glossier: a realistic review

i think it’s safe to say i’m a glossier og.  i purchased the phase 1 set only a few months after their launch, mostly after watching emily weiss’ video with leandra medine.  i’ve loved the brand since then and some of their products i just don’t think i could do my makeup or skincare routines without.  however with the introduction of “glossier reps” and the insane marketing all over instagram, which truthfully has more to do with said reps than the brand itself, i feel far less enamored with glossier than i used to be.  it is my honest opinion that the brand is insanely hyped up and not all of the products live up to that hype.  the reps that i see all over instagram can be extremely obnoxious, especially when you have the knowledge of the rewards they get for selling a certain amount of product, including trips to new york.  just feels like we are being used, you know?  it is important to remember that glossier is also incredibly expensive when you consider the amount of product you actually get, especially in their sunscreen and powder, so that is a huge turn off to me as well.glossier review1.jpgbut anyways, because of all these reasons, i think i am a fairly good person to give you a brand review.  like i said, some glossier products i really do adore, and some have missed the mark.  i relate very strongly to the “skincare first, makeup second” and overall undone aesthetic, but strongly dislike the marketing ploys.

please note, i am in no way trying to rag on glossier as i really do love the brand and the majority of their products, but as always i want to be completely honestly with you.  if we can’t discuss our likes and dislikes on our own blogs, what can we discuss?!

the original phase 1 //

perfecting skin tint // my all time favorite glossier product.  i couldn’t have created a better base product in my wildest dreams.  it’s glowy, lightweight perfection.  it evens out the skin the littlest bit and makes it look slightly more perfected, but not like you are wearing anything.  i typically wear this on it’s own but love to mix it with other tinted moisturizers that have a little more coverage or don’t have as much hydration.  i wear medium in the summer and light with a few drops of medium in the winter.

priming moisturizer // another staple in my makeup bag.  this is pretty exclusively my summertime moisturizer as it’s the perfect weight while not skipping out on hydration.  in the winter i layer this over my skincare and daily moisturizer, usually putting it on right before doing my makeup if i did my skincare earlier in the day.  it’s extremely lightweight and runny, but moisturizes and hydrates beautifully.  adds that coveted glossier glow.

rosewater spray // i feel like this is the one glossier product that never gets mentioned anywhere.  this is a pretty basic rosewater but sadly burned my eyes.  if i was extra careful and left my eyes closed for enough time after spraying i was fine, so i finished the bottle, but not a repurchase in my opinion.

balm dotcom // i only had the original balm dotcom this one time, but it’s a pretty basic vaseline-type skin salve.  nothing remarkable but somehow a necessity at the same time.  i’ll mention the flavors a bit later.  great size for throwing in your purse or backpack.glossier review2.jpgphase 2 //

boy brow // my shade is brown.  it took me a really long time to admit to liking this product.  and it only works for me if i wipe most of it off on a paper towel first.  this is really a pomade type product, so it is thick and heavy.  if i don’t take most of the product off, i hate how clumpy and thick feeling it is on my eyebrows.  however, when lightly applied, it offers a great amount of tint and volume, as well as hold, to the brows.

stretch concealer // i originally bought this in shade medium but found it to be incredibly orange on me, even if the shade was correct for my summer skin.  i gave that shade to my sister and i just bought light, so now that i am more pale this works better.  i would much rather use the rms concealer to the glossier, but those shades are far too yellow for me and this has the right amount of pink.  i don’t really conceal under my eyes, but i like this because it offers a little brightness without really hiding any darkness (i think that looks cool, ok?!).  also nice around the face on any redness but definitely won’t conceal blemishes.  i think this is a must have product for people that use concealers like this more than i do, but i am getting a lot of use out of it and i do like.

