the mac groundwork dupe

bb groundwork vs creamy beige 1.jpgi have long sung the praises of the mac paint pots – specifically the shades groundwork and painterly. ¬†if you are not familiar, they are cream shadow pots in a wide variety of shades – groundwork being a warm midtone brown (described as neutral but i don’t find it to be) and painterly a pinky beige. ¬†i actually have a painterly dupe as well, but i got it in london and can’t find it in the us, so we will stick with groundwork today.

so here’s the amazing news about this dupe: it’s easier to find, it’s cheaper, it has better ingredients, and in my opinion, it’s a better color. ¬†what is this magical eye shadow you ask? ¬†it’s the maybelline color tattoo shadow in creamy beige. ¬†this is by no means a new product but it’s a new shade to me¬†and i’m pretty excited about it.bb groundwork vs creamy beige 2.jpgcreamy beige really isn’t a beigey color at all, but the perfect neutral brown. ¬†i find that creamy beige is slightly less warm than groundwork, so it doesn’t have the tendency to pull orange on my lids (i am very fair with cool toned skin). ¬†i like that the color is slightly more neutral so it will be perform better for skin tones that aren’t just warm-based. ¬†the formula is lighter than groundwork and a touch drier, so if you find the mac paint pots crease on you, i think you will be safer with these.

in terms of ingredients, the mac paint pots score a 4 on ewg while maybelline color tattoos score a 3. ¬†that’s not much of a difference, except the mac paint pots include the ingredient retinyl palmitate, or vitamin a palmitate, which scores a 9 and is a 100% in the high concern for developmental and reproductive toxicity category. ¬†ummm no thank you?!?!?!? ¬†even though all of the other ingredients score 1-3s, once i read that i just can’t forget it.bb ewg paint pot review.pngbb ewg color tattoo review.pngso yes, i will be giving away my mac groundwork and putting creamy beige into rotation instead. ¬†i will still keep painterly since it is my all time favorite cream eyeshadow, but if you do want to know about that dupe it’s another maybelline color tattoo called¬†creme de rose. ¬†it’s slightly darker in tone so i don’t find it quite as brightening on me, but i think¬†this will be a benefit for more skin tones that struggle with the lightness of painterly.

british beauty

IMG_4346.jpgthanks to all my favorite british beauty bloggers and vloggers, including but not limited to anna of the anna edit (formerly vivianna does makeup), estee lalonde, amelia liana, and suzie of hello october, i have had a¬†lengthy british cosmetics wish list for quite some time (read: years). ¬†so when i was finally able to high-tail it to boots (thanks to my dad for understanding that he should leave alone for this event), i can ecstatically say that i found everything on my list. ¬†and almost peed my pants with excitement every time i wandered into a new aisle. ¬†so here’s what i got my little paws on…
IMG_4348 (1).jpgmaybelline color tattoo in creme de rose Рcredit to suzie on this one.  we can get these cream shadows in the states, but not in this color and i have had my eyes on this mac painterly dupe for quite some time.

maybelline color stay 7-day nail polish – credit to amelia. ¬†she has spoken on these polishes many a time, and usually has them on, so i have wanted to grab a couple shades for probably a year now. ¬†upon arriving home i immediately put on ___ and the application was excellent. ¬†i’ll let you know about that whole 7-day thing.

l’oreal d’huile nail polish – credit again goes to amelia. ¬†that girl knows her nail polish!

barry m nail polish Рspecifically the shade eat my dust.  credit to anna on this one.  she loves a good pastel light blue polish, so i definitely trust her opinion, and when she wore this one for the whole of summer 2015, it went on the list as well.  *also i am so glad i had plenty of room in my liquids bag for all these nail polish bottles!!

bourjois 123 cc cream – credit goes to estee for this guy. ¬†a pale skin friend, estee loves a light, luminious base and has mentioned the bourjois foundations, and this product specifically for years. ¬†i got the lightest shade, which has a nice neutral undertone. ¬†i was pleased that it didn’t appear to much on the yellow side. ¬†i have only tested a little of this, but it beautifully evens out my skin tone without being cakey or drying or too heavy.

