remember me?!

oh hi!  remember me?!?!  i mentioned a little bit about my current wifi situation on instagram, but let me go into a little more detail.  i am currently finishing my master’s degree by teaching on the navajo reservation in arizona. so far it’s going really really well, and the only hiccup is that i don’t have wifi in my room (i’m living in the dorm attached to the high school with other students).  i’ve been able to pick up wifi here and there, and a kind teacher told me i can pop by his place whenever i need to use the internet, so hopefully i will be able to start posting again. i did start another blog to record my journey, mostly for family and school purposes, but feel free to follow me over there as well if you’re interested: leahgoeswest.wordpress.com (though again, it’s been difficult for me to post).IMG_3377  truly this experience has already been pretty incredible, and though not everything has been smooth, nor will it be in its entirety, i’m so excited to be on this adventure that i’ve been planning for a long time.  if anyone has any suggestions of things i need to see/places i need to go while i’m in the southwest, please let me know!! i want to go any and everywhere.  i’m currently spending labor day weekend in durango, colorado and don’t ever want to leave this state so that’s a new development!IMG_3407 i have a very limited selection of “things” with me – makeup, skincare, clothes, accessories – so i thought it might be fun to look at the things that i’m missing the most. nothing like being separated from your belongings for 4 months to show you what you really love.

// s t y l e //

coach duffle bag // i have mentioned this bag before on the blog, but this is my favorite purse of any that i own.  it’s a vintage (i think 70s) black leather coach duffle, which is one of their most iconic shapes.  it’s essentially a big bucket bag with an adjustable strap – so i either wear it close to my underarm or even crossbody if it’s extra heavy.  it’s such a classic shape and style and fits my everyday life. i miss you bb! i’m sorry i couldn’t bring you!

baggy levi’s 501s // i have a bunch of levi’s but i only brought my 501 skinnies.  my baggy ones are perfectly soft, worn in, and ripped, and i love that they’re slightly cropped (i cut them myself naturally) and slightly too big.  i love them for every season, with sneakers, with birks, with army boots.  i actually thought that i packed them, but apparently not!  i have no clue what wash i have, but i linked a similar looking pair.

black skinny strap rainbows // i absolutely live in my black rainbows all summer long (and every pair of rainbows i’ve ever had since 7th grade).  i didn’t bring them in favor of my birks, but i wish i had these just for simplicity’s sake.  i do find myself wearing socks with birkenstocks quite a bit these days, which is probably not a habit i should get into!!!!

cape cod bracelets // i love my two little silver bangles with silver or gold screw balls.  is anyone else familiar with these?  i usually wear them during the summer and then phase them out come fall, but i didn’t do that this year and i don’t have them with me.  i go through phases of wearing a lot of necklaces or a lot of bracelets, and right now i’m forgoing both to be simple and under-the-radar.  no fun!bb feather // b e a u t y //

igk 1995 shampoo // i’m in love with this texturing shampoo.  it just wasn’t feasible for me to bring something so particular and that i don’t use every time i wash my hair, but this is my favorite texturing shampoo of the few i’ve tried.  the r+co cactus shampoo is my second in command, but the 1995 is just a little grittier.

dedcool fragrance 02 // i don’t wear perfume enough to justify bringing it (i just brought my usual sandalwood fragrance oil), but i really miss this scent.  it’s one of those that just melts into your skin and seems like what you actually smell like, a little bit woodsy and masculine, a little bit clean, a little bit warm.  sandalwood is my favorite scent of all time, and that is the base of 02 with something extra.IMG_3349bb dorm. . .

june picks

bb june picks1.jpga face wash duo // i’ve been mixing cleansers this month by using the trader joe’s nourish cleanser (i’ve linked this to the amazon listing, but it was $4 in store, not $14) as a first cleanse (more soapy, but not stripping) and following up with the first aid beauty cleanser (more moisturizing).  they work together to perfectly wash my face and control my acne while also offering moisture and hydration.  and i just feel really clean in the best way.