generation g // the second generation (he he) of these is far better than the first.  the first ones were not as pigmented and a lot more drying.  of the new generation i have zip, a beautiful poppy red, and cake, a peachy nude.  i truly love both of these shades and wear them quite frequently.  perfect for someone who loves a more blotted effect on the lips without the faff.  i have had other shades in the past, but these are my favorite.  i did a little comparison of the gen g’s with the colourpop blotted lips here.  i didn’t own these two particular shades when i did that review, so they have slightly changed my opinion.  i prefer the colourpop iteration but wish they had more wearable shades.  glossier review4.jpgothers //

haloscope // my sister got me the shade quartz for my birthday.  this is very comparable to my favorite rms living luminizer but with more oomph.  i love the glossiness that this gives and the shade is perfect on my fair skin.  i don’t apply it directly to my face as it does tug from the applicator, so i usually get a more subtle look.  i’m not sure if i will repurchase this as the living luminizer is mostly what i reach for, but i really do like having it and am happy to have tried it out.

priming moisturizer rich // another birthday present from my sissy!  isn’t she the best?  honestly i liked this more as a hand cream than a face cream.  the lavender scent was extremely overpowering and it felt very silicone-y on my skin.  even as a dry skinned person i find the regular priming moisturizer to be a far superior product.

milky jelly cleanser // this is a great product and one that i went through about 3 containers of.  however, even as a minimal makeup wearer, this is not an effective makeup remover.  that isn’t the biggest deal as i usually remove my makeup with a micellar water before washing my face anyways, but i do think it should be mentioned.  i have been drawn to more true cream cleanser lately, but i do think i will repurchase this again in the future.  it’s a pretty basic cleanser that doesn’t dry out the skin, so that’s a pretty big plus in my book.

moisturizing moon mask // this is another one of my “holy grail” glossier products.  it is so soothing on the skin and always feels cooling.  it is a pain to get off, but so worth it.  i apply this after any other mask that i use, as i always want to follow up with something hydrating after using something more drying or detoxifying.  also makes a fab hand mask.  glossier really nailed it here.

galaxy greens mask // this is a clay mask that i really do enjoy.  it’s not the best detoxifying mask i’ve ever used, but it’s a solid product.  this can be pretty intense so be careful and patch test first.  i use this only where i need it and never for the entire length of time recommended.  i’ve had my tub forever but probably won’t repurchase when i finally get through it.

flavored balm dotcoms // coconut is my everything!  originally the scent was quite nauseating but now i can’t get enough.  i like to put it on my lips, eyelids, and nostrils pretty much every night.  i also have the mint which is super refreshing and not fake smelling at all.  this is nice under the nose as well because you get the fresh scent and the tingle of the menthol.  great for when you have a cold!

the supers // i bought all 3 super serums when they first launched and they were definitely my introduction into serums and skincare layering.  i quickly realized, however, that they really weren’t doing much of anything.  the only one that i continue to use and have repurchased is super pure.  i apply that mostly to my chin where i have some hormonal breakouts and it really does help the redness and length of the activeness.  i saw absolutely no changes or benefits from neither super bounce nor super glow.  one thing to note: a product like super glow should be in a dark bottle with some sort of airtight pump because of the activeness of the ingredients, so the ingredients lose their potency far faster than you could ever use this all up.  if you are interested in purchasing one of the serums, i recommend the pure.glossier review3.jpgwhat are you glossier favorites?

there’s so much more to say

please come back.  please don’t let this be the end.  please tell me you’re just on another adventure.  you said you would kiss me in august.  won’t you keep that promise?

you beautiful, tortured soul.  don’t let this be the end.  you were happy when i saw you only one month ago.  you were eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and chopping wood and teaching kids how to play chess at the atheneum.  you were their hero.  you were happy with your medication, with your situation.  we talked about living on the golf course and being old decrepit teachers.  we were going to go to australia and live in new york.  there were lies and deceptions, but i don’t blame you or myself.  i think deep down we were honest with each other, even if people told us otherwise.

you called me lulu bean and held my hand.  we sat together, worlds apart from anyone else and that was good.  we locked your door and turned on the air conditioning and pretended to sleep.  maybe.

i saw you in a tee shirt only once.  you were at the green and put your arms on the register to reach out to me.  i saw all those horizontal lines, pale white, moving up your arms like the words that you were never able to speak.  i wasn’t surprised.  it made me love you.  more and more.  i got butterflies when i went to see you.  i felt guilty when i left.  i knew it was wrong, that i would get in trouble, but i couldn’t stay away.  not from you.

