the concealer search

part of the fun of shopping, for me, is the search. ¬†the search for the best product, the best price, the best shopping experience. ¬†in fact, this is actually a defining¬†characteristic of many millennials,¬†research-backed buying¬†vs impulse buying. ¬†i learned this at a luncheon with refinery 29 while i was interning at elizabeth arden – how the methods of shopping of millennials effect retailers and how those retailers can persuade millennials to purchase in the moment or at least be a part of their research. ¬†ok wooooah tangent, let’s get back to the point of this post.
bb bare minerals concealer review 1.jpgi have been on the hunt for a pot concealer that i could wear as a pseudo-foundation – basically something ultra creamy that i could use to even out my skin but wouldn’t look or feel like i had anything on. ¬†i tried the w3ll people narcissist foundation stick first (obviously not a pot) and while i liked it a lot, the color match wasn’t perfect and it wasn’t exactly what i was looking for. ¬†it’s nice for brightening my face, but i don’t find myself reaching for it on a daily basis.

my next thought was the rms “un” cover-up, which is really the exact product i want, but none of the colors work for me. ¬†i’ve mentioned it a thousand times before, but my skin is very cool-toned, so the yellow-based shades of the “un” cover-up just do not work for me. ¬†glossier’s stretch concealer seems to have a more pink-based range, but to be honest i’m not that drawn to that brand anymore. ¬†i’m sooo tired of seeing all the marketing on every single instagram post that pops up on my feed and i’m just kind of over it, for now at least! ¬†some of their products are still staples for me (milky jelly cleanser,¬†moon mask, and coconut balm dotcom¬†are constants) so yes that concealer looks like it would be pretty perfect, but i’m going to pass on it for now.

then, very excitingly, nars came out with their new soft matte concealers. ¬†in pot form! ¬†pot form of my favorite concealer! – so i thought. ¬†but yes, as the name would suggest, these are more on the matte side. ¬†i tested them out at sephora and they are truly beautiful and creamy, while finishing to a matte or at least satin-matte formula. ¬†i just don’t think they would work on my drier skin and the coverage seems higher than what i’m looking for.

and finally, i remembered my old faithful – bare minerals. ¬†i actually owned the bare minerals correcting concealer quite a few years ago now, but i never really knew what to do with it so i got rid of it. ¬†i don’t typically wear concealer under my eyes and i wasn’t yet using any products like that on my face, so it went by the way side. ¬†but while browsing ulta the other day, this little pot of magic came back to me. ¬†bb bare minerals concealer review 2.jpgthis concealer is perfect for what i have been looking for. ¬†it’s creamy, glowy, and stays put all day. ¬†it can be sheered out for just a hint of coverage where needed, but is also perfect for spot concealing blemishes with a small brush. ¬†the color – light 1 of course – is the ideal mix of cool and warm tones, so it works to brighten while also matching my skin perfectly (it’s described as a light neutral cool). ¬†and truthfully, this does not budge. ¬†i find my nars radiant creamy concealer shifts around throughout the day, but i napped in the bare minerals and it still didn’t reveal the huge pimple i have on my chin. ¬†it doesn’t crease on my eyelids, nor under my eyes. ¬†i don’t wear undereye concealer, but it’s nice to know that i can with this and it will look totally natural and not like some kim k¬†triangle shit. ¬†also, it will be really easy for me to get another shade to match my tan in the summer because the shades are divided between warm and cool tones (though i get tan, i’m still cool-toned) – something that has always been difficult for me.

