everyday products // skincare and makeup

i have fallen into a delightfully easy skincare and makeup routine.  my goal is to always look the same (aka like i’m not wearing any makeup), but change up the products when i need or want to.  so for the past few months, this has been my routine, every single day.  the products at the bottom are the ones that i add in when necessary, like face masks or lipstick.  bb daily skincare.jpgmorning skincare routine //

  1. wash face with water
  2. spray face with heritage store rosewater and glycerin spray and press into skin
  3. apply acure radically rejuvenating eye cream
  4. apply a mix of jordan samuel hydrate serum and either youth to the people hydrate + glow oil or indie lee squalane oil (3-4 drops max)
  5. apply a mix of avene hydrance optimale moisturizer with spf 25 and a small dollop of nars hot sand illuminator

  3. apply mac studio fix 24 hour concealer in nw20, let sit for 30 seconds or so before stippling in with my fingers

  5. curl lashes (always) and apply glossier lash slick mascara (sometimes)
  6. wipe all stray product out of brows and apply glossier boy brow in brown (this only works for me when it is pretty much dried out and not as gloopy or product-heavy)
  7. heritage store rosewater and glycerin spray

glowy skin: cause summer ain’t over just yet

glowy summer skin.jpgprep // after doing your morning skincare, which these days involves a few drops of hyaluronic acid mixed with one drop of various face oils for me, apply your sunscreen.  give it a few minutes to soak in and go back in with a spritz of hydrating toner like the evan healy lavender hydrosoul (shocker) and an illuminating primer that will give you both hydration and radiance.  i chose the tata harper illuminating moisturizer, but anything with a touch of radiance will do.

base // follow with a sheer and glowing base, like the l’oreal lumi cushion foundation.  this is not really a “foundation” in my opinion, but is a step up from something like the glossier perfecting skin tint.  it evens out the skin tone while letting the natural skin show through and gives the complexion a beautiful glow.  add concealer where needed, opting for something equally hydrating, like the sephora bright future gel serum concealer.  this is my favorite for summer because of the exceptional shade range and price point, AND they finally changed the dumb applicator!  it now has a really nice slanted doe foot.  a cream blush and highlighter, like the rms lip2cheek in vogue rose and living luminizer, on the cheeks and cheekbones respectively will add to the glow and overall health of the look.  i usually use peachier blushes because they are natural and subtle looking, but whatever works for you!  this limited edition rms shade (i highly recommend grabbing it before it’s gone) gives the perfect sunkissed effect.

eyes & lips // this look is really more about the complexion, so opt for something simple on the eyes and lips.  i usually slap on a little elizabeth arden 8 hour cream on the lips and use whatever is left on my finger to pat onto the eye lids.  follow with a light layer of black mascara, mostly on the roots of the lashes, for some oomph and maybe another spritz of hydrating mist.

dope taupe

bb the taupes1.jpgthere’s just something about a taupe eye shadow, you know?  it’s such a beautifully subtle, natural color, giving any eye color a nice little pop.  it’s suitable for every day use as well as a heavier makeup look, while being grungy enough to not look overdone.  for me, my taupes are old reliables.

sephora shadow and liner in 04 taupe // the creamiest (obviously) and most pigmented of the bunch.  taupe is really the perfect cool-toned taupe, with flashes of lavender or silver depending on the light.  it’s described as a shimmer but i would say it’s more on the metallic end.  it reminds me somewhat of laura mercier amethyst but still a true taupe.  i highly recommend checking out these shadow sticks, they are the best on the market in my opinion.

rms beauty eye polish in myth // my other favorite cream taupe.  i’ve mentioned this shadow a million and one times, but it’s just that good.  it’s a sheer wash of glowy goodness; a cool-toned taupe with hint of minkiness.  i would say this can be hit or miss product depending on your shadow/lasting power/creasing preferences, but i love the messy, sheeny look it imparts.