i miss your khakis and your button downs, the creases in your cheeks.  those blue eyes and that black hair.  it had finally grown back out.  the last words we spoke to each other were “i love you.”  and i love you.  i’ll still kiss you in august.

january picks

long-winded this month – my apologies!

beauty

shea moisture coconut & hibiscus range //  i’m really not loyal to any body wash – really they’re all pretty much the same in my opinion.  but somehow this one has become a strong favorite and this is actually the third bottle that i have purchased in a row.  that’s unprecedented!  the smell of this is soooooooo tropical and uplifting and the product itself doesn’t make me feel dry or squeaky the way regular soap does.  i’m not sure about the firming and toning properties – pretty sure only exercise can do that! – but it doesn’t hurt to try.  when i picked up this last bottle there was a buy one get one half off promotion happening at my walgreen’s so i picked up the matching body butter as well.  same amazing smell and it’s really nice and thick, but soaks in immediately.  i put it on after i’ve toweled off but while my skin is still relatively damp and warm.  loving this range!  overall i really like this brand – it’s natural, organic, fair trade, cruelty-free, and sustainably produced.  i have a lip balm from them (mentioned here) and just picked up a shampoo and conditioner set, which i’m sure will be in next month’s picks.

glossier coconut balm dotcom // i loved this over the summer and i’m loving it again.  the scent is incredibly uplifting and it’s just a really nice product.  i like to really pile it up on my lips at night and then in the morning they are totally hydrated and plump.  i prefer this to the original – even though coconut isn’t actually an ingredient i feel like the texture is more coconut-y and more hydrating.

hylamide low-molecular ha serum // i’ve been wanting to get into serums for a while, but didn’t really know where to start.  when the glossier supers arrived, i was so excited and picked up all 3 almost immediately.  i thought it would be a great intro into the serum world, but i was left really disappointed.  i’ve read so many good reviews about the supers, but didn’t see any benefits from any of them.  so after more research, i knew that i really wanted to get a hyaluronic acid serum, and found this one from hylamide.  basically, the hyaluronic acid that is found in our bodies and that is in many skincare items contains molecules that are too large for our skin to absorb.  so the serum or lotion or whatever simply sits on top of our skin, so all the benefits disappear when we wash our faces.  the ha serum from hylamide contains 5 different variations of hyaluronic acid that contain smaller molecules, so our skin is able to absorb these and really get the benefits that that hyaluronic acid provides.  i have definitely seen a moisture difference in my skin after a few weeks of twice daily use, and i look forward to seeing the longer term benefits that this serum promotes.  oh and wait!  i forgot to mention this serum is only $20 and is available at most drugstores.  for a serum, that is a total steal.  deciem, the company that produces hylamide products, is a pretty cool skincare brand that also produces the ordinaries serums, which you might have seen floating around instagram.  those sit at an even lower price point and sound pretty appealing as well.

pacifica nail polish in desert princess // pacifica is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands.  i was on the hunt for a mauvey pink nail polish that wasn’t too grandma-ish and stumbled upon this shade while at whole foods one day.  it’s exactly what i was looking for and shows up nicely on my fair, cool-toned skin.  i like that it feels like a neutral shade, as opposed to a bright pink which honestly i don’t like.  the formula is great and the applicator is even better.  plus that name!  who could resist!

entertainment

selected writings, truman capote // i found this at south congress books in austin and it took me a split second to decide to buy it.  it’s a first edition from 1962 and contains a ton of stories that i haven’t read and don’t have in my collection.  capote is one of my favorite authors and this is something i will cherish all my life.

a gentleman in moscow, amor towles // talk about favorite authors – amor towles is absolute amazing!  i read rules of civility first, and then my mom actually forced me to read a gentleman in moscow.  the dialogue is witty, the characters are robust, the environment is palpable, and the plot is unlike anything on the market these days.  i will say it goes on a little longer than necessary, but overall i highly recommend.