and since i’m sure you were wondering, this little baby has some pretty great ingredients. ¬†it scores a 2 on ewg, contains spf 20, and is free of parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, phthalates, gmo’s, and triclosan. i do wish it didn’t contain phenoxyethanol, but that is not a¬†huge problem for me at the moment. ¬†i also got the full coverage concealer brush which was one of the only brushes i ever owned throughout high school and most of college, and it really is a good one. ¬†i used to use it in my bare minerals powder to cover up, but it’s a great match for the correcting concealer as well. ¬†you can use the tip of it to pinpoint conceal, and use the rest for blending.bb bare minerals concealer review 4.jpgbb bare minerals concealer review 3.jpgmaybe it’s nostalgia, but i honestly love bare minerals and their products. ¬†they are always beautiful, effective, and great quality. ¬†some of my favorites are the original foundation, the flawless definition mascara (the only mascara i wore through high school and college¬†– i’m dying to get a fresh tube since i haven’t used it in a couple years), and the lip glosses (they¬†are discontinuing the marvelous moxie line but i have plans to get a couple of the gen nude buttercream glosses – they are stunning!). ¬†what’s your tried and true favorite brand?

monthly picks: march

bb march picks 3.jpggetting into a good skincare routine // i already posted about my skincare routine here, if you want to read more. ¬†some¬†standouts have been the previse hyaluronic acid and indie lee squalane oil – both incredibly hydrators. ¬†i have to say i don’t like the previse quite as much as the hylamide ha i was using, but it’s a close second. ¬†and the indie lee oil is beautiful – so lightweight and quick to sink in. ¬†i love applying these one after the other or mixed together if i’m in a hurry, morning and night. ¬†i’ve also been loving the living libations all seeing eye cream, which smells amazing and is a great basic under-eye moisturizer. ¬†i haven’t seen any drastic changes but i like using it and i think it’s a nice product.

weleda¬†pomegranate regenerating hand cream // you all know i love weleda’s lotions and potions, and this is no different. ¬†it’s a luscious lotion that is quick to absorb and hydrate my poor dry hands. ¬†i actually have started doing something that my dad does – which is apply hand lotion immediately after washing my hands and then wiping off the excess with a towel. ¬†it has made a drastic change in my hands – they are so much softer and more moisturized from my constant application, as well as using lotion when my hands¬†are still slightly damp.bb march picks 4.jpgrms swift shadow in tt-73 // again, i mentioned this in my california travel post, but it is officially my favorite eye shadow ever. ¬†i have been wearing it almost every day, with other makeup or without. ¬†it is the perfect brown, slightly shimmery and glowy shadow¬†that is subtle but keeps me looking grungy and slightly undone.

drinking water // this month i have really started to focus on my body. ¬†i’m exercising regularly and drinking a ton of water. ¬†i read that we should be drinking half of our body weight in ounces (100 pounds = 50 ounces per day) and i have been attempting to stick to that ratio. ¬†some days are harder than others, and frankly sometimes i just can’t be bothered with how often this much water makes me go to the bathroom, but for the most part i have been really good about it. ¬†i feel more energized, i think my skin looks better, and i like knowing i’m doing what’s good for my body. ¬†it’s the only one i have, you know?

going more natural // speaking of having one body, you may have noticed that over the past few months i’ve started transitioning into more natural beauty, skincare, haircare, and body care products. ¬†like i mentioned here and even above, my body and taking care of myself is becoming more and more important to me. ¬†using natural products is certainly not going to make or break me – if i’m going to get sick, i’m going to get sick, you know? – but it makes me feel so much better to be doing even this little bit of extra work to stay healthy. ¬†my father has had cancer almost my whole life and is very stubborn about going to the doctor, eating foods that are good for him, and even drinking water. ¬†he is truly a medical miracle since none of this seems to affect him too much, but for me it is comforting to know that i am doing what i can, almost for him in a way. ¬†i know that green tea and kale and avoiding parabens are great little ways to protect ourselves a little bit more against cancer and other illnesses, so that’s a path i want to follow.bb march picks 2.jpgfemale empowerment // more great books this month! while on vacation i finished another phryne fisher novel, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag. ¬†currently i’m almost done with the summer before the war by helen simonson, which my mom picked out for me and i am head-over-heels in love with. ¬†i highly recommend all of these novels. ¬†they all have powerful female leads – which seems to be¬†a theme in all of my favorite books! – as well as some slightly magical elements. ¬†the house at the end of hope street was especially beautiful and i couldn’t have read it at a better time. ¬†i’m so glad i’m back into my regular reading habits – it took a while after college for me to get back into read for fun. ¬†reading has gotten me through so much in my life and has truly allowed me to travel the world from my little bed. ¬†next in my reading queue is the storied life of aj fikry by gabrielle zevin, desert solitaire by edward abbey, and girl waits with a gun by amy stewart, and¬†offshore by penelope fitzgerald.

