the sephora sale: what i actually bought

my sephora purchases arrived!  i’m so happy with my service this time around, especially compared to my drama in the fall.  these are all first impressions, but honestly these products are pretty epic.  i killed it.  no shame!  also important to note, i had a pretty hefty sephora merch credit from some returns i had made, so that allowed me to be able to buy the last product (and perhaps the most exciting) mentioned here…bb sephora sale1.jpgbb sephora sale2.jpg

rms champagne rose luminizer, $38 // somehow i forgot to include this in my sephora sale wishlist, when it was actually the product i was wanting the most.  though i did enjoy it, i no longer have the rms living luminizer.  it just wasn’t exactly what i wanted in a highlighter and i didn’t find myself reaching for it often enough to to justify keeping it around.  the champagne rose luminizer, on the other hand, is THE perfect thing – it isn’t stark white but rather a creamy pink that looks perfectly subtle and glowy on my fair skin and somewhat tan summer skin in the future.  though this does have a slight pinky reflect, it works perfectly with my pink undertones and the overall color of the product keeps it insanely natural.  this is maybe even glossier than the living luminizer and i super love it.bb sephora sale5.jpgbb sephora sale3.jpgbb sephora sale4.jpghourglass ambient lighting powder in dim light, mini $22 // boring purchase but i wanted this back in my life!  i decided to go with the mini size even though it is kind of a rip off for the price/amount of product vs the full size.  i like my mineral fusion powder, but i always want it both at home and while i’m out and about, so this will be good for that purpose as well.bb sephora sale8.jpgbb sephora sale7.jpgbb sephora sale6.jpgmilk makeup kush mascara, $24 // i’m not really a girl to try out a bunch of different mascaras, and i am still in love with my w3ll people one.  but something about this milk makeup kush mascara just seemed fun?!  i don’t honestly know, i just really wanted to try it, and having a more natural (ingredients-wise) but volumizing mascara seemed like something i would like to have around.  and this mascara is INSANE.  one swipe onto my lashes and they had amazing volume and length and honestly looked fake.  if it doesn’t crumble, it will be exactly what i wanted the too faced better than sex to be like.  the packaging is awesome while a little too big for my taste, but i so appreciate milk’s aesthetic and style.  glad i went out of my comfort zone!bb sephora sale9.jpgmarc jacobs le marc lip creme lipstick in cream and sugar, $30 // this is the exact nude i have been searching for.  it is the perfect balance of pink, peach, and brown while appearing super natural.  at first i was worried it was slightly too light for me, but it’s incredibly flattering given the way that i apply all lipstick – blotted and really blended into the lip.  i’m not 100% sold on this, but i think i’m going to keep it!  editor’s note: i have since returned this…it was just too expensive to justify if i wasn’t completely in love!bb sephora sale10.jpgnails inc nail kale base coat, $15 // this was purely a repurchase.  this is my all time favorite base coat and i have not used anything else since i purchased about 2 years ago.  if you do your nails at home and need something reliable, i very much recommend this product.

now this wasn’t in the sale, but i got it around the same time…bb sephora sale11.jpgbb sephora sale12.jpgmarc jacobs tan-tastic bronzer, $49 // !!!!!!!! it FINALLY came back just a few days ago (i was afraid i missed out forever) and it is just as deliciously dreamy as it appears online.  the perfect balance of warm and cool, this shade and texture is exactly what i look for in a bronzer.  now i bought this from the marc jacobs website, and they offer a 10% discount for first time subscribers, plus free shipping and no tax.  so all in all it cost me $44, which is far cheaper than it would have been even with the sephora vib sale.  so if you are upset you have to pay full price now that the sale is over, fear not!

ok, i’m never shopping for beauty products again.  done!  bye!

the skincare routine

bb nighttime skincare update.jpgthis was originally an instagram post, but i thought it would be better as a quick bonus blog post instead.  so, this is tonight’s skincare routine, as well as what my routine is going to look like for a while thanks to some killer new products (excluding the mask, which is just a once a week treat these days)…

🌿wash: mix of stark skincare aurora cleansing balmglossier milky jelly cleanser // i emulsified the balm in my hands and then added a pump of mjc.  these mix beautifully to offer a moisturizing cleanse that is easily rinsed off with warm water.

🌿mask: milk makeup x urban outfitters urban defense mask // you all know i love this for a quick (3-5 minute) boost.

🌿spray: evan healy lavender hydrosoul // always!

🌿serum: previse nutrify 1-6 hyaluronic acid serum // i ordered this through the beauty heroes shop to replace my deciem hylamide low molecular ha serum – this is thinner in viscosity but feels the same on the skin and is a nice, quite basic serum.

🌿oils: indie lee squalane & stark skincare midnight regenerating // i picked up the indie lee oil this week in california during the anthropologie 20% off sale.  i’ve been researching squalane for a while and was so pumped to actually test this in person.  it’s a lightweight, extremely moisturizing oil that my skin is completely drinking up.  the stark mr is exactly what it says, a nighttime oil that works to repair and nourish the skin.  these work in combination beautifully.