mad hippie vitamin c serum // this is my second bottle of this magic potion and i really do love it.  because my acne is curing due to a variety of products i can’t necessarily say this is making that much of a difference, but i do think it makes my skin brighter, more even, and very hydrated.bb june picks2.jpggriffin remedy stimulating shampoo // i am in love with this shampoo.  truly, in love.  i’ve previously written about the pura d’or shampoo and conditioner, but i think this takes the cake in helping my hair feel healthy and strong.  if you aren’t used to sulfate-free products this might not be for you, but i love that it brings out my natural texture without feeling soft or flat.  and i really do think it’s stimulating!  i usually skip conditioner for added grit (i’m sure this is bad but whatever).

nars pro prime smudge proof eye shadow base // now this is a funny favorite because i don’t actually have it in my possession currently.  after finishing up my tube i decided to try out the wet-n-wild eye shadow primer that is supposedly a dupe for the nars.  and it is terrible!  it completely dries out my eyelids and is too smudge-proof in that it feels like the shadow is glued to my eyelids.  i cannot wait to repurchase the nars and this has shown me that i’ll suck up the price because i don’t want anything else.bb june picks3.jpgh&m jean jackets // i’ve lived in my madewell jean jacket for about 5 years now and just needed a change.  i first found this amazing washed pink jean jacket at h&m and after falling in love with the fit i searched around for a regular denim one as well.  they were pretty pricey at $49 but i’ve been living in them.  i don’t typically shop at h&m but i know i’ll have these jackets for years to come.bb june picks5.jpgeve babitz // the true los angeles queen.  i absolutely adore her style of writing and the stories she tells.  i cannot get enough!  there is a reason why we think of l.a. the way we do, and eve is why.  i’m currently finishing eve’s hollywood, absolutely adored slow days, fast company, and can’t wait to start her novels.

murder maps // a netflix show highlighting london’s nasty murderers in the 18 and 1900s.  sooo creepy and so good.  love the mix of history and horror.

won’t you be my neighbor // hands down the most beautiful movie i’ve ever seen.  needless to say i was moved to tears.  i can’t say much more than that because i really am speechless.bb june picks4.jpg. . .

february picks

it was an extremely busy month for me, so not a ton of picks but the ones i do have are even more special and reliable.  this month was about keeping myself sane and healthy, which for the most part i did a good job of, minus the fact that i’m currently in bed with strep throat!  what were your favorites for the month of february?bbfebpicks5.jpg// skincare //

origins original skin retexturizing mask // this is a beautiful exfoliating mask with a base of rose clay, which is a gentle way to draw impurities out of the skin.  when you wash this mask off, you also get a very gentle physical exfoliating effect thanks to jojoba beads included in the mask.  this mask never makes my dry skin feel too dry or tight, just cleansed and purified.  highly recommend at least trying a sample – it’s the best clay mask i’ve ever used.bbfebpicks4.jpgpaula’s choice skin perfecting 2% bha toner // after struggling with my skin for the past 6 months, my dermatologist recommended me to add an antibiotic and differin cream onto the aczone cream that i already use.  and i decided that i just didn’t want to do it.  the creams are so drying on my already dry skin and i always react poorly to them for months.  after some hefty research, i decided to try the pc 2% bha toner which is great for clogged pores especially.  and after using it for 2 straight weeks, i am finally over the purging period and i am so impressed.  my skin isn’t perfect, but it is so much better and any pimple that i get clears up quickly and leaves much less pigmentation than usually.  all of this combined with the fact that i also went off birth control recently, this toner is a keeper for sure.  it’s also not drying!  at all!