spotify // i’ve been using spotify for the past few months after my sister introduced me to its magical powers. ¬†this month i have been absolutely in love with a number of playlists – most of them 60s and 70s oriented. ¬†i’m also having fun creating my own dream playlists – i’m at babybohemian if you want to follow along. ¬†i’m working on a really good “california” set right now if you are interested.

samathome518 youtube // mercedes of l’amour et la musique mentions sam of samathome518 a ton, so i finally got the hint and checked out her videos. ¬†she is the absolute cutest thing (and 100% reminds me of my mom’s best friend and my surrogate aunt) and i love her love of makeup. ¬†she got into makeup more recently than most – which i totally relate to – and has an amazing eye for colors, textures, etc. ¬†she is half a conventional makeup purchaser and half an eco makeup purchaser, so i love to see her picks and opinions. ¬†truly a ray of sunshine and i highly recommend checking out her channel.bb march picks 1.jpgand that’s it! ¬†march has been a very stressful but rewarding month. ¬†i finally feel like i have my head on straight and know what the future (or at least near future/ok next few months) will hold for me. ¬†i’m so excited for this next phase of my life to begin – to be studying and learning again, to have my own home, to meet new people and make new friends – and i’m so excited to keep sharing my little life with you here on baby bohemian. ¬†thanks for following along, for sharing the love, and for being my people.

hello, beauty

beginning in 2015, whole foods has annually released a special edition makeup bag filled with full size and deluxe sample size products. ¬†and this year’s bag has arrived! ¬†i spotted mine at whole foods a few days ago, and the official arrival date of the bags was march 24th. ¬†i was going to wait to review the bag after i had tried everything, but i decided to it now so you all can get the bags if you are interested. ¬†did i mention it cost only $18 for 11 products, including 4 full size items and a handmade makeup bag? ¬†maybe i should have given you that information first. ¬†feel free to run to whole foods and then come back to the rest of this post.bb whole foods hello beauty 1.jpglet me just say, i am so impressed with the contents of this year’s bag. ¬†this is my first one so i can’t speak to previous editions, but i’m confident they have all been equally as amazing. ¬†the amount of products you receive, the gorgeous makeup bag, and all for under $20? ¬†insane. ¬†bb whole foods hello beauty 2.jpgthe bag //

so let’s get to the goods! ¬†to start, the piece&co makeup bag itself is handmade by artisans in india, featuring organic cotton and using traditional weaving, tasseling, and indigo-printing techniques. ¬†piece&co¬†provides employment for women in need. ¬†the bag is super soft indigo with a gold and white tassel and a navy, gold, and silver interior.¬†bb whole foods hello beauty 3.jpgthe skincare //

the first full size product i tried is the acure pore clarifying red clay mask, 1.7 oz., $15. ¬†this mask is exactly what i didn’t know i needed. ¬†it has both exfoliating and hydrating properties, revealing toned and glowing skin. ¬†put on a thin layer for 15 minutes or until dry, then add water and watch the magic happen! ¬†exfoliating granuals are revealed, followed by a beautiful foam, and can then be rinsed completely clean. ¬†it’s gentle but action-packed, to say the least. ¬†plus the color is a stunning red rust that i’m in love with.

the second full size product is product is the evanhealy wild carrot nourishing eye balm, .5 oz, $20. ¬†i haven’t tried this yet because i am already using an eye cream, but i have seen this at whole foods before and have been very interested in it. ¬†evanhealy is one of my favorite brands, so i guarantee we will all love this. ¬†featuring cocoa butter, sunflower, avocado, rosehip, and coconut oils, this balm is perfect for smoothing and protecting the eyes.