soap and glory solar powder bronzer – this is the originally item that went on my wishlist, thanks to anna and lily pebbles. ¬†i even got a back up of this because i was that excited. ¬†this is a beautiful, light bronzer that has a light sheen and shimmer to it. ¬†it appears to be similar to the physician’s formula butter bronzer, but obviously better because it has all that british hype! ¬†we can get soap & glory in the states, including some of their powder products, but not this specific item.

l’oreal eye shadow – specifically shade 201. ¬†big thanks to amelia, again. ¬†we have these in the states now, but i think the shade range is different and honestly i wanted to get the original just because. ¬†these are kind of like a pressed pigment but not as hard to work with, and just all around a really beautiful sheeny shadow.

maybelline color drama lip pencil – shade nude perfection. ¬†for the little time that i was avidly following stephanie of cocochic, i knew that i had to have this. ¬†it’s a matte lip pencil similar to the nars velvet mattes, and this is a really nice peachy sort of nude.

collection concealer – ok i can’t even credit this to one specific person. ¬†maybe barbara of the persian babe in particular? ¬†this is like the concealer of the uk, and obviously i had to have it. ¬†i got the shade fair, and while this does oxodize a bit, i think it is going to be a firm favorite. ¬†i’ll let you know! (not pictured because i’ve put this away until i finish my current concealer)

sleek face palette – i think it’s back to amelia on this one. ¬†i got the bronzer, highlighter, and blush palette. ¬†the bronzer reminds me of benefit’s hoola and the blush of nars orgasm. ¬†plus its so sleek, if you’ll excuse the pun!!

ok that finishes up this ridiculously long list! ¬†i needed absolutely 0% of these products, but after wanting them for so long, i couldn’t convince myself to not buy any of these. ¬†british drugstores, boot’s in particular, just seem so cool and well done, and the products truly are amazing. ¬†cvs, walgreen’s, and duane reade actually seem like crap in comparison, but i’m sure it’s just cause that’s what i know and go to. ¬†yayyyyy!

an impromptu new york trip

when you get the chance to take a quick trip to new york city, you do it. ¬†ditch your boss, ditch your boyfriend, ditch real life and goooooo! ¬†and no trip to new york is complete without some serious buyer’s remorse and an empty¬†wallet, so here are the things that i picked up while there…and surprisingly, i don’t feel too remorseful!IMG_4312 (1).jpgsephora eye shadow in snakeskin dress // i have been looking for the perfect golden olive eye shadow for a little while now. ¬†i was just about to splurge on mac’s sumptuous olive ($16) when i came across this sephora eye shadow. ¬†overall i really think sephora’s eponymous makeup line is full of some really great hidden gems, and this eyeshadow is no exception! ¬†it’s a huge pan, the exact color i wanted, and really high-end, all for $10!

sephora must have large powder brush // this is my all time favorite bronzer and powder brush. ¬†it’s also probably the first makeup brush i ever owned, besides the ones that came in the bare minerals starter set (i got that for my 15th birthday and i was just over the ¬†moon – hello introduction to makeup – i used to use all the powders all over so my face was reminiscent of a pumpkin). ¬†i got rid of mine a while ago because the handle broke and i resisted buying a new one as they are relatively pricey, but i’m glad i finally splurged.

maybelline master strobe in light 100 // i spotted this randomly while at the drugstore one day. ¬†it looks super pink in the tube, but is actually a really nice soft glow when i apply it to my skin. ¬†i haven’t tried them, but i think this looks a lot like the glossier haloscope highlighters – they even have another more golden shade that is very reminiscent of the haloscope in topaz. ¬†does anyone know if these are a good dupe for the glossier?

rms lip and skin balm // you might know that i absolutely love using vaseline as my eye cream at night, and on any really dry areas on my face and lips. ¬†i know that vaseline is not actually the best for you, so i’ve been looking for an alternative to this staple product. ¬†i read that this rms balm is basically the same as vaseline but all natural, so i decided to treat myself and see if this is similar/better/worse. ¬†so far i really love it and feel like it is even more moisturizing on my undereyes and eyelids, but i really hate the smell. ¬†i got the vanilla (i preferred it to the cocoa) but i hope that rms releases an unscented version.