leather bookmark // going along with my book favorites this month has been the gorgeous green leather bookmark my sister got me for my birthday.  i don’t own any other bookmarks and i feel so fancy having such a beautiful one!  it’s great especially for my vintage books in which i don’t want to fold down the pages.  it also serves a beautiful reminder of my amazing trip to austin.  thanks lyssie 🙂

american housewife // my sister introduced me to this show and i have since watched very single episode (basically in one day).  this show couldn’t be funnier or cuter.  it’s a breath of fresh air, so carefree, and so wholesome.  it’s still in the first season so it won’t take you too long to get up to date!  go watch!

etc.

madewell succulent earrings & other dangly earrings // ok i had no idea these were called the succulent earrings until i just looked online to get a link for you all (i bought them in store)!!!  could there be anything more perfect for me?!  my sister bought the blue pair for me probably 6 years ago and i am just now feeling like i can wear something so big daily – it’s pretty fun actually.

paring back // my parents are moving out of my childhood home (don’t even get me started…) and as a result we have been going through every single thing we own before the move.  it’s been fun, sad, and extremely cathartic to go through all of my belongings and get rid of those that don’t benefit me anymore.  clothes, books, paraphernalia from grade school…not to sound like marie kondo (i think the fact that she has made so much money off telling people to get rid of things that don’t make them happy – hello duh – is total lunacy…don’t get me started on that either!), but it feels pretty great to not be weighed down by things that i just don’t want in my life anymore.

the real real pt.1

you know me, i’m a simple girl at heart.  i love makeup, i love cosmetics, but honestly?  i always feel overdone when i actually do my makeup.  when i’m going to work (the only time i put makeup on really), i just want to look fresh faced and pulled together.  so here are the actual products that you can find on rotation.  these are my staples, these are all i use, these are the real real.

part one: the face base.IMG_4392.jpgIMG_4395.jpgprimer: this is a new find!  i can no longer put on makeup without using my too faced hangover primer (i have the mini size).  it gives my dry skin a little more moisture and i really see a difference in the longevity of my makeup.  no more coming home, looking in the mirror, and questioning my existence and how long i actually looked like this

foundation: not that it can really be called that.  on most days, the glossier skin tint in light or medium, season-depending.  if i feel i need a little more coverage (ish), i mix in a little of the nars tinted moisturizer with the skin tint.  this is a winter product for me for the most part, cause it is my winter shade – light 0 terre neuve.

concealer: not pictured cause it is lost in my purse somewhere.  but you know it’s the nars radiant creamy concealer.  my summery/fall shade is creme brulee, but i’m quickly reintroducing vanilla.  the pale face is heeeere (poltergeist voice).

bronzer: either matte – benefit hoola – or radiant – soap&glory solar powder.  even if i’m not wearing anything else, i’m always wearing bronzer.  just a little bit in the right places makes all the difference in my eyes.  the solar powder is my new obsession and i don’t see myself putting it down anytime soon, while the hoola is something i’ve worn for years and years.  i think it was my first bronzer besides the bare minerals warmth which just wasn’t pretty when i put it all over my face in high school.

extras: if there’s blush happening, which there really rarely is, it’s nars impassioned.  this is my dream blush.  just a hint of neutral flush that looks perfect on my pale cheeks.  and if i need a little more glow, it’s the rms living luminizer.  it’s the only product i use for highlighting and i love the extremely natural youthful glow.  bare minerals original foundation in fairly medium is always in my purse (again not pictured as i can’t seem to locate it) for when i’m a little too shiny and need some toning down, or just a little bit more coverage.

stay tuned for part 2 coming soon!

october picks

well that’s a little crazy to type out.  i have to say, i’m loving fall though.  i definitely miss summer when it fades away, but i’m almost always ready for cooler days, cozy clothes, and all the beauty of the fresh start of fall.