// extras //

aesop resurrection hand balm // this hand cream deserves all the hype around it as well as the hefty price tag ($27).  it sinks into the skin almost immediately, leaving no grease or residue on the hands.  pretty sure this has single handedly saved my dry, overwashed hands this winter.  it is expensive, but absolutely worth it – and not even as or more expensive than some hand creams on the market, if that makes sense.  plus it smells delicious – a beautiful mix of woods and citrus that fades quickly.bbfebpicks3.jpgdedcool fragrance 02 // after wanting to try this dedcool fragrance for at least 6 months now, i finally bit the bullet just after the new year.  and i say this fragrance, because i knew that it was the exact one of the bunch that i would enjoy – mainly because it’s mostly sandalwood.  the inclusion of juniper is so gorgeous and very unique.  i can truly say this fragrance is like nothing i’ve ever tried or smelled before and i am absolutely in love with it.  it sits very close to the skin and settles to a warm, light sandalwood base.  dedcool is very nicely priced for fragrance ($70 for 50ml), nontoxic, vegan, and unisex.  according to the brand, “02 embodies the dark aroma of juniper mixed with green floral and sandalwood. This scent balances femininity with masculinity” and “intermingles rich hues of sandalwood and juniper berries to craft the unflawed musky blend of gender neutrality.”  of all the sandalwood fragrances that i own and love, this is the best of the bunch.  also, i got this at neiman marcus combined with a 15% off coupon they had for signing up for emails!

pura d’or shampoo // as i mentioned, i recently went off birth control, and i think that this caused my hair to start falling out.  now it really wasn’t bad at all and i managed to not panic too much, but i was still worried.  my sister recommended this shampoo and i love it!  not only has it helped the fall out (could also be that my body adjusted to the lack of extra hormones), but i love how it makes my hair feel.  it is sulfate-free and natural (?).  even if it didn’t help protect my hair against breakage and fall out, i would still love and recommend this.bbfebpicks2.jpg// entertainment //

girls season one // i absolutely adored girls when the first season was released.  the rest of the seasons just didn’t do it for me, but the first one is just as hysterical and well-written as ever.  highly recommend rewatching the first season whether you completed the series or not!

matilda on youtube // simple, to the point, and delightfully australian.  i just love her!  i find myself watching and rewatching her videos whenever i’m on youtube – also just having them on as background noise.  she shares my deep love for olio e osso balms, so really i don’t need to say anymore than that!bbfebpicks6.jpgbbfebpicks1.jpg

december & january picks

i didn’t do a december picks in 2017 in favor of my 2017 discoveries post, but there were a lot of products that i got into at the end of the year.  so december and january picks it is!  as everyone else in the world has been saying, january was a ridiculously long and grey month, so i’m looking forward to february and just 28 days.  happy happy, my dear bohemians!

skincare & haircare //

cetaphil moisturizing cream // my winter standby.  it hydrates my skin so intensely and gives me a nice glow.  it’s simple, but extremely effective and reliable.bb decjan picks6.jpgmad hippie cleansing cream // i love mad hippie and this cleanser is no exception.  i purchased this at whole foods while home for christmas and have been using it ever since.  it’s very hydrating but still cleansing, which can be a difficult balance for cleansing creams or more lotion-based cleansers.  if you have dry skin and are looking for an eco cleanser, i think you’ll enjoy this!

jordan samuel hydrate 4 oz. // you all know i love this serum, but i had to mention the new 4 oz size.  i am so pleased that jordan released this super size product.  it’s pricey but actually results in a great amount of savings.  and 1 oz for serum is just too easy to get through.  bb decjan picks5.jpgr&co cactus shampoo // this seems to be my winter hair product of choice.  i have long toted this as giving me my “summer” hair in the winter, and i still stand by that description.  texturizing and thickening, but doesn’t leave the hair sticky or clumpy.  i’m on my second bottle since my original purchase last winter!

