edition marc jacobs coconut bronzer, but the hourglass diffused bronze light is another item i don’t ever want to be without.bb lazy girl6.jpgblush depends on the day, but when i remember it i love it.  i go between powder and cream, preferring my powders to be matte and my creams to be sheeny.  i just found the cargo blush in catalina at tj maxx ($4.99!) and it offers the perfect hint of brightness to my face while still being subtle.  if you want to have just one blush in your makeup bag, i recommend it being a somewhat neutral one that you won’t get sick of.  the it cosmetics blush in naturally pretty ticks those boxes for my complexion.  my cream blush of choice at the moment is my olio e osso balm in 02 french melon.  very sheer but glowy, sunkissed perfection that has the same healthy effect on the lips.

to be as natural as possible, highlighters have to be creamy and glowy – no shimmer in sight.  rms is a great brand to turn to for this, and my ultimate one is the champagne rose luminizer.  this is incredibly natural on my skin because of the light nude undertone and the pink reflect.  this of course will depend on your skin tone, but look for something that gives you a sweaty shine and as little actual color as possible.  a runner up in this category is the make dew pot.

// eyes & lips //

if i’m in the mood for eye shadow, it’s typically a matte brown.  my favorite is jane iredale cappucino, but i also just snagged the too faced natural matte palette (also at tj maxx – $14) which has a nice variety of soft matte tones.  i’m glad i was able to get the original packaging – i really don’t like one they just released!  if i’m doing a shimmer, it’s usually a taupe erring on the side of brown, and man do i have a wide variety of those.  my favorite right now is the chanel ombre premiere shadow in talpa, but there is definitely no need to have such an expensive shadow.  this was a birthday splurge back in january.  curled lashes and a coat of mascara are all i really need to feel complete, but i love having a little bit of a grungy eye.

my favorite mascara is the w3ll people expressionist – it’s lengthening and natural but gives me the natural oomph i want.  most days i wiggle it through the roots of my lashes for natural-looking thickness.  the new glossier mascara looks extremely similar to this, which i find interesting, but nothing will replace this dude for me.bb lazy girl7.jpglips are another category that i like to go as simple as possible with.  i love to buy fun lipsticks – almost always matte – but actually wearing them on a daily basis is not as attainable.  i’m getting better though!  my favorite matte which is now discontinued is the nars pure matte lipstick in montego bay, but i recently picked up the l’oreal colour riche matte lipstick in matte-sterpiece and it’s that perfect peachy pink nude that’s very hard to find.  & other stories cone marshmallow is another favorite that again is difficult to find – i’m always on the hunt for a subtle peachy pink.  i mentioned the laura mercier velour extreme matte in vibe in my may picks and that is just a hair darker than the l’oreal.bb lazy girl4.jpgbb lazy girl5.jpgif i’m in the mood for a red or brighter lip, i typically opt for a stain.  the body shop lip & cheek stain in pink hibiscus is a dead-on dupe for benefit benetint, without the nasty ingredient list.  and if i want some shine the body shop gloss in sugar glaze is the only colored one lip gloss i own (it’s a soft pink sheen) – otherwise i opt for the wet n wild clear gloss.bb lazy girl1.jpget voila!  a very edited but complete makeup bag.  what are your makeup must haves?  anything i’m missing?

daily creativity with traveler’s notebook

as you may or may not know, i used to manage a small stationery and custom invitation store.  stationery and school supplies have always been a huge passion of mine, but i never before realized that there is an entire community that exists and thrives with these passions at the center of it.  when i took that job, it was more for management and marketing experience, but it transformed into a greater appreciation for stationery items and paper goods, and the art, dedication, and flair behind them.  though i no longer work at this store, the world of paper will always be very near and dear to my heart and i greatly enjoy finding new brands and interesting products.