🌿eyes: living libations all seeing eye cream // i’ve been using this for a few weeks now and am really enjoying it.  i haven’t seen immediate effects, but i also wasn’t expecting to.  very hydrating and i like knowing i have a specific product for my eyes now.

please note: this is a lot of skincare, especially for me. but through some extensive research and trial, this is what my skin needs and wants. as far as the stark skincare items – i have completely fallen in love with jess via her youtube channel, and her products are just as amazing as she is.  seriously, i have been getting a full on education about green beauty and skincare (and skincare in general) and just love her.

november picks

you know the drill: new discoveries, rediscoveries…all the stuff i’m digging this month.IMG_4410.jpgIMG_4426.jpg

using >>

too faced hangover primer // i have used this absolutely every day since i purchased it at the very beginning of the month, including days that i haven’t been wearing any makeup.  i love the added moisture it gives to my skin and it really does make my makeup last all day long.  it’s beautiful on it’s own or mixed with something like the mac strobe cream or nars illuminator in hot sand.  the travel size i got at ulta is definitely going to last me for quite a while, even with some frequent use.  this is such a goodie.

milk makeup x urban outfitters urban defense mask // i detailed this mask in this post about milk makeup so i won’t go too much in depth, but basically this mask is awesome.  it goes on as a thick, incredible smelling gel and leave it on for just a few minutes – and then mix in some water, rub it around on your skin, and wash it all off.  it’s cleansing but healing and moisturizing and i love how it feels.  the tub is absolutely huge and will last for quite a while, so for $36 you really get your money’s worth.  check that post for more information (even though really there isn’t much more to tell)!

yu-be moisturizing cream // i’ve had this since early in the year, but quite forgot about it as summer came around.  but i’ve brought it back out for my poor winter face where i have a few extra dry, peeling patches.  i have been putting this around my nose and mouth every morning and night and it keeps dryness at bay and doesn’t burn at all.  the camphor smell is a bit strong (it smells like carmex) but fades away quickly and actually offers a little bit of a pick-me-up.  i don’t know if i would put this all over my face, but considering the high glycerin content i’m thinking about it as the weather gets colder and colder.  in any case, this is a nice bit of extra moisture if you need it.

bronzer // while this is always a favorite, i’ve been having a fun time switching it up with bronzers this month.  i’m rotating between the soap&glory solar powder, benefit hoola, and hourglass luminous bronze light depending on what i’m feeling like and these are all such solid bronzing powders.  super natural on my getting-paler skin and offer the face such a nice lift and glow.  highly recommend all three.

bioderma // i picked up a small bottle of bioderma at the airport while in london and quickly added it to my nightly routine.  i’ve been taking off all my makeup with this before washing my face or doing a mask at night, and i like doing the extra step.  i prefer this to washing my face twice and feel like it gets my face even cleaner than double washing anyways.  it’s extremely gentle and doesn’t burn my dry skin or create any redness as these types of products tend to do on me.  it’s a beautiful makeup remover and a really nice addition to a skincare routine.  and thankfully for us americans, you can now get bioderma via beautylish and violet grey, so i know exactly where to order more when i run out of my bottle!

pf candle co fig and sandalwood candle // my all-time favorite candle and perfect for fall.  it’s warm and smooth, but not overpowering.  i don’t particularly smell fig in here, but i do smell all that delicious sandalwood.  i’m coming to the end of mine so i’ve been burning it night and day to clean out that amber jar like the true blogger i am!  can’t wait to buy another when i get to my next location.  also, i think in a past life i was a sandalwood tree.

monica vinader onyx ring // i couldn’t find the exact one online so i linked something similar.  i got this ring while in london and oh my gosh am i in love with it.  i wear it on my ring finger on my right hand which is a little unusual for me; i’m usually a middle or forefinger ring girl.  the onyx stone is so eye catching and different, and it plays off the gold so well.  it’s a statement but still understated and makes me feel rather grown up indeed.  plus it reminds me of a ring that a dear friend of my parents’ wears, and that makes it all the more special.  IMG_4441.jpgIMG_4414.jpgIMG_4432.jpg

reading >>

rules of civility by amor towles // this book is such a gem!  i happened upon it in my local bookstore and left without it, and then went back the next day because i couldn’t stop thinking about it.  this book is so up my alley – very similar to my beloveds: the lost art of keeping secrets and searching for grace kelley.  there’s just something about vintage new york city, filled with lavish parties, twinkling lights, and smart, sassy young women coming into their own.  katey, the main character, has such a great wit and sense of humor that i can’t help but want to be just like her.  for some reason i couldn’t get patti smith out of my mind the entire time i was reading this, so i must see a little bit of her in the protagonist.  i definitely took my time reading this because i didn’t want it to end.  favorite line: “bred with just the right amount of fresh air, roughhousing, and ignorance, these primitive [midwestern] blondes set out from the cornfields looking like starlight with limbs” (towles 14).

exploring milk makeup

IMG_4382.jpgIMG_4377.jpgi cannot resist milk makeup.  i just think it’s so cool and innovative, and i love their message of makeup for all people of all styles, not just girly girls or whatever.  i have gotten all of these products from urban outfitters online (not all at once!) but they also are available at sephora and birchbox.  i like ordering from urban because it’s so fast and they have some pretty cool collaboration products as well.