makeup //bb decjan picks2.jpgnars radiant creamy concealer in vanilla // while i was loving the sephora full coverage concealer for half of december and half of january, i’m back to my nars creamy.  i don’t know why but this is just my favorite concealer of all time.  i usually stray when i feel like the color is oxidizing on me, but it must depend on what i wear underneath because it’s not doing that right now.  it’s just perfect for blemishes and lasts all day.  i’m sorry i leave you sometimes, my sweet.

bare minerals complexion rescue gel tint in opal // i tried this a really long time ago and hated it, but i wanted to try it out again.  and i love it!  the shade opal is perfect for my winter skin and it gives me the perfect boost of hydration and glow while the tint remains remaining sheer and perfecting on the skin.  i highly recommend this for all “tinted moisturizer is still too much” people like myself.

charlotte tilbury filmstar bronze and glow // this was my birthday splurge and i am so pleased i finally took the plunge.  the bronzer is absolutely perfect in that it’s light enough for my winter skin but can be built up when i have more color.  it sinks into the skin for an undetectable finish.  the highlighter definitely gets less use as i’m not a big highlighter person, but i have been wearing it as an eyeshadow for a bit of something.  i knew going into this purchase that i wouldn’t use the highlighter as much, so it really has been perfect for me.

w3ll people mascara // i know it seems like i’m always on the hunt for my next mascara, and i really am.  i had a sample size of this mascara so when i felt like a change from my maybelline volume blast, i knew this is where i would go.  and i must say i’m extremely impressed.  eco mascaras seem to be a tough category to perfect, but this mascara remains natural looking while lengthening and volumizing the lashes.  not a ton of volume, but really the perfect amount for me.  i’ve even gotten compliments on my lashes while wearing this!  when my sample size runs out i do think i will purchase the full size, which is saying something.bb decjan picks3.jpg  mineral fusion pressed powder in cool 1 // i know i’ve mentioned this somewhere else, but i purchased this after my alima pure pressed foundation smashed to smitherines.  and i love it!  it’s quite pricey but easy to find on sale if you do a little digging.  the powder itself is extremely finely milled so it never looks powdery on the skin at all.  it sets my concealer and t-zone without ever taking away my glow.  highly recommend if you are looking for a clean powder with lighter coverage. bb decjan picks4.jpg clarins instant light lip comfort oil in honey // this is the lip product that has been on my lips for the past 2 months straight.  it looks like a gloss but feels like a balm.  it makes me feel put together while still hydrating and treating my lips.  expensive for sure, but i love it!  the shade honey is essentially clear, but sort of warms up the lips if that makes sense.  the shades are all sheer tints, but they do have some reds and pinks if you are wanting a little bit of color.

shows, coffee, & extras //

lovesick // a great, easy to watch netflix/british series.  i am sooo sad that i’ve watched all the episodes and am not so patiently waiting for another season to be released.  lovesick is super funny and cute, but with a little touch of seriousness and reality.  check it out!

rita // another netflix show that i just happened upon.  rita is danish, but i never mind using subtitles.  this show is quite different from anything else i watch in that it is about a school and all the issues the teachers deal with.  sounds boring but i absolutely adore it.  more serious than lovesick, but not in a bad way at all.bb decjan picks1.jpg devotion by patti smith // my sister got me this book for christmas and it’s actually SIGNED BY PATTI.  i almost died, as i’m sure you can imagine.  i’ve actually already read it twice, the first time within two days of receiving it.  it’s quite different from her other works in that it is separated into three parts: the first about her creation of the story, the second being the story itself, and the third being why she writes.  it’s a beautiful gem and if you love patti you need to read it.  asap.

swell x target coffee thermos // the best thermos i’ve been able to find!  i bring coffee with me to school every day and i found my other thermos was cooling down within a few hours.  this keeps my coffee hot and delicious and, most importantly, is very easy to clean.  they have a ton of colors at target and it’s very reasonably priced compared to swell’s other products and just other coffee thermos that have good reviews.  a necessity, if you ask me!

