buyer’s remorse

sometimes thing’s just don’t work out. ¬†in honor of that, i’m sharing some products that just aren’t working for me and that i’m truly sad i spent my dollars on. ¬†interestingly enough, these are all products that took a lot of deliberation to actually buy – so not impulse buys in the least. ¬†bb buyer's remorse1.jpgmarc jacobs coconut primer // i was soooo excited to buy this. ¬†i had gone through 2 samples from sephora, but for some reason since i bought it i’ve had no interest in it. i’m not particularly worried about how long my makeup lasts since i wear such a minimal amount, so maybe that’s why i’m not overly fussed about wearing a primer. ¬†plus my skin is pretty balanced in the spring and summer so i don’t need that extra boost of hydration. ¬†and to be quite honest, i think i prefer the too faced hangover primer that this is comparable to. ¬†whatever the case, i wish i didn’t buy this uber expensive product! ¬†it’s beautiful but…nah.

gressa lip boost in bare // uuuhghghghghgh. ¬†i’m so upset with this product. ¬†i read reviews that the gressa lip boosts are drying but no one said that they are DRY. ¬†like, can barely get this on my finger dry. ¬†the color is gorgeous but i can only get this on if i leave it in my car in the sun for a while, and that just isn’t good. ¬†i’ve tried it over balm and with a brush and all that and it’s just absurdly, weirdly dry. ¬†after looking back at pictures, it looks like for other people this is a softer, almost creamy formula. ¬†what?! ¬†psh.

mac blush in dame // ok similarly to the gressa lip boost, this mac blush is just super weird. ¬†every time i go to use it it has somehow sealed up, so i always have to scrape the top off. ¬†it’s a great blush and color when i can get it to work, but it really is a pain. ¬†again, nah.

nars multiple in hot sand // ANOTHER product that seals up. ¬†why is that? ¬†this just doesn’t impart and color on my skin whatsoever. ¬†some shimmer but that’s it. ¬†and i’ve applied it straight to my skin, with my fingers, etc. ¬†i even cut the top of it off to reveal the product below, which worked for one use and then it sealed again. ¬†since i did that i haven’t applied it straight to my skin, so i can’t imagine why this is not functioning properly. ¬†it’s such a gorgeous product and color and i’m so so sad that it’s a dud.

mac lipstick in creme d’nude // i mentioned a while ago that i got trapped into buying some mac products, and this is the other product i bought that day. ¬†i’ve been looking for a sheer lipstick to somewhat lighten my lips (kind of the way the korres lip butter in jasmine does but in more out-for-the-day-friendly packaging). ¬†i liked this in the mac store, but now when i apply it it just makes my lips look so dry and textured. ¬†it’s not actually the color that bothers me – i just pat on a little – but it makes my lips look gross no matter the prep beforehand. ¬†ugh mac. ¬†why.

tell me, what products give you buyer’s remorse? ¬†don’t leave me alone here…

june picks

bb june picks1.jpgproducts //

auric blends desert night perfume oil after visiting the farmer’s market one saturday i was in my local co-op browsing the essential oil section. ¬†i picked up this perfume oil and took a sniff when an older man asked me what i was checking out. ¬†i shared this beautiful scent with him and we got to talking. ¬†he told me about his work as an aromatherapist as well as some stories from his life, and i told him a little bit about me. ¬†it was a beautiful exchange, he gave me some wisdom that i will cherish forever, and i hope i made his day a little brighter as well. ¬†after he left me i knew i had to get this beautiful perfume oil, to remind me of him, of meeting new friends, and of sharing love and light with as many people as we can on this earth.

monk oil #2 recently renamed “dawn.” ¬†i mentioned this beautiful body oil here, but i had to mention it again. ¬†i have been mixing a little in with my body moisturizer – i’m currently using the alba organica ultra emollient and it’s a new staple for me for sure – soaks in quickly and makes my body softer than ever. ¬†i get the benefits of both products in one and the added benefit of not using this oil up to quickly as it is quite pricey. ¬†the scent is calming and brings me back to center.

primal pit paste i used up my meow meow tweet baking soda-free deodorant and picked this up at the grocery store to replace it. ¬†i think i like this better, probably because of the baking soda which thankfully doesn’t seem to irritate my skin. ¬†nice deodorant, probably not groundbreaking but i like it a lot. ¬†it is easier to rub in than the mmt and doesn’t ball up as some deodorants seem to. ¬†i am still layering it with the ursa major one for extra sweaty days (which are plentiful here in indiana).

mac patentpolish lip pencil in revved up i will admit that i got suckered into buying this, but i am so glad that i did! ¬†i’ve been liking how peaches look on me – usually i’m a light pink lip girl – and the formula is very similar to the clinique intense chubby sticks. ¬†it has the right amount of gloss and sheer color to look simple and not overdone, but it makes me feel a little more put together than usual.