colourpop super shock shadow in mixed tape // this is a new purchase but i’ve already worn it 3 times so that’s really saying something.  this is like the cream to powder, more pigmented version of myth.  it has those purple cool tones, but this time with subtle silver shimmers.  it looks extra cool on me, definitely on the silver side, which i love.  if you haven’t tried these shadows – and it took me forever to – they are just the coolest things.  they are a marshmallow consistency that’s impossible to describe, but they are a cream/powder crossover.  gorgeous.

l’oreal colour riche shadow in 201 // this is another very sheer and shimmery formula.  it’s a lot sheerer than i expected or would like it to be, but it’s beautiful either way.  sitting next to mixed tape you can really see the silver tones, so i would say this doesn’t contain as much purple as the others.  the shimmers are more noticeable than any of the other shadows i’ve mentioned, but still not in an obvious or tacky way.  i don’t know if i would repurchase this shadow just because of the lack of pigmentation, but i’m enjoying it in the mean time (i purchased this in london but the us shade pain au chocolat is identical).

gabriel cosmetics eyeshadow in sable // the only matte taupe i have, but the only one i need.  i absolutely adore this eye shadow, it’s the right amount of browny purpley pink without making me look sick or weird.  this is a really nice staple shadow that’s easy to wear and blend, but is a slight departure from a regular brown.  this also looks great when blended with the powdered shadows mentioned above.

sephora contour eye pencil in 15 flirting game // this is an honorable mention as it’s a liner and not a shadow.  this is a darker taupe than the sephora shadow stick, but still a true taupe and not a brown.  it has fine silver shimmers that i don’t find noticeable when i have it actually lining my eyes.  i’m really not an eyeliner person, but sometimes i want that definition, so i love this color to give me the eyeliner look without being nearly as harsh as black or brown.  i don’t reach for this often, but i think this is a product to check out – creamy, blendable, and long lasting.bb the taupes2.jpgbb the taupes3.jpg

december picks //

picture my dad singing “these are a few of my favorite things…” in the background, as he was doing while i was taking my photos  😉IMG_0090.jpg
shu uemera eyelash curlers
ok i finally caved and jumped on the bandwagon, and man i am never turning back.  i thought my tarte curlers were good, but now i’m realizing that they didn’t curl that much and they definitely pinched.  these make my eyelashes look not only curled but voluminous, and they stay curled all day, with mascara or without (and i use regular mascara, not waterproof).  it’s no surprise these are the best of the best.

sarah chloe monogram necklace something i’ve had for a long time but am really loving this month.  i love the length and the chunkier pendant – it’s a little bit different from my usual dainty chains.

real techniques complexion sponge i had a beauty blender for a while, but when it got a little too grubby, i decided to pick up this less expensive version instead of another $20 splurge.  and it’s amazing!!  in my opinion it’s way better than the original, as it has more points and flat edges for tough to reach areas (nose, under eyes).

go-to face hero i have been reading about this for months on the file and have done some pretty thorough research on its benefits.  i finished my mario badescu rose hips oil, but in the end i didn’t feel that it was hydrating or oily enough (which i know is actually one of its main selling points) especially with winter in full swing.  i was going to get the pai rosehip bioregenerate oil, but i decided to get the go-to instead as it has such rave reviews.  it includes so many wonderful oils, including rosehip, almond, jojoba, and many many more.  once converted from australian to american dollars, the price point is great (roughly $34 american plus $18 shipping) and the international shipping was really fast.  i am so glad i decided to get this, it has done wonders for my skin and i noticed the effects over night, no exaggeration.

l’oreal brow stylist plumper in medium to dark – i originally typed that as “brow plumber.”  anyways!  i have pretty ok brows, and truth be told i can’t be bothered to do anything over the top with them.  but they do get pretty unruly and messy throughout the day so i have been looking for a really subtle brow gel to keep them in place but not look “done.”  the glossier boy brow is ok, but it’s so thick and pomade-y that it was just too much for low-key me.  i heard about the l’oreal brow gel somewhere, so i picked it up when i saw it at duane reade and i love it!  it’s exactly what i was looking for.  it is tinted, so it offers a little bit of color while looking totally natural and not too gel-y.  i wipe most of the product off before applying, so that helps, but really this is a great product and doesn’t make me feel like my eyebrows are cemented to my face.