next up is the andalou naturals apricot probiotic cleansing milk, 1.7 oz. ¬†this shit smells incredible. ¬†like…i just want to smell it all day. ¬†just fruity, energizing goodness. ¬†i actually have been wanting a super hydrating, more milky cleanser for my dry winter skin so you can imagine how thrilled i am with this. ¬†it is indeed milky and conditioning, but also cleansing and brightening. ¬†i wouldn’t use this by itself if i had sunscreen and makeup on, but paired with a makeup remover i think it will be perfect.

one of the smaller samples is the weleda soothing facial lotion, .23 oz.  it sounds like a pretty basic, restorative moisturizer but is packed with yummy ingredients and based on sweet almond oil.

the moisturizer that has really blown me away is the derma-e hydrating night cream with hyaluronic acid, .5 oz.  i absolutely love this for both day and night.  it is thick, but not too thick to be worn under makeup or alone during the day.  i really feel like this penetrates my skin and assists the other moisturizing/hydrating products that i use.  it is packed with great ingredients including antioxidants, vitamin c, vitamin e, and of course hyaluronic acid.  i am definitely going to pick up a full size of this, and perhaps the day cream as well.

another exfoliating item included is the juice beauty green apple peel sensitive, .26 oz. ¬†i must say i’m a little nervous about this item because i’m really not a peel girl, but i’m intrigued by the inclusion of “sensitive” in the title. ¬†this is an aha-based exfoliant that boasts more even skin tone and texture as well as nourishment and hydration. ¬†we shall see!

something i am extremely excited to try is the dr. haushka facial toner, 1 oz. ¬†i haven’t tried anything from this brand yet as it is really quite pricey, so i’m excited to get a sneaky, and very generous, sample here. ¬†this toner is both balancing and hydrating, with toning and brightening properties. ¬†it has a very short list of ingredients and is actually in a spray bottle (glass!) that i really appreciate. ¬†i look forward to trying this out.

the last skincare item is a sample of the trilogy coq10 booster oil, .17 oil. ¬†you all know that i like trilogy a lot, so i’m excited to try this. ¬†this oil is moisturizing, nourishing, recharging, and revitalizing, with a ton of amazing ingredients packed in. ¬†it is also for anti-aging, featuring collagen boosting effects and protection against free radical damage. ¬†bb whole foods hello beauty 4.jpgthe beauty //

the third full size item is the mineral fusion volumizing mascara in jet (black), .57 oz., $16. ¬†i won’t be trying this for a little while since i am currently using up¬†a brown mascara and a black mascara, but i look forward to trying out another eco mascara option! ¬†this seems like a pretty basic mascara wand, not too big, not too small. ¬†it is supposed to be very gentle and doesn’t clump, flake, or smudge.

the fourth full size item is the pacifica devocean lipstick in tenderness (nude pink), .07 oz., $10. ¬†this lipstick is almost more of a matte balm that i would compare to the glossier generation g lipsticks. ¬†it’s hydrating and creamy, but also matte which i love. ¬†the color is a beautiful nudey, rosey, pink aka the dream, and it’s just really nice to have around or in your bag. ¬†total love.

the last item is another bag essential; the whole foods market dry skin hand cream in peony, mint, and blackberry, 1 oz. ¬†i haven’t tried this particular scent, but i have tried this hand lotion before and it is great for dry hands. ¬†ingredients include argan oil and shea butter (actually it is 20% shea butter), so you know it’s going to be soothing and moisturizing.

so that’s everything that’s in the bag. ¬†i mean, can you believe this thing is priced at $18?? ¬†for those 4 full size items alone, this would be over $60. ¬†bb whole foods hello beauty 5.jpgall images are my own, please credit if taking.

hello, beauty

makeup for a minimalist: this or that?