first aid beauty ultra repair intensive lip balm my love affair with fab continues! ¬†i picked this up because i read it is similar to the nuxe reve de miel, a previous favorite that doesn’t have the ingredient list i like to see, and they are pretty much identical. ¬†this has that same somewhat gritty texture that exfoliates and moisturizes the lips at the same time. ¬†it is slightly more solid than the nuxe, but the results are spot on. ¬†it lasts all night and i can still feel it in the morning, which tells me it is really doing it’s job. ¬†if you are looking for a heavy-duty lip product, i recommend checking this out.

garnier micellar water and thayer’s alcohol-free rose witch hazel i have a post coming all about these so i won’t go in depth, but they have been hardcore favorites all month long.

ray ban wayfarers i have had these sunglasses for probably 7 years, wearing them on and off.  this summer they have been the only sunglasses i have liked to wear.  they are sturdy and perfectly molded to my face Рhighly recommend getting your sunglasses adjusted if you can, it makes all the difference.  i can throw them in my bag or in my car without worrying too much.  plus they have small bite marks from when my dog was a puppy so that makes me happy as well.bb june picks3.jpgentertainment //

the office Рi have never enjoyed the office.  it makes me sad, to be honest.  but after watching a few episodes with a friend, i got completely sucked in.  i finally see the humor behind it and that it is very sweet, not sad (for the most part).  and obviously i am in full support of jim and pam, just to clear that up.

a new book – i haven’t been reading as much lately as i was the first half of the year, but i just started reading a new book that i can’t not mention. ¬†i got jd salinger: the last interview while in new york and only just had the time to start reading, but i already love it. ¬†salinger is such an enigmatic but iconic figure in american literature and it is so interesting to finally learn about him, but it also makes me feel sad that he was essentially chased and stalked most of his life.

blogs – the opal gray¬†is yet another beauty blog, but there’s something about it that’s extra special. ¬†i believe i found the author on instagram and started reading her blog from there, but honestly i can’t quite remember. ¬†her photography is gorgeous and i really appreciate her product reviews. ¬†now if she would only post more often! ¬†another blog i have added to my daily reading list is free & native. ¬†this one is a different from my usual beauty and fashion blogs, but one that i am needing right now. ¬†free & native is the blog of herbalist and manifestation advisor lacy phillips, and she shares her techniques for more wholesome, free, and intentional living, as well as the people, places, and things inspiring her.

from day to dinner

bb day to dinner3.jpgi thought i would do a quick post on how i take my makeup from day to night. ¬†as you’ll see, i’m veeeeery simple especially with my daytime makeup, but i still like to make it a little fun for nighttime!¬†bb day to dinner1.jpgdaytime face //¬†

on this particular day, i was finally over a pretty bad acne breakout, so i was really digging my bare skin. ¬†i put on the bare minerals correcting concealer over my remaining hyper pigmentation and a swipe of rimmel santa rose blush on my cheeks. ¬†i got this blush while in europe this winter, but you can find it online at feel unique! ¬†it’s the prettiest sheer pinky peach with a slight glow. ¬†perfect for a blush-phobe like me. ¬†i used my trusty elf blush brush to apply.¬†bb day to dinner2.jpgdinner face //¬†

for my dinner face, i started with a bit more concealer and blush, really just to touch up what had faded during the day.  for a little shimmer i pulled out my favorite pacifica mystical supernatural palette.  these shadows are so soft and pigmented, i would compare them very closely to lorac shadows.  the shades in this palette are stunning Рand can you believe i use them all?!  for this night i blended the two lightest shades all over the lid and slightly into the crease, but not too high up, with a mac 217.  i also smudged that peachy-bronzey shade on my lower lash line using the bobbi brown smudge brush.  i curled my lashes with the surratt curlers but decided to forgo mascara since this was a pretty lightly toned look.  i dabbed a touch of kosas stardust on lips and called it a night! bb day to dinner4.jpgbb day to dinner selfie.JPGi apologize for this very awkward selfie.  what can you do?!

the mac groundwork dupe

bb groundwork vs creamy beige 1.jpgi have long sung the praises of the mac paint pots – specifically the shades groundwork and painterly. ¬†if you are not familiar, they are cream shadow pots in a wide variety of shades – groundwork being a warm midtone brown (described as neutral but i don’t find it to be) and painterly a pinky beige. ¬†i actually have a painterly dupe as well, but i got it in london and can’t find it in the us, so we will stick with groundwork today.