this list almost feels unnecessary, because the real favorite of october and november was/is my trip to london with my dad.  having just arrived back in the states, i can honestly say this was the most wonderful trip and week of my life.  a few months ago, when my dad informed me he was planning a trip to london to visit the morgan car factory in malvern link, i was somehow able to convince him to let me tag along.  my dad is a pretty guarded man when it comes to his past and his thoughts, and i am honored by all the conversation and lessons we learned from each other this week.  i feel that i was able to share more of myself with him than i have before, mainly that i am really confused and a bit lost when it comes to where i am right now in my life and was honestly able to express this to him, and he shared with me stories that i had never heard before and the confidence he has in me that he has never really expressed.  honestly my dad is the most intelligent, gentle, caring, thoughtful man and i have loved spending one-on-one time with him this week.  thank you dad, for all the wisdom, love, and memories that i have collected over this week, and my entire life.

i hope that october was kind and gentle to all of you, and that you are looking forward to november and the end of 2016.  this time of year is always a little bit scary (the end of one year and the beginning of another), but also wonderful and refreshing at the same time.  cheers to november and to making it all that we want it to be!
IMG_4351.jpgold faithfuls //

bare minerals original foundation in fairly medium – i go in and out with this powder foundation and we are fully back together right now.  it’s just such a beautiful, light weight powder that offers a hint of coverage and mattifying benefits, while still allowing your skin and oils and radiance show through.  i also have the pressed version for on the go.

nars radiant creamy concealer in creme brulee – my all-time favorite concealer in a brand new shade.  i wear vanilla when i’m at my most pale, but right now creme brulee is absolutely perfect.  so happy they released so many new shades!

physician’s formula butter bronzer in bronzer – i stopped using this during the summer because i had a tan and it was not dark enough to show up, but with my skin becoming pale again i’m reaching for it more and more.  it’s such a beautiful natural bronzer with a hint of sheen for a touch of life.  it’s a lot lighter than, say, nars laguna which is another favorite, but that is so easy to overdo.  this is nice and subtle.

nuxe reve de miel – every winter i come back to this baby.  it’s the absolute best.  i really layer it on at night and let it soak in, and then put on just the littlest bit during the day.  it’s matte, so it smooths out your lips just a little bit.  it has some small granuals so it works as both a very gentle scrub and an intense moisturizer – almost masking the lips.

dangly earrings – i really go in and out with earrings.  i always have really dainty, small hoops in my various piercings, with a small stud or nothing in my regular earlobe piercings.  but lately i’ve really been enjoying my collection of bigger earrings and the effect they have on an outfit.  i hate feeling too put together, which is usually how earrings make me feel, but right now i’m feeling a little bit more me with them on.

the lost art of keeping secrets by eva rice – my second all time favorite book.  ALL TIME.  i read it once every couple months, but with my upcoming trip to london it seemed like the perfect time for a refresh. this is a british book (i’m not sure if it was released in the states) so just a quick overview: penelope’s life is completely changed when she goes to tea with charlotte, soon to be her best friend and partner-in-crime.  the book is about the adventures and calamities that ensure.  it’s perfectly british and somehow totally modern even though it takes place in the 50s (which is so delicious!).  i can’t wait to get to london and have my favorite friends in mind throughout my days.  on my first trip to london when i was 14, i picked this book out in the airport for my sister, but she never read it and i quickly stole it.  i’m so glad i did!

jane austen – i am a huge, HUGE, jane austen fan.  i have read almost all of her major works, and love finding new short stories and unknown works that i haven’t read before.  as i was on my way to london at the end of october, i had to bring her along.  i brought the watson’s with me, which was a newer find and thus unread, and picked up the beautiful cassandra and lady susan while on a day trip to oxford (i couldn’t contain my excitement when i found these “penguin little black classics” priced between 1-3 pounds!  what a bargain!!).  i think jane has the reputation to be really hard to read and get through, but i find her language easy to understand and get sucked in to.  i recommend starting with northanger abbey if you haven’t read any jane austen before; it’s my favorite and the one that i started with!  i think it shows the range of her talents and makes you want to read more.  let me know what you think!

new favorites //

puma classic suede sneakers these are the. most. comfortable. sneakers.  i got these a couple weeks ago, and then brought them to new york with me last week.  for some reason i always think it’s a good idea to break in new shoes when i go to new york and am walking around nonstop.  however, this time it was!  these are incredibly comfortable and have a cushion for the back heels where blisters are pretty much inevitable.  i have had no blisters, no soreness, no break in time whatsoever.  plus they’re fucking cool if you ask me.  i much prefer them to the adidas campus’ which are what i really wanted over the summer.  i’m a true 8 but wear a 7.5 in supergas and converse, but i went with an 8 in these and they are perfect.

