current lovelies

bb current lovelies 1.jpgbb current lovelies 2.jpgmy thich nhat hanh books // i am just a bundle of anxiety these days, resulting from months of living at home with my parents (love them and they are my best friends but oooooooh myyyyyyy), going back to school soon (my stomach just did a somersault), and moving into my own apartment!  don’t get me wrong, everything is good, but little old me is definitely prone to anxiety.  my thich nhat hanh books, the miracle of mindfulness and making space, are helping me focus and come back down to earth.  actually reading in general is helping me accomplish this, i can’t stop at the moment!  my dad and i were having a really nice conversation yesterday morning about being clean and living in a positive environment and i brought up a buddhist concept and he looked at me and was like oh heavens.  oh dear dad, i’m sorry your wife and children are all bohemian-inclined!!

loose jeans // be it spring time or laziness, but skinny jeans are just not my steez these days.  i’m living in my comfy denim and i cannot say i’m sorry about it.  my favorites are my 501s (fitted through hips and booty, then straight down) and citizens of humanity liya distressed jeans (boyfriend fit, not sure what exact color i have as i got them randomly on sale), and loft straight crops. plus paired with a fitted long sleeve tee, i feel pretty sexy if i do say so myself.

chain bracelets // i haven’t been much of a jewelry wearer lately, but the other day i threw on some of my dainty chain bracelets and they have been living on my wrist every since.  the arrow one is from madewell a while ago and the little horseshoe i got at a street market in new york.

newish blog reads // anyone else always on the hunt for interesting blogs?  yeah, me too!  some new-to-me favorites i’ve added to my bookmarks include troves and roses and thirteen thoughts.  i’m also back in love with some old favorites, including the anna edit and beauty by kelsey.  i don’t only read beauty blogs, but i’m pretty loyal to my fashion and lifestyle favorites – i don’t stray as often.

spring! // now i am not going to complain because chicago’s winter this year was easy as pie.  i never consider myself much of spring person, i’m usually like let’s just get on to summer please, but with the occassional 60-70 degree days we’ve been getting, baby animals floating about, and trees full of buds and blooms, i am happy as a clam.  of course it’s raining and 40 while i’m writing this, but i’m living for those quick days of bliss that have been popping up more and more frequently.  actually, after surviving that winter from hell that we had in boston a few years ago, springtime is especially sacred to me.  before that winter i never cared about flowers, but now i can’t get enough.  after experiencing that much misery, i am all about the rebirth we get in the spring.  also, happy belated Easter to those that celebrated!

harry styles for rolling stone // ok i don’t know what it is about harry styles but i am seriously in love with him.  oh dear, please don’t leave my blog yet!  i am not one to have celebrity crushes or really keep up with new music, but ever since i went to that one direction concert for my summer internship years ago (yeah i know, how cool is that?!) i have been seriously in love with that kid.  his recent interview with rolling stone was, in a word, refreshing.  i can honestly say that he has a beautiful mind and i was very impressed reading that article and listening to his new music.  i urge you to read, but if you fall in love, i’ve got dibs.

tell me, what’s been keeping you sane lately?

british beauty

IMG_4346.jpgthanks to all my favorite british beauty bloggers and vloggers, including but not limited to anna of the anna edit (formerly vivianna does makeup), estee lalonde, amelia liana, and suzie of hello october, i have had a lengthy british cosmetics wish list for quite some time (read: years).  so when i was finally able to high-tail it to boots (thanks to my dad for understanding that he should leave alone for this event), i can ecstatically say that i found everything on my list.  and almost peed my pants with excitement every time i wandered into a new aisle.  so here’s what i got my little paws on…
IMG_4348 (1).jpgmaybelline color tattoo in creme de rose – credit to suzie on this one.  we can get these cream shadows in the states, but not in this color and i have had my eyes on this mac painterly dupe for quite some time.

maybelline color stay 7-day nail polish – credit to amelia.  she has spoken on these polishes many a time, and usually has them on, so i have wanted to grab a couple shades for probably a year now.  upon arriving home i immediately put on ___ and the application was excellent.  i’ll let you know about that whole 7-day thing.

l’oreal d’huile nail polish – credit again goes to amelia.  that girl knows her nail polish!

barry m nail polish – specifically the shade eat my dust.  credit to anna on this one.  she loves a good pastel light blue polish, so i definitely trust her opinion, and when she wore this one for the whole of summer 2015, it went on the list as well.  *also i am so glad i had plenty of room in my liquids bag for all these nail polish bottles!!

bourjois 123 cc cream – credit goes to estee for this guy.  a pale skin friend, estee loves a light, luminious base and has mentioned the bourjois foundations, and this product specifically for years.  i got the lightest shade, which has a nice neutral undertone.  i was pleased that it didn’t appear to much on the yellow side.  i have only tested a little of this, but it beautifully evens out my skin tone without being cakey or drying or too heavy.