as i’ve slowly worked to transform¬†my makeup bag from chemical-ridden to chemical-free, it’s been a fun challenge to find natural versions of my favorite items. ¬†and truthfully, it hasn’t been that hard to do! ¬†it really is amazing how many eco dupes there are for so-called conventional cosmetics.

below are¬†the natural product replacements¬†i’ve found for some of my favorite makeup items. ¬†i won’t be getting rid of all of these dupes as i detail below, but some of them just have to go.bb eco dupes taupe eyeshadow.jpgburberry pale barley eye shadow (top) vs rms swift shadow tt-73 (bottom) // pale barley is probably one of the most hyped up eyeshadows in the beauty world. ¬†it is a sheer taupe with a hint of shimmer that is perfect for every day wear. ¬†the formula is beautiful, but truthfully i’ve always been disappointed in the lack of pigmentation. ¬†i much prefer the rms shadow, which is a hair¬†darker than pale barley and still sheer, but in a better way if that makes sense. ¬†it is smooth, buildable, and long lasting and i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing. bb eco dupes brown matte.jpgurban decay naked¬†eye shadow (bottom)¬†and mac wedge eye shadow (middle)¬†vs jane iredale cappuccino eye shadow (top) // i’ve waxed lyrical about all of these shadows before and they basically are all the same. ¬†i always have naked hanging around as it’s just that good, and i purchased wedge as a potential replacement when i smashed my previous cappuccino to smitherines. ¬†i would say that naked is slightly warmer and more yellow, while wedge and cappuccino are equally cool and slightly stone colored. the price of jane iredale single shadows is $22 which really is expensive, especially compared to the $6 price of mac replacement shadows, but i know it’s worth it. ¬†this palette is especially great (also a potential dupe for the urban decay naked basics palette?), even though the price was steep (~ $50). ¬†it’s worth it to me to spend money on more natural options, so cappuccino is the winner here for sure.bb eco dupes cream eyeshadow.jpgmac painterly paint pot (top) vs gressa neve eye tint¬†(bottom)¬†// now these shadows are clearly not the same, but i find the effect to be nearly identical. ¬†i love painterly, really it’s my favorite mac eye shadow, and the fact that it neutralizes and brightens my lids in one swipe of creamy goodness. ¬†the gressa shadow works in a similar way for me because of my super fair skin, but i think on darker skin types it might appear too white. ¬†i am going to keep painterly around, but i like that neve offers a similar, if brighter, effect. ¬†plus the gressa eye tint formula is stunning – there is so much pigmentation in one tap of the product, and it’s a cream to powder that stays put all day with no creasing in sight.bb eco dupes cream blush.jpgclinique chubby stick for cheeks in ample apple¬†(top) vs tata harper lip&cheek in very charming¬†(bottom)¬†//¬†different application, almost identical colors. ¬†i am a huge fan of cream blush, and these two are no exceptions. ¬†i love the application of the chubby sticks, it really is so easy, but i like the formula of the tata harper offering slightly better. ¬†it’s more hydrating while the clinique is slightly more sticky.bb eco dupes pink lips.jpgbobbi brown lip color in sandwash pink¬†(top) vs bite beauty amuse bouche in meringue¬†(bottom)¬†// these are both little samples i got from sephora, but i think i can speak for the full sizes as well. ¬†not only are these colors quite similar, but the formulas are as well. ¬†both are creamy and hydrating, and offer a long lasting finish. ¬†meringue is just a hint peachier, while sandwash pink has a touch more brown/plum. ¬†bite fig is also similar, while erring on the pinker¬†side of the spectrum.bb eco dupes brown lips.jpgnars velvet matte lip pencil in bahama (top)¬†vs bite matte lip pencil in glace¬†(bottom)¬†// oh nars, why do your matte pencils have to be so gorgeous, but formulated with parabens?!?!?! ¬†fortunately, these two colors are virtually identical. ¬†they are both a gorgeous pinky brown, with fantastic staying power. ¬†bite is slightly more hydrating, which is definitely a bonus. ¬†goodbye nars, i love you. ¬†(plus i got the bite stick as a 100 point perk at sephora, so it was free. ¬†winner!)bb eco dupes red lips.jpgnars velvet matte lip pencil in dragon girl¬†(top) vs mahalo red my lips¬†(bottom)¬†// dragon girl is my all time favorite nars pencil. ¬†it’s a stunning pinky red that looks amazing patted into the lips. ¬†fortunately mahalo’s offering has¬†an identical color tone with that same blotted-in effect. ¬†mahalo is a creamier finish but lasting power is, again, amazing and i like that it is slightly more sheer at first, meaning i waste less product compared to the nars, which i basically completely remove for a lighter look.¬†bb eco dupes powder.jpgbare minerals original foundation in fairly medium¬†(left) vs rms un-powder in 0-1¬†(right)¬†// now i only have a sample size of the rms powder, but it’s too obvious of a dupe not to share. ¬†i’m a big fan of mineral foundations, and both of these are no exception, with the bare minerals being my first introduction to the category. ¬†now this is not to say that the bare minerals has super problematic ingredients, because it really doesn’t. ¬†plus it has the perk of sun protection. ¬†but for the purists, the rms is a great alternative. ¬†this shade is slightly more yellow, but there is a much smaller color range than bare minerals. ¬†i love¬†these equally and will be keeping them both in my makeup bag.

