november picks

oooh november.¬† what a beautiful month you were.¬†¬†for as much as i love summer and winter, fall is where i really excel.¬† i get that fresh start feeling, my mind starts to wander to cozy thoughts, and i feel settled.¬† this november was particularly special to me; i met a man that really makes me feel, i was home for thanksgiving for the first time in 6 years, and i’ve been stressfully, excitingly busy.¬† and as far as products go, i feel confident in my routine and how i am presenting myself to the world.¬† and isn’t that what products and beauty and style are really about?¬†¬†bb november picks2.jpghaircare //¬†

i use very few products on my hair, but inevitably every winter i find myself needing something to get my lifeless hair back in action.¬† i’ve been using the klorane dry shampoo and kristen ess dry finish working texturize spray this month and both are simply enough that even i can use.¬† i’ve been using the dry shampoo on my hair when it’s damp, just spray at the roots of my hair to give a little lift.¬† somehow this works like a total charm, without making my hair feel immediately dirty or gritty.

the other hair product i’ve been loving is the kristen ess texture spray.¬† ¬†it’s supposedly a great alternative to the oribe dry texturizing spray, but really i got it because it was one of the only texturizing sprays i could find at target that had good reviews.¬† i like this because it’s easy to build up to your desired finish; it doesn’t get greasy or dirty too quickly either.¬† i don’t use these products every day, but i have been surprisingly diligent.bb november picks5.jpgbb november picks4.jpgmakeup //¬†

i mentioned on instagram that i got a few alima pure items in a recent credo beauty order, and they have been firm favorites this month.  alima pure is the company that makes my powder foundation and i absolutely love the brand.  from their aesthetic to their mission to the fact that each compact is refillable, they are a solid company to support.

so during this order i picked up the lip tint in honey and the pressed eye shadow in icon.¬† the lip tint is the perfect lipstick for me.¬† it applies and hydrates like a balm, but has the coverage of a lipstick and isn’t too shiney.¬† the color is my dream slightly peachy nude that i can throw on every single day without feeling over the top.¬† i’m actually contemplating getting another one to keep in my purse.

the shadow i mentioned in my thanksgiving post, but it is a beautiful, very subtle browny silvery taupe.¬† i like that it is slightly lighter than my other taupes and gives the lids an almost wet glow.¬† i’m also considering getting another eye shadow in the shade mirage, a shimmering beige.¬† highly recommend checking alima pure out!bb november picks1.jpgmy other makeup favorite this month is actually a tool.¬† do you all remember my saga with the bobbi brown bronzer brush?¬† basically i bought it during the sephora vib sale last year, and it turned out to be an absolutely shedding mess.¬† i returned, but it has stayed in my mind because it really is the perfect brush for bronzer.

anyway, i’ve been selling some things on poshmark recently, and randomly figured i would see if anyone was selling a new bobbi brush at a discounted price.¬† well someone was, so for $15, i reinvested in a brand new brush.¬† well i don’t know if this was is new or old or i just got a complete dud, but it is insanely soft and doesn’t shed in the least.¬† i’m so pleased with it and can’t believe my luck.¬† highly recommend this seller if you are interested!bb november picks3.jpgetc. //¬†

i won’t deny it’s been a while since i have read for fun, but over thanksgiving break i went through my bookshelf and picked out a handful of dust by evelyn waugh.¬† i purchased this book quite a while ago during a library book sale (one of my favorite things ever), but never got around to reading it.¬† it’s the strangest, very british story of a man who’s wife has an affair and decides to leave him, all in a very matter-of-fact way.¬† i don’t know why but i completely devoured it.¬† it feels so good to have finished a book that isn’t education related!¬† waugh is a very famous british author, so i definitely want to read more of his works.

this month i also watched stranger things, ooobviously.¬† it’s funny, i watched the first season of the show, but stopped halfway through because i really didn’t like it.¬† but for whatever reason when the second season came out i became fully obsessed.¬† i actually went back to finish season one while still watching season 2 and feel like a total weirdo, but it’s sooo good.¬† i would like to formally apologize for not being into it at first.¬† if you like thrillers that aren’t too scary, you should go for this.bb november picks6.jpg

august picks

oh august, the sunday of summer…bb august pics1elizabeth arden 8 hour cream // something you may not know about me is that i interned at elizabeth arden when i was in college. ¬†i can honestly say it’s where my love of beauty came from, and i look back on that experience fondly (for the most part). ¬†i haven’t used 8 hour cream since then, but i couldn’t resist this cutie cute special edition tube that i saw at macy’s. ¬†the smell is sooooo nostalgic to me and this is such a nice all around product. ¬†i’ve been wearing it on my lips, on my eyelids, on my cheekbones, a little bit in my brows, on cuts and scrapes…it truly is a miracle product.

herbacin kamille hand cream // to be quite honest, i randomly grabbed this while at the grocery store and in need of hand lotion. ¬†it’s a nice jelly type formula that sinks into the skin incredibly fast and leaves almost a matte finish on the hands. ¬†sounds weird, but it is very beneficial when talking about hand lotion. ¬†the smell is honestly groooooss, it smells like public restroom soap, but i make it work cause this lotion is pretty dope.

pixi glow tonic // i have previously used the pixi glow tonic pads, but i am having much more success with the actual tonic. ¬†it’s probably because i am using it regularly every night, but whatever the reason i am loving this product the second time around. ¬†the actual bottle allows me to use just a little bit and is lasting me a very long time. ¬†this is the perfect gentle exfoliant for sensitive and dry skin and i can tell that my skin is more even toned and perfected than usual.