nars radiant tinted moisturizer in terre neuve – this has been my go-to base this month.  for one thing, it’s my perfect winter shade, and the coverage is perfect.  it evens out the redness that i have going on and doesn’t cling to my dry patches, but looks totally natural and nonexistent.  i don’t typically wear a “base” every day, but i have felt it necessary this month and have been happy to have this guy around.  if you’re looking for a good tinted moisturizer, i highly recommend the nars one.  though i can’t seem to find a good summer shade, this one matches my pale, pink winter skin like a dream.

bioderma sensibio this is a repeat from november, but i feel the need to mention it again!  i got a small bottle of this while in london in november and have used up the whole thing in the past 2 months!  it has been really nice to have an actual makeup remover for my whole face, and i love using this as a first step before my cleanser.  it gets rid of my mascara (not waterproof) in just a few swipes and gets rid of the leftover bronzer, tinted moisturizer, and layers of grime that have made home of my face during the day.  also, it’s now available a couple places online like beautylish and violet grey, so it’s finally available to us americans!

violette_fr – i have seen violette featured a ton on violet grey, but i had no idea that she had a youtube channel!  violette is an amazing parisian makeup artist, and her channel shows you how to achieve that perfectly french look.  i love how short and simple her videos are, and how she focuses on one feature, be it eyes, lips, etc.  her looks are simple and beautiful and i am addicted!

a christmas carol by charles dickens for whatever reason, i really wanted to read this dickens classic this month.  i was in search of a cozy read – whatever that means – and this fit the bill perfectly.  though i know the story by heart, i have never read it first hand.  it is such a beautiful and timeless story, and even if you think you know it all i recommend taking the time to read it.  it’s quite short – i finished it in a day or two – but i thoroughly enjoyed it and was reminded of it’s great lessons on life, appreciation, and kindness.

drawing/sketching – i’ve always been a doodling, but this month i enjoyed my drawings a little bit more than usual.  i drew winter guides for my sisters’ christmas presents, and i loved drawing the products and items that i love in my real life and want them to love too.  you know what’s better than a new glossier product?  drawing a really cute picture of one!IMG_0085.jpgIMG_0089.jpg

british beauty

IMG_4346.jpgthanks to all my favorite british beauty bloggers and vloggers, including but not limited to anna of the anna edit (formerly vivianna does makeup), estee lalonde, amelia liana, and suzie of hello october, i have had a lengthy british cosmetics wish list for quite some time (read: years).  so when i was finally able to high-tail it to boots (thanks to my dad for understanding that he should leave alone for this event), i can ecstatically say that i found everything on my list.  and almost peed my pants with excitement every time i wandered into a new aisle.  so here’s what i got my little paws on…
IMG_4348 (1).jpgmaybelline color tattoo in creme de rose – credit to suzie on this one.  we can get these cream shadows in the states, but not in this color and i have had my eyes on this mac painterly dupe for quite some time.

maybelline color stay 7-day nail polish – credit to amelia.  she has spoken on these polishes many a time, and usually has them on, so i have wanted to grab a couple shades for probably a year now.  upon arriving home i immediately put on ___ and the application was excellent.  i’ll let you know about that whole 7-day thing.

l’oreal d’huile nail polish – credit again goes to amelia.  that girl knows her nail polish!

barry m nail polish – specifically the shade eat my dust.  credit to anna on this one.  she loves a good pastel light blue polish, so i definitely trust her opinion, and when she wore this one for the whole of summer 2015, it went on the list as well.  *also i am so glad i had plenty of room in my liquids bag for all these nail polish bottles!!

bourjois 123 cc cream – credit goes to estee for this guy.  a pale skin friend, estee loves a light, luminious base and has mentioned the bourjois foundations, and this product specifically for years.  i got the lightest shade, which has a nice neutral undertone.  i was pleased that it didn’t appear to much on the yellow side.  i have only tested a little of this, but it beautifully evens out my skin tone without being cakey or drying or too heavy.