mac strobe cream – i got this as a little sample with a nordstrom purchase in the summer, and forgot about it really until this past month.  i haven’t gone a day without it!  i use a very very little amount all over the face before i put on my concealer and bare minerals, and it gives me the most beautiful glow.  not shimmering or pigmented, just a glow from within.  i am definitely going to purchase the travel size when this little guy runs out (though i don’t think that will be any time soon)!  except the smell is truly disgusting to me for the first few minutes until it dissipates!

j.crew lookout high rise cords – i’m always on the hunt for a good pair of high-waisted corduroy pants.  surprisingly, cords of the high waisted variety are rather hard to find, and can usually run really tight and small.  on a whim i ordered 2 pairs of these from j.crew (fatigue green and black) as they were having a 30% off fall items sale, and they are perfect.  seriously perfect.  i am a 26 or 27 in jeans, and went with a 27 in these.  i probably could have used the smaller size, but i like that the 27 is not super skin tight and i have extra room in the waist.  plus the price point is pretty impressive for j.crew, in my opinion.

ouai wave spray – i decided to stray away from my collection of salt sprays to try out the wave spray from jen atkin’s relatively new haircare line.  i got the travel size from sephora, and i wish i had just gotten the full size!  i absolutely love this and have used it almost every day since purchasing (almost every day i’ve washed my hair that is).  basically it does what a salt spray does, but without the crunch and without the actually drying out of the hair that sea salt causes.  i brought it with me on my trip and it actually undid the ill effects of hotel shampoo/conditioner/weird water.  is there a bigger feat in the world?  yes, but hotel hair is high up on the list.  i will definitely pick up the full size when i finish this guy.

learning lessons from the girls

vsco-photo-1.jpgi wish i could put into words how incredible this book is and how intensely it resonated with me.  though i finished it weeks ago, it is still on my mind.  spoiler alerts here!

isn’t it amazing that there could be anything appealing about the ranch?  but maybe it’s exactly what evie describes – the indiscriminate love that they all feel for each other, the easy way they hold hands and fall into step with each other.  it’s what i love about my own friends.  the easy affection we feel, the ability to show it.  a place of friendship that feels like family.

i have always been intrigued by cults, and most specifically, the manson family.  intrigued in that eery way you can’t look away from a car crash or a scary movie.  you want to, but you can’t.  isn’t there something compelling about these groups of people that so intensely belong to one cause, to each other?  of course i’m glorifying it, which i don’t want to.  but i guess what is interesting to me are the groups before the catastrophe.  in this case, the summer before the murders.

i have to be honest that so much of the ranch is familiar to me.  it is comfortable.  it is in many ways what i experience at the places my friends live.  messy, sandy, dingy, but cozy and loving and familiar.  no one has anyone but each other, and with each other they have it all.

i relate to evie.  the way she belongs to the group, yet has that background – the kushy life, the (at one time) warm memories, the purse always open.  she condemns this, as i once did.  she sees her existence as weak, compared to the struggles and intense freedoms of the group.  i am attracted to people that lead very different lives than myself.  who’s home life has not been as wonderful and safe as my own.  who truly can do whatever they want.  as i’ve gotten older, i am able to unite these two sides of myself.  i no longer condemn myself for leading a very charmed life.

i know where i come from, i know what i want, and i am molded by the people i surround myself with, both my family and my friends.  it is okay to unite these very separate but equal (in importance and lessons) parts of my life.  my upbringing is what gives my strength, my confidence, my depth.  i certainly wished at one point that i was more like my friends, that i could leave my family for months on end and follow my wanderlust, surviving on nothing and making memories along the way.  i am figuring out how to be both people.  the girl who is devoted to her family, taking care of them and giving her whole self to them.  but also the girl that longs for more.  my time for exploration will come.  it will find me.