i recently got it into my head that i would like to purchase a traveler’s notebook.  these notebooks are essentially leather covers that you can completely customize inside.  you can have a number of notebooks, agendas, and/or folders inside at one time, and use the notebook for whatever purpose feels right.  the size of the notebook is unique in that it is relatively skinny and long, but this makes it perfect for writing and keeping organized.  i finally purchased my own a few weeks ago, and decided on the dark brown leather cover.  from my research, this looks the best suited to aging and wear and tear.bb tn1.PNG i did a ton of research on these notebooks before i decided to make the investment.  one of the best things that came out of my research was the discovery of an online (and brick and mortar if you live in california) shop called baum-kuchen, and the owner, wakako.  i have become absolutely entranced with this shop and the accompanying blog.  wakako is such a beautifully creative person that shares her love of the analogue life everyday through her shop, blog, and instagram.  i love following her and getting inspiration for my own creative, analogue journey.  she often reminds me that nothing has to be perfect; life is about creating color and connections, and exhibiting your happiness in whatever way you can.  for me, it is definitely on paper – through words, lists, ideas, and inspirations.  i do that here with my blog, but i also do it in my real life.  i take pictures, save things, buy things that feel special and important to me – and now i have a place to keep all of these artifacts in my traveler’s notebook.

i have especially enjoyed learning more about japanese culture through my research into traveler’s notebooks.  paper products are very important and treasured there, and there are a plethora of companies coming out of japan that have caught my eye, including traveler’s company (formerly midori) and the superior labor.bb tn2.PNG i absolutely adored using my traveler’s notebook for the first time on my trip to california.  i always collect so many artifacts while traveling – receipts, business cards, stickers, postcards, etc. – and now i have a place to store and expand on these little items.  i also kept daily logs of what i did and where i went, the best parts of the day, silly quotes and reminders of things that were discussed and experienced, etc… i cannot wait for more adventures with my traveler’s notebook, and to expand on what exactly my style will be.

finding home

haven home 1.jpglast summer, i met a sweet, sweet guy.  he is different from almost anyone else i have ever met.  we dated for a little bit and though things didn’t work out, i count him as a dear friend.

he is wild.  he is free.  he is natural.  he finds solace in the simple things, like driving for hours when you really, really don’t know where you’re going.  he is a climber, an adventurer, an athlete.  he is brave and kind.  he is shy, quiet, intelligent, and so charming.

he stopped to see me a few days ago, while driving across the country.  we met for coffee just off i-90.  he had stopped in wisconsin the night before to crash with some people he had only recently met.  he is the kind of guy who does that, and whom people invite to do that.  he shared his recent adventures with me, from ditching guards at the grand canyon so that he could continue hiking without a reservation to, literally, chasing waterfalls.  he told me about the tough times of being so alone and he told me about the inexplicable beauty of living so close to nature.  he shared lines from his favorite author, what his sisters are doing, his next location.

this friend reaches a part of me that few people reach.  he inspires me.  he makes me want to do more and be more – to follow my heart wherever that may lead.  he reminds me that life is not about achievements or possessions, it is about finding home, even if it’s in a sleeping bag in the back of your car.haven home 2.jpga few days after seeing my friend,  i was at anthropologie browsing the sale section, wasting time really.  i came across an indie magazine that i had never seen before, called haven.  perhaps serendipitously, the theme of this particular issue is home and finding it – inside people, coffee shops, dorm rooms.  finding it around a campfire, at the dinner table, in the back of a camper van.

for my whole life, home has meant where my parents are, where my family is, where i grew up.  and this, i am certain, will always be the case.  but in a few months, i will finally be able to create my own home.  it certainly won’t be my forever home, but it will be my first home.  it will be my own space to figure out what it really means to live.  it will welcome me and it will welcome others.  it will incorporate all the people that i have known, the things i have loved and learned, the experiences that make me who i am – as all homes do.  it will remind me of my friend and the lessons he has taught me.haven home 3.jpg

warm weather bound

tomorrow me and (part of) the fam are headed to one of my favorite places…california, duh!  you know i love a good travel post, so here’s what i’ve got coming along with me >>

makeup:bb warm weather bound makeup.jpgnothing too exciting, but i’m bringing along the usual nars creamy concealer in vanilla, w3ll people bronzer and brightening powders, gabriel eyeshadow in sable, rms swift shadow in tt-73 (side note, i haven’t talked about this shadow but it is amazing.  so soft, so beautiful and is glowy instead of shimmery.  i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing, even with nothing else on my face.  total love), tata harper volumizing lip&cheek in very charming, gressa lip boost in bare, mini bite beauty lipstick in meringue, shu uemera eyelash curlers, real techniques powder and expert face brushes, meow meow tweet baking soda-free lavender deodorant, and ursa major deodorant.  plus some hair twisties and clips, of course.