soap and glory solar powder bronzer – this is the originally item that went on my wishlist, thanks to anna and lily pebbles.  i even got a back up of this because i was that excited.  this is a beautiful, light bronzer that has a light sheen and shimmer to it.  it appears to be similar to the physician’s formula butter bronzer, but obviously better because it has all that british hype!  we can get soap & glory in the states, including some of their powder products, but not this specific item.

l’oreal eye shadow – specifically shade 201.  big thanks to amelia, again.  we have these in the states now, but i think the shade range is different and honestly i wanted to get the original just because.  these are kind of like a pressed pigment but not as hard to work with, and just all around a really beautiful sheeny shadow.

maybelline color drama lip pencil – shade nude perfection.  for the little time that i was avidly following stephanie of cocochic, i knew that i had to have this.  it’s a matte lip pencil similar to the nars velvet mattes, and this is a really nice peachy sort of nude.

collection concealer – ok i can’t even credit this to one specific person.  maybe barbara of the persian babe in particular?  this is like the concealer of the uk, and obviously i had to have it.  i got the shade fair, and while this does oxodize a bit, i think it is going to be a firm favorite.  i’ll let you know! (not pictured because i’ve put this away until i finish my current concealer)

sleek face palette – i think it’s back to amelia on this one.  i got the bronzer, highlighter, and blush palette.  the bronzer reminds me of benefit’s hoola and the blush of nars orgasm.  plus its so sleek, if you’ll excuse the pun!!

ok that finishes up this ridiculously long list!  i needed absolutely 0% of these products, but after wanting them for so long, i couldn’t convince myself to not buy any of these.  british drugstores, boot’s in particular, just seem so cool and well done, and the products truly are amazing.  cvs, walgreen’s, and duane reade actually seem like crap in comparison, but i’m sure it’s just cause that’s what i know and go to.  yayyyyy!

back from the big city

i just back from a few days in new york and it was yet another whirlwind weekend.  it seems like i’m never in new york for a long enough time, but i guess that’s what happens when life and jobs are in the mix. needless to say i did some shopping while i was there…here’s what i picked up:

beauty

topshop nail polish in blue rinse, boy next door, and parma violet – these choices were definitely influenced by my favorite british beauty bloggers, including vivianna does makeup, essie button, and lily pebbles.  i’ve had a list of british beauty products that i wanted to check out for a while because of these ladies, so i was super excited when i happened to walk by a topshop while wandering around the city (topshop beauty products are hard to find in the us).  you can bet i went straight to their beauty department.  check out these posts to understand why i purchased these colors: 1, 2, 3, 4.

i currently have blue rinse on my nails and i have to say i’m really impressed.  i was worried because the first coat went on streaky, but the second coat made everything perfect.  these are really nice polishes and from the reviews i’ve read they last a pretty long time.  the color is gorgeous – it’s kind of in between essie bikini so teeny and lapiz of luxury.  loving it!

topshop lip ombre in baffle – the trick here is to use both of the shades to create an ombre lip look.  that’s not really my style, but i really like these shades, the formula, and the application.  and it’s so handy to have two lip colors in one little pot!  vivianna does makeup reviews the lip ombre here.

topshop lip and cheek smudge in wilderness – this shade is similar to my favorite nars matte lip pencil in damned.  the smudging brush on the other end of the color is perfect, especially because i like my lips to look stained and worn in when i’m wearing a bold color – sort of like you were just making out with someone ;).

maybelline lash sensational mascara in very black – i’ve had my eye on this mascara after reading that it’s a great dupe for the benefit roller lash.  it’s not my favorite mascara ever but i do like it.  i think it definitely opens my eyes and makes my lashes look more curled as is advertised.  it’s a little bit clumpy, but i like the brush and the length it provides.

clothing

madewell high riser skinny skinny jean in dusty wash – i was very excited to pick up these jeans after drooling over them online. the madewell high riser jeans are one of my favorite jean styles – my sister and i probably have every pair in the collection between the two of us. they are just the perfect fit – high rise, flattering, comfortable, perfect length, and actually feel like jeans, not leggings. i love grey jeans in the fall and winter because they add a little extra element to an outfit, and look great with black or plaid.

madewell ryder cardigan in heather fog – i’m always on the hunt for the perfect oversized, long cardigan. this one is exactly what i was looking for. it looks great over tee shirts and plaid shirts and sweaters alike, is perfectly slouchy and baggy, and hits at a nice place on the thigh. it’s also crazy soft and i know i’m going to throw this over everything, including pajamas. i’m probably (read: definitely) going to get another color.