makeup for a minimalist: this or that?

warm weather bound

tomorrow me and (part of) the fam are headed to one of my favorite places…california, duh! ¬†you know i love a good travel post, so here’s what i’ve got coming along with me >>

makeup:bb warm weather bound makeup.jpgnothing too exciting, but i’m bringing along the usual nars creamy concealer in vanilla, w3ll people bronzer and brightening powders, gabriel eyeshadow in sable, rms swift shadow in tt-73¬†(side note, i haven’t talked about this shadow but it is amazing. ¬†so soft, so beautiful and is glowy instead of shimmery. ¬†i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing, even with nothing else on my face. ¬†total love), tata harper volumizing lip&cheek in very charming, gressa lip boost in bare, mini bite beauty lipstick in meringue, shu uemera eyelash curlers, real techniques powder and expert face brushes, meow meow tweet baking soda-free lavender deodorant, and ursa major deodorant. ¬†plus some hair twisties and clips, of course.

side note, does deodorant count as makeup or skincare? ¬†probably skincare, but i’m bucking the system as per.

skincare (&liquids):bb warm weather bound skincare.jpgagain, the usual suspects with some fun stuff thrown in. ¬†for example, i got a new sunscreen since my other one is too big for travelling and i’m not comfortable taking it out of its container and exposing it to sunlight. ¬†so: mychelle sun shield, cetaphil lotion, mini trilogy mist, mini trilogy cleansing balm, dr tung’s floss (sexy), maison louis marie no.4 bois de balincourt perfume oil, weleda skin food, go-to face hero, dr. bronner’s hand sanitizer, living libations all seeing eye cream.

and the rest:bb warm weather bound plane bag.jpgthe other stuff in my plane bag includes another of the miss fisher series by kerry greenwood, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag.  just picked up those last two the other day and am really excited to start reading them.  wallet is from minor history, sunglasses from ray-ban, and headphones from bose Рa lovely christmas from my sister quite a few years ago now.

jewelry: bb warm weather bound jewelry.jpgpretty pared down (for me) since i never end up wearing what i pack on trips anyways. tiffany silver bangle (my high school graduation present Рit says dream a little dream), thin gold rings from various etsy shops, gold ball chain that can be worn as a necklace or bracelet, mermaidbyhand (now eliza sloane jewels) abalone ring, beaded earrings that were a gift from my sis, sarah chloe monogram necklace, salt&summit turquoise ring, vintage turquoise flower earrings which were a birthday present a few years ago, gold ear pins from etsy, and anthropologie gold ear jackets that were my birthday present this year.  dude, my family gives me good stuff!

so there you go my lovelies.  what are your travel must-haves?  what am i forgetting?!!

warm weather bound