so here’s the amazing news about this dupe: it’s easier to find, it’s cheaper, it has better ingredients, and in my opinion, it’s a better color. ¬†what is this magical eye shadow you ask? ¬†it’s the maybelline color tattoo shadow in creamy beige. ¬†this is by no means a new product but it’s a new shade to me¬†and i’m pretty excited about it.bb groundwork vs creamy beige 2.jpgcreamy beige really isn’t a beigey color at all, but the perfect neutral brown. ¬†i find that creamy beige is slightly less warm than groundwork, so it doesn’t have the tendency to pull orange on my lids (i am very fair with cool toned skin). ¬†i like that the color is slightly more neutral so it will be perform better for skin tones that aren’t just warm-based. ¬†the formula is lighter than groundwork and a touch drier, so if you find the mac paint pots crease on you, i think you will be safer with these.

in terms of ingredients, the mac paint pots score a 4 on ewg while maybelline color tattoos score a 3. ¬†that’s not much of a difference, except the mac paint pots include the ingredient retinyl palmitate, or vitamin a palmitate, which scores a 9 and is a 100% in the high concern for developmental and reproductive toxicity category. ¬†ummm no thank you?!?!?!? ¬†even though all of the other ingredients score 1-3s, once i read that i just can’t forget it.bb ewg paint pot review.pngbb ewg color tattoo review.pngso yes, i will be giving away my mac groundwork and putting creamy beige into rotation instead. ¬†i will still keep painterly since it is my all time favorite cream eyeshadow, but if you do want to know about that dupe it’s another maybelline color tattoo called¬†creme de rose. ¬†it’s slightly darker in tone so i don’t find it quite as brightening on me, but i think¬†this will be a benefit for more skin tones that struggle with the lightness of painterly.

makeup for a minimalist: this or that?

as i’ve slowly worked to transform¬†my makeup bag from chemical-ridden to chemical-free, it’s been a fun challenge to find natural versions of my favorite items. ¬†and truthfully, it hasn’t been that hard to do! ¬†it really is amazing how many eco dupes there are for so-called conventional cosmetics.

below are¬†the natural product replacements¬†i’ve found for some of my favorite makeup items. ¬†i won’t be getting rid of all of these dupes as i detail below, but some of them just have to go.bb eco dupes taupe eyeshadow.jpgburberry pale barley eye shadow (top) vs rms swift shadow tt-73 (bottom) // pale barley is probably one of the most hyped up eyeshadows in the beauty world. ¬†it is a sheer taupe with a hint of shimmer that is perfect for every day wear. ¬†the formula is beautiful, but truthfully i’ve always been disappointed in the lack of pigmentation. ¬†i much prefer the rms shadow, which is a hair¬†darker than pale barley and still sheer, but in a better way if that makes sense. ¬†it is smooth, buildable, and long lasting and i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing. bb eco dupes brown matte.jpgurban decay naked¬†eye shadow (bottom)¬†and mac wedge eye shadow (middle)¬†vs jane iredale cappuccino eye shadow (top) // i’ve waxed lyrical about all of these shadows before and they basically are all the same. ¬†i always have naked hanging around as it’s just that good, and i purchased wedge as a potential replacement when i smashed my previous cappuccino to smitherines. ¬†i would say that naked is slightly warmer and more yellow, while wedge and cappuccino are equally cool and slightly stone colored. the price of jane iredale single shadows is $22 which really is expensive, especially compared to the $6 price of mac replacement shadows, but i know it’s worth it. ¬†this palette is especially great (also a potential dupe for the urban decay naked basics palette?), even though the price was steep (~ $50). ¬†it’s worth it to me to spend money on more natural options, so cappuccino is the winner here for sure.bb eco dupes cream eyeshadow.jpgmac painterly paint pot (top) vs gressa neve eye tint¬†(bottom)¬†// now these shadows are clearly not the same, but i find the effect to be nearly identical. ¬†i love painterly, really it’s my favorite mac eye shadow, and the fact that it neutralizes and brightens my lids in one swipe of creamy goodness. ¬†the gressa shadow works in a similar way for me because of my super fair skin, but i think on darker skin types it might appear too white. ¬†i am going to keep painterly around, but i like that neve offers a similar, if brighter, effect. ¬†plus the gressa eye tint formula is stunning – there is so much pigmentation in one tap of the product, and it’s a cream to powder that stays put all day with no creasing in sight.bb eco dupes cream blush.jpgclinique chubby stick for cheeks in ample apple¬†(top) vs tata harper lip&cheek in very charming¬†(bottom)¬†//¬†different application, almost identical colors. ¬†i am a huge fan of cream blush, and these two are no exceptions. ¬†i love the application of the chubby sticks, it really is so easy, but i like the formula of the tata harper offering slightly better. ¬†it’s more hydrating while the clinique is slightly more sticky.bb eco dupes pink lips.jpgbobbi brown lip color in sandwash pink¬†(top) vs bite beauty amuse bouche in meringue¬†(bottom)¬†// these are both little samples i got from sephora, but i think i can speak for the full sizes as well. ¬†not only are these colors quite similar, but the formulas are as well. ¬†both are creamy and hydrating, and offer a long lasting finish. ¬†meringue is just a hint peachier, while sandwash pink has a touch more brown/plum. ¬†bite fig is also similar, while erring on the pinker¬†side of the spectrum.bb eco dupes brown lips.jpgnars velvet matte lip pencil in bahama (top)¬†vs bite matte lip pencil in glace¬†(bottom)¬†// oh nars, why do your matte pencils have to be so gorgeous, but formulated with parabens?!?!?! ¬†fortunately, these two colors are virtually identical. ¬†they are both a gorgeous pinky brown, with fantastic staying power. ¬†bite is slightly more hydrating, which is definitely a bonus. ¬†goodbye nars, i love you. ¬†(plus i got the bite stick as a 100 point perk at sephora, so it was free. ¬†winner!)bb eco dupes red lips.jpgnars velvet matte lip pencil in dragon girl¬†(top) vs mahalo red my lips¬†(bottom)¬†// dragon girl is my all time favorite nars pencil. ¬†it’s a stunning pinky red that looks amazing patted into the lips. ¬†fortunately mahalo’s offering has¬†an identical color tone with that same blotted-in effect. ¬†mahalo is a creamier finish but lasting power is, again, amazing and i like that it is slightly more sheer at first, meaning i waste less product compared to the nars, which i basically completely remove for a lighter look.¬†bb eco dupes powder.jpgbare minerals original foundation in fairly medium¬†(left) vs rms un-powder in 0-1¬†(right)¬†// now i only have a sample size of the rms powder, but it’s too obvious of a dupe not to share. ¬†i’m a big fan of mineral foundations, and both of these are no exception, with the bare minerals being my first introduction to the category. ¬†now this is not to say that the bare minerals has super problematic ingredients, because it really doesn’t. ¬†plus it has the perk of sun protection. ¬†but for the purists, the rms is a great alternative. ¬†this shade is slightly more yellow, but there is a much smaller color range than bare minerals. ¬†i love¬†these equally and will be keeping them both in my makeup bag.