surfistas travelogue¬†// i spotted this mag (i¬†think there is only one issue out right now)¬†while in the lou&grey store on fifth avenue and i couldn’t leave without it. ¬†it’s kind of a surfer/bohemian spirit travel guide, with this issue focusing on indonesia, venezuela, peru, and mexico. ¬†i’m excited to read it cover to cover. ¬†also the lou&grey store is so cool! ¬†a must visit if you are in the area.

madewell northside sunglasses in spruce horn // i don’t think i’ve ever gotten a pair of sunglasses at madewell before, but i saw these and knew i needed them. ¬†they actually remind me a lot of this¬†ray-ban pair that i have been contemplating purchasing, but for a much more realistic price. ¬†i really like the sort of black and tan stripey/tortoise pattern and they sit well on my face. ¬†still a bit pricey but worth it and they are now on sale online!

gap modern long sleeve tees // i needed some basic long sleeve shirts and these are the best so i’m told! ¬†they’re thick and stretchy, and are a nice length. ¬†can’t feel bad about buying staples! (not shown)

makeup for a minimalist: drugstore favorites

IMG_2960maybelline fit me concealer: i have the shade 15 fair and it is pretty spot on similar with nars radiant creamy concealer in vanilla. ¬†i love this concealer as more summery option to the heavier, drier nars concealer. ¬†it’s very similar in coverage but the formula is creamier and more liquid-y. ¬†it is helpful to set this though, which i don’t have to do with the nars.

revlon matte balm:¬†i have the color sultry and i am dying to get more of these. ¬†this is a beautiful dusty rose neutral shade with the perfect hint of brown.¬†¬†these are super creamy but with a matte finish and not drying at all. ¬†they don’t have a ton of color options but it is a nice range that isn’t too boring.

l’oreal color riche nail polish: in after hours and tangerine crush. ¬†i love these polishes! ¬†the brush is wide and curved at the bottom so it fits the nail perfectly. ¬†the formula’s are amazing and they have some great color options. ¬†i only have these two shades but am definitely looking to add more to my stash.

nyx butter gloss: i have the shades creme brulee eclair (both pictured here). ¬†these glosses are nicely pigmented and super smooth and buttery (oohhh shocker). ¬†i love the small packaging and the scent of these glosses. ¬†plus they aren’t sticky glossy. ¬†that’s always a good thing.

nyx mega shine lip gloss: i have the shades beige and some other one that the name wore off of (not pictured) –¬†it’s a light peachy pink. ¬†these glosses are probably less pigmented than the butter glosses, but to me they are all basically the same. ¬†if i’m going to wear gloss, you bet it’s a nyx gloss.

no7 stay perfect shade and define cream shadow sticks: pictured here in cool mink, but i also own coffee bean (warm brown), velvet truffle (a cool toned brown), and deep purple (a shimmering navy). ¬†i use the darker shades for smudgy eyeliner looks and cool mink all over the lid. these are great dupes for the laura mercier caviar shadow sticks which are the only other cream eyeshadow sticks i’ve used, but i heard they are also a good dupe for the¬†by terry ombre blackstars.

l’oreal telescopic mascara: ¬†i’m terrible at saying whether things are dupes or not, but i think this is a pretty good dupe for my beloved bare minerals flawless definition mascara. ¬†it creates great definition but very naturally, which is just how i like my lashes to be look. ¬†if you like natural lashes but a little bit enhanced, i would definitely check this mascara out. ¬†just make sure you wipe off some of the product on the bristles – sometimes i find you can get too much and that’s never a good look.

makeup for a minimalist: last night’s face

IMG_2654i went out to dinner last night and wanted to wear a little bit of subtle makeup with my simple outfit of dark wash skinny jeans, oversized/flowy/sheer white sweater, and gladiator style sandals,¬†so here’s what i popped on:

glossier priming lotion

maybelline fit me concealer in fair (15)

nars laguna bronzer

burberry wet and dry eyeshadow in pale barley

elizabeth arden beautiful color precision glide eyeliner in java – smudged into upper lash line – this eyeliner is great for a really smudgy look

bare minerals flawless definition mascara in black – on the upper lashes only

christian dior creme de rose

simple but smudgy.  my favorite.