november picks

oooh november.  what a beautiful month you were.  for as much as i love summer and winter, fall is where i really excel.  i get that fresh start feeling, my mind starts to wander to cozy thoughts, and i feel settled.  this november was particularly special to me; i met a man that really makes me feel, i was home for thanksgiving for the first time in 6 years, and i’ve been stressfully, excitingly busy.  and as far as products go, i feel confident in my routine and how i am presenting myself to the world.  and isn’t that what products and beauty and style are really about?  bb november picks2.jpghaircare //

i use very few products on my hair, but inevitably every winter i find myself needing something to get my lifeless hair back in action.  i’ve been using the klorane dry shampoo and kristen ess dry finish working texturize spray this month and both are simply enough that even i can use.  i’ve been using the dry shampoo on my hair when it’s damp, just spray at the roots of my hair to give a little lift.  somehow this works like a total charm, without making my hair feel immediately dirty or gritty.

the other hair product i’ve been loving is the kristen ess texture spray.   it’s supposedly a great alternative to the oribe dry texturizing spray, but really i got it because it was one of the only texturizing sprays i could find at target that had good reviews.  i like this because it’s easy to build up to your desired finish; it doesn’t get greasy or dirty too quickly either.  i don’t use these products every day, but i have been surprisingly diligent.bb november picks5.jpgbb november picks4.jpgmakeup //

i mentioned on instagram that i got a few alima pure items in a recent credo beauty order, and they have been firm favorites this month.  alima pure is the company that makes my powder foundation and i absolutely love the brand.  from their aesthetic to their mission to the fact that each compact is refillable, they are a solid company to support.

so during this order i picked up the lip tint in honey and the pressed eye shadow in icon.  the lip tint is the perfect lipstick for me.  it applies and hydrates like a balm, but has the coverage of a lipstick and isn’t too shiney.  the color is my dream slightly peachy nude that i can throw on every single day without feeling over the top.  i’m actually contemplating getting another one to keep in my purse.

the shadow i mentioned in my thanksgiving post, but it is a beautiful, very subtle browny silvery taupe.  i like that it is slightly lighter than my other taupes and gives the lids an almost wet glow.  i’m also considering getting another eye shadow in the shade mirage, a shimmering beige.  highly recommend checking alima pure out!bb november picks1.jpgmy other makeup favorite this month is actually a tool.  do you all remember my saga with the bobbi brown bronzer brush?  basically i bought it during the sephora vib sale last year, and it turned out to be an absolutely shedding mess.  i returned, but it has stayed in my mind because it really is the perfect brush for bronzer.

anyway, i’ve been selling some things on poshmark recently, and randomly figured i would see if anyone was selling a new bobbi brush at a discounted price.  well someone was, so for $15, i reinvested in a brand new brush.  well i don’t know if this was is new or old or i just got a complete dud, but it is insanely soft and doesn’t shed in the least.  i’m so pleased with it and can’t believe my luck.  highly recommend this seller if you are interested!bb november picks3.jpgetc. //

i won’t deny it’s been a while since i have read for fun, but over thanksgiving break i went through my bookshelf and picked out a handful of dust by evelyn waugh.  i purchased this book quite a while ago during a library book sale (one of my favorite things ever), but never got around to reading it.  it’s the strangest, very british story of a man who’s wife has an affair and decides to leave him, all in a very matter-of-fact way.  i don’t know why but i completely devoured it.  it feels so good to have finished a book that isn’t education related!  waugh is a very famous british author, so i definitely want to read more of his works.

this month i also watched stranger things, ooobviously.  it’s funny, i watched the first season of the show, but stopped halfway through because i really didn’t like it.  but for whatever reason when the second season came out i became fully obsessed.  i actually went back to finish season one while still watching season 2 and feel like a total weirdo, but it’s sooo good.  i would like to formally apologize for not being into it at first.  if you like thrillers that aren’t too scary, you should go for this.bb november picks6.jpg