side note, does deodorant count as makeup or skincare?  probably skincare, but i’m bucking the system as per.

skincare (&liquids):bb warm weather bound skincare.jpgagain, the usual suspects with some fun stuff thrown in.  for example, i got a new sunscreen since my other one is too big for travelling and i’m not comfortable taking it out of its container and exposing it to sunlight.  so: mychelle sun shield, cetaphil lotion, mini trilogy mist, mini trilogy cleansing balm, dr tung’s floss (sexy), maison louis marie no.4 bois de balincourt perfume oil, weleda skin food, go-to face hero, dr. bronner’s hand sanitizer, living libations all seeing eye cream.

and the rest:bb warm weather bound plane bag.jpgthe other stuff in my plane bag includes another of the miss fisher series by kerry greenwood, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag.  just picked up those last two the other day and am really excited to start reading them.  wallet is from minor history, sunglasses from ray-ban, and headphones from bose – a lovely christmas from my sister quite a few years ago now.

jewelry: bb warm weather bound jewelry.jpgpretty pared down (for me) since i never end up wearing what i pack on trips anyways. tiffany silver bangle (my high school graduation present – it says dream a little dream), thin gold rings from various etsy shops, gold ball chain that can be worn as a necklace or bracelet, mermaidbyhand (now eliza sloane jewels) abalone ring, beaded earrings that were a gift from my sis, sarah chloe monogram necklace, salt&summit turquoise ring, vintage turquoise flower earrings which were a birthday present a few years ago, gold ear pins from etsy, and anthropologie gold ear jackets that were my birthday present this year.  dude, my family gives me good stuff!

so there you go my lovelies.  what are your travel must-haves?  what am i forgetting?!!

travel tips // the suitcase

IMG_4344.jpgIMG_4345.jpgfor the grand finale of my travel tips series, i bring you the suitcase.  first, check the weather.  second, do any necessary laundry.  third, roll, roll, roll!  but seriously, it really is best to roll your clothes.  they don’t get as creased, they take up less room, and it’s SO fun! anyways, on to the goods.  i’m going to london with my dad, so that means i have to be nicely put together and more conservative (less bohemian) than i might usually be.  also, yes, i realize the only piece of color here is my scarf and my green cords.  whatever!

here is literally what’s in my suitcase (i provided as many links as possible!):

bottoms //

2 pairs of cords – j.crew high rise in black and olive green

2 pairs of black jeans – bdg high rise and paige high rise (really old)

1 pair dark jeans – citizens rocket in icon

madewell skirt with leather details – black (really old)

black tights

tops //

zara batwing sweater – dark grey

zara crew neck – black and light grey (old)

random turtleneck – black

urban outfitters turtleneck – blue/green (old)

shoes //

black booties (old!)

brown lace up booties (old!)

outerwear //

jcrew cocoon coat – black

neff beanie – i have a couple in various colors

anthropologie scarf – floral with maroon background (old)

i hope this little series was somewhat helpful for any new travelers/overpackers/people who just like to read this stuff.  i would like to think that i’m a pretty experienced traveler (i hope that doesn’t sound ridiculously conceited) and i’ve learned over the years how to pack just the right amount of stuff.  let me know what your travel essentials are and if you think i’m on the right track!

travel tips // the carry-on

in this edition of travel tips, i’m talking all about the carry-on bag, aka the plane bag.  this is essential in travel preparation, cause if you have a shitty plane bag, gooooood luck.IMG_4341.jpgthe bag(s) //

sephora travel liquids bag // unnecessary buy but i can never find the right size ziploc!

travel tips // the makeup bag

when it comes to traveling, i find it’s always best to pack simply, whether it be your wardrobe, jewelry, makeup, etc.  it’s easy to say that “new city, new me” mantra and throw in those items that we own but never wear, but let’s face it, when we’re not at home we try to make ourselves feel as comfortable as possible.

my advice is to stick to what you know and love, and what works for you no matter the location or climate.  of course it’s fun to toss in the bits that we don’t use on a daily basis, but we really aren’t any more likely to wear something out of town than we are in our own city (no matter how much we try to convince ourselves of this).

in terms of cosmetics, a great tip is to bring a makeup item in each category, so you have options but are still pared back.  so here is my staples makeup bag – and staples don’t necessarily mean boring!IMG_4337.jpgface //