makeup for a minimalist: this or that?

warm weather bound

tomorrow me and (part of) the fam are headed to one of my favorite places…california, duh! ¬†you know i love a good travel post, so here’s what i’ve got coming along with me >>

makeup:bb warm weather bound makeup.jpgnothing too exciting, but i’m bringing along the usual nars creamy concealer in vanilla, w3ll people bronzer and brightening powders, gabriel eyeshadow in sable, rms swift shadow in tt-73¬†(side note, i haven’t talked about this shadow but it is amazing. ¬†so soft, so beautiful and is glowy instead of shimmery. ¬†i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing, even with nothing else on my face. ¬†total love), tata harper volumizing lip&cheek in very charming, gressa lip boost in bare, mini bite beauty lipstick in meringue, shu uemera eyelash curlers, real techniques powder and expert face brushes, meow meow tweet baking soda-free lavender deodorant, and ursa major deodorant. ¬†plus some hair twisties and clips, of course.

side note, does deodorant count as makeup or skincare? ¬†probably skincare, but i’m bucking the system as per.

skincare (&liquids):bb warm weather bound skincare.jpgagain, the usual suspects with some fun stuff thrown in. ¬†for example, i got a new sunscreen since my other one is too big for travelling and i’m not comfortable taking it out of its container and exposing it to sunlight. ¬†so: mychelle sun shield, cetaphil lotion, mini trilogy mist, mini trilogy cleansing balm, dr tung’s floss (sexy), maison louis marie no.4 bois de balincourt perfume oil, weleda skin food, go-to face hero, dr. bronner’s hand sanitizer, living libations all seeing eye cream.

and the rest:bb warm weather bound plane bag.jpgthe other stuff in my plane bag includes another of the miss fisher series by kerry greenwood, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag.  just picked up those last two the other day and am really excited to start reading them.  wallet is from minor history, sunglasses from ray-ban, and headphones from bose Рa lovely christmas from my sister quite a few years ago now.

jewelry: bb warm weather bound jewelry.jpgpretty pared down (for me) since i never end up wearing what i pack on trips anyways. tiffany silver bangle (my high school graduation present Рit says dream a little dream), thin gold rings from various etsy shops, gold ball chain that can be worn as a necklace or bracelet, mermaidbyhand (now eliza sloane jewels) abalone ring, beaded earrings that were a gift from my sis, sarah chloe monogram necklace, salt&summit turquoise ring, vintage turquoise flower earrings which were a birthday present a few years ago, gold ear pins from etsy, and anthropologie gold ear jackets that were my birthday present this year.  dude, my family gives me good stuff!

so there you go my lovelies.  what are your travel must-haves?  what am i forgetting?!!