soap and glory solar powder bronzer – this is the originally item that went on my wishlist, thanks to anna and lily pebbles.  i even got a back up of this because i was that excited.  this is a beautiful, light bronzer that has a light sheen and shimmer to it.  it appears to be similar to the physician’s formula butter bronzer, but obviously better because it has all that british hype!  we can get soap & glory in the states, including some of their powder products, but not this specific item.

l’oreal eye shadow – specifically shade 201.  big thanks to amelia, again.  we have these in the states now, but i think the shade range is different and honestly i wanted to get the original just because.  these are kind of like a pressed pigment but not as hard to work with, and just all around a really beautiful sheeny shadow.

maybelline color drama lip pencil – shade nude perfection.  for the little time that i was avidly following stephanie of cocochic, i knew that i had to have this.  it’s a matte lip pencil similar to the nars velvet mattes, and this is a really nice peachy sort of nude.

collection concealer – ok i can’t even credit this to one specific person.  maybe barbara of the persian babe in particular?  this is like the concealer of the uk, and obviously i had to have it.  i got the shade fair, and while this does oxodize a bit, i think it is going to be a firm favorite.  i’ll let you know! (not pictured because i’ve put this away until i finish my current concealer)

sleek face palette – i think it’s back to amelia on this one.  i got the bronzer, highlighter, and blush palette.  the bronzer reminds me of benefit’s hoola and the blush of nars orgasm.  plus its so sleek, if you’ll excuse the pun!!

ok that finishes up this ridiculously long list!  i needed absolutely 0% of these products, but after wanting them for so long, i couldn’t convince myself to not buy any of these.  british drugstores, boot’s in particular, just seem so cool and well done, and the products truly are amazing.  cvs, walgreen’s, and duane reade actually seem like crap in comparison, but i’m sure it’s just cause that’s what i know and go to.  yayyyyy!

makeup for a minimalist: drugstore favorites

IMG_2960maybelline fit me concealer: i have the shade 15 fair and it is pretty spot on similar with nars radiant creamy concealer in vanilla.  i love this concealer as more summery option to the heavier, drier nars concealer.  it’s very similar in coverage but the formula is creamier and more liquid-y.  it is helpful to set this though, which i don’t have to do with the nars.

revlon matte balm: i have the color sultry and i am dying to get more of these.  this is a beautiful dusty rose neutral shade with the perfect hint of brown.  these are super creamy but with a matte finish and not drying at all.  they don’t have a ton of color options but it is a nice range that isn’t too boring.

l’oreal color riche nail polish: in after hours and tangerine crush.  i love these polishes!  the brush is wide and curved at the bottom so it fits the nail perfectly.  the formula’s are amazing and they have some great color options.  i only have these two shades but am definitely looking to add more to my stash.

nyx butter gloss: i have the shades creme brulee eclair (both pictured here).  these glosses are nicely pigmented and super smooth and buttery (oohhh shocker).  i love the small packaging and the scent of these glosses.  plus they aren’t sticky glossy.  that’s always a good thing.

nyx mega shine lip gloss: i have the shades beige and some other one that the name wore off of (not pictured) – it’s a light peachy pink.  these glosses are probably less pigmented than the butter glosses, but to me they are all basically the same.  if i’m going to wear gloss, you bet it’s a nyx gloss.

no7 stay perfect shade and define cream shadow sticks: pictured here in cool mink, but i also own coffee bean (warm brown), velvet truffle (a cool toned brown), and deep purple (a shimmering navy).  i use the darker shades for smudgy eyeliner looks and cool mink all over the lid. these are great dupes for the laura mercier caviar shadow sticks which are the only other cream eyeshadow sticks i’ve used, but i heard they are also a good dupe for the by terry ombre blackstars.

l’oreal telescopic mascara:  i’m terrible at saying whether things are dupes or not, but i think this is a pretty good dupe for my beloved bare minerals flawless definition mascara.  it creates great definition but very naturally, which is just how i like my lashes to be look.  if you like natural lashes but a little bit enhanced, i would definitely check this mascara out.  just make sure you wipe off some of the product on the bristles – sometimes i find you can get too much and that’s never a good look.