for lips, i love the lip pigment swear by peachy nude and lip color in c.r.e.a.m. rosey nude, which i’ve discussed over here, so i won’t go on and on.  they are the perfect matte lip products and the textures of each are different but great.  the lip salve rosé is an urban outfitters exclusive product and it is awesome!  it’s a lip balm but offers a bit of a holographic sheen, so i love wearing this during the day and at night.  it’s moisturizing and all that, but with a little something that your every day lip balm doesn’t have.

for the face, i have only tried the matte bronzer baked but it’s a gorgeous cream bronzer.  again, i mentioned this over here, so i won’t go too in depth, but it’s the perfect bronzer shade, kinda warm but not too much.  it is a cream to powder formula and features milk melt technology, meaning it melts into your skin immediately on contact.  i especially love this bronzer in the summer time, but i know i’ll still be able to use it in the winter, which is impressive cause i get pretty pale.

for skincare, the urban defense mask is my newest purchase.  it’s another urban outfitters exclusive, and it’s a gel mask that washes away into a lotion.  it’s both moisturizing and skin clearing, and is extremely gentle.  you leave it on for 3-5 minutes and then mix with water, rubbing it in sort of as a lotion and washing off the rest.  it comes in a huge tub and you don’t need much at all, so this $36 is going to go a looong way!

do you have any other milk makeup recommendations for me?

// my images, please credit if taking.

the real real pt.3

part three: the lips. all matte, all the time.IMG_4402.jpgIMG_4405 (2).jpgwhen i just need a little moisture, i have to use the weleda lip balm.  it’s my absolute favorite lip balm as it’s unscented and unflavored, clear, slightly matte, and on the waxy side.  it sinks in quickly but also coats the lips, so it’s not like it completely disappears a few minutes after you apply it.  i have handful of these in different pockets and purses, so it’s always exciting when i come across one!

if i’m feeling something nude, i either use the milk makeup lip color in c.r.e.a.m. or the milk makeup lip pigment in swear by.  c.r.e.a.m. is a beautiful rosey-nude shade that is extremely similar to my natural lip color but with a little more oomph.  i blot this on and it lasts for quite some time, while fading very evenly and naturally.  swear by is more peachy-nude, which i don’t usually like, but this shade seems to be an exception.  plus i like that i can just blot it in with my finger.  the texture is sooo cool, almost marshmallow-y, and turns into a powder almost immediately so it’s super matte but not super drying.

if i want something a little darker and a little more grungy (when do i not?!), nars velvet matte lip pencil in bahama is my go to.  it’s a pinky brown that looks so good, again, blotted on and i even like mixing it with the c.r.e.a.m.  it’s dark but not too dark by any means, and somehow it is similar to my lip color again, so it’s super natural but with a little extra.  these matte pencils are my all time favorite lip formula and i have a ton, but this one leads the pack.

so now that you know what’s usually on my face, tell me what’s on yours?! my images, please credit if taking.

mfam: cream bronzer edition

IMG_4300.jpgi would say that bronzer is my all time favorite beauty product (category?).  it just makes me feel more alive and awake, and just a light dusting does the trick.  lately, however, i’ve really gotten into cream bronzers, as they add color and dew to the skin, and just add to that healthy effect.  i started off with the tata harper very bronzing, but quickly moved onto the milk and nars stick formulas.IMG_4291.jpgIMG_4288.jpg

tata harper very bronzing // this is the most contour-y of the bunch, but also the most natural.  it’s a matte, medium cream that has relatively neutral undertones.  the pot container makes it a bit of a pain to apply, but i find it best to blend out with fingers instead of a brush.  this has the most sheer application, which is great for a very subtle bronze or contour.

nars matte multiple in altai  // i had been wanting this one for a while, but i believe the matte multiples are currently being reformulated (they are set to return in the new year).  i finally caved and bought one on amazon ($14, linked above), which might be questionable but it smells fine and applies amazing!  altai is a light, warm toned matte bronzer, which is quite opaque but sheers out upon blending (i use an elf blush brush).  you can apply these wet or dry, with wet application offering a sheerer finish, so i am looking forward to testing out that method as well.  this dries down to a powder finish.

milk makeup matte bronzer in baked // this is a pretty standard bronzer shade, on the medium/dark side, featuring an orangey warm undertone.  this has the same opacity as the nars bronzer, but is also a bit more glowy as it remains creamy.  i find it takes a little bit more to blend out than the other two.  i love the size of the product as you don’t have it to apply as much to get the whole area you want to bronze.  this is my newest cream bronzer purchase so i’m still testing it out, but so far this is a great contender.  i will say, however, this is such a bitch to get off!!!!!!

overall, i would say that the nars matte multiple in altai is my favorite of these three cream bronzer options.  it is the one i reach for the most as my summer tan fades away, and i just like the way it looks on my skin.  i think i will also get a lot of use out of the milk makeup bronzer, especially because of the amount of product you get.  the tata harper is my least used due to the hassle of application, but i love the light touch of color it gives.