real techniques deluxe crease brush // i’ve had this brush for a very long time and have only recently found a use for it. ¬†i don’t know what made me use it for concealer, but i did and it is the perfect brush for patting in concealer on blemishes. ¬†it doesn’t mess with the coverage of the concealer or make it look cakey, it just speeds up the process of patting concealer in. bb august picks2sephora bright future gel serum concealer in parfait // i recently mentioned this concealer in this post and also mentioned it all last summer. ¬†this is my go to summer concealer because of the extensive shade range and the creamy, hydrating formula. ¬†it has great coverage for blemishes and is so hydrating that i’m sure it would be great under the eyes as well. ¬†even around the face i find it blends into my skin beautifully without looking cakey or overdone. ¬†also they changed the applicator – it was previously a weird, hard oval (i don’t even know what this means but it sounds bad) that you couldn’t swipe across the skin – to a slanted doe foot that is very easy to use.

wet-n-wild eye shadow in nutty // a few months ago, i read about this eye shadow here and then went on a hunt to find it, only to realize that it is impossible to find and i could only get it on ebay (except now it is apparently available at walgreens.com?!?!?!?!). ¬†i forgot about the shadow and went on my way, as you do. ¬†then this month, while visiting my parents on an extremely small island with a little pharmacy that hardly ever gets good makeup, i found two of them, just sitting there, waiting for me. ¬†this shadow is absolutely gorgeous, so pigmented as wet-n-wild shadows always are, and the perfect cool-toned but warm-toned browny taupe. ¬†it’s .99 cents so honestly if you can find it, buy the lot.

neutrogena nourishing eye liner in spiced chocolate // i hardly ever wear eyeliner, but my makeup look for august has been clean, dewey skin with a thin line of warm shimmery brown eyeliner and curled lashes.  this eyeliner from neutrogena is the perfect slightly shimmery warm brown that blends easily but stays put all day.  the formula of this eyeliner is quite ideal, and i really like how small the nib of the product is.  if you are looking for a liner that is similar to mac teddy (at least in my mind this is), i recommend neutrogena spiced chocolate.
bb august picks3collecting magazine inspiration // i have a looooooooot of old magazines at my parents’ house. ¬†well not anymore because i’ve recycled them all, but before i did that i went through every single one and ripped out the pages that inspired me the most. ¬†i’m not sure what i am going to do with them – i’m considering doing a collage wall in my bedroom and i just recovered my planner with some favorite images – but honestly i’m just enjoying perusing them. ¬†it’s almost like my very own magazine filled with every single item that i actually want to see. ¬†i don’t buy magazines as frequently anymore, so i’m loving going through the pages and seeing them as if they are new.

target notebook with sharpie pens and le pens // i got this notebook for about $3 at target at the beginning of the summer and it has become my constant companion!  from lists to doodles to schedules, pretty much every detail of my summer is present here.  sharpie pens and le pens are my absolute favorites for clear writing and working on fun lettering.

full coverage podcast // as you know i have been absolutely loving harriet hadfield of harry makes it up this summer, so it was only a matter of time before i started listening to her podcast. ¬†she and her cohost, lindsey kelk, are absolutely adorable and such a pleasure to listen to. ¬†each episode is, of course, about beauty and skincare but with a specific theme and the occasional special guest. ¬†it’s relaxing but also stimulating to listen to, so i’ve been playing it while cleaning the house or driving long distances. ¬†i think i’m a podcast convert now.

blogs & youtube //

alice catherine // i’ve been following alice on instagram for a while and randomly decided to check out her blog. ¬†you know when you know someone has a blog but never seem to look at it?! ¬†anyways, i love her style and aesthetic. ¬†plus it’s always refreshing to find a new style blogger that is down to earth and approachable fashion-wise!¬†

stylonylon // i’ve been following and reading stylonylon for months but keep forgetting to mention her here. ¬†her blog is beachy but sophisticated, french but british, stylish but serene. ¬†in a few words: i love her. ¬†her sunday edit posts are my absolute favorite and i haven’t missed one in months.

harry makes it up // harry is an incredible makeup artist that also has an addicting youtube channel.  i watched her back in the day but recently fell back in love.  her approach to makeup is very simple and fresh, right up my alley.  some of her recent videos that i have loved are her priscilla presley tutorial and everyday makeup routine.

sharon farrell // another makeup artist and youtuber!  i found sharon through karima mckimmie and she is such a gem.  she is an irish woman living in australia which makes for the perfect combination.  her videos range from reviews to vlogs to tutorials that are more interesting than my usual youtube choices.  both sharon and harry exude knowledge and experience which i personally enjoy very much.bb july picks2.jpgproducts //

essence make me brow in browny brows // glossier boy brow has nothing on this. ¬†$3 for the perfect brow gel – it’s plumping, perfectly ashy toned, and long wearing. ¬†i have to wipe a bit off the applicator before applying but this is truly a diamond in the rough.

glossier super pure // i have previously mentioned my disappointment in the glossier serum range so i really didn’t think i would ever reach for them again. ¬†for whatever reason, i decided to try super pure again while i’ve been struggling with some hormonal and stress induced chin acne. ¬†somehow this is now working for me! ¬†it’s not a miracle product, but i feel that it takes away a lot of the redness and irritation from my breakouts and seems to take away a few days from the timeline.

bite beauty gloss in rambutan // i wanted to pick up one of the bite beauty glosses from sephora for a while but never ended up doing so, only to find out they had discontinued the line.  why does bite do that, by the way?  anyways i placed a sephora order a few months ago for some staples and saw that these were available again!  i picked up the nude shade and it is seriously the perfect gloss.  i go in and out with lip gloss, but sometimes i just want that fresh look that only a gloss can achieve.  they are glossy but not sticky and surprisingly hydrating.  this shade is pigmented but not too pigmented, so my lips show a little of the color but are not concealer-like.  if you have been interested in these, go grab one before they disappear again!

coverfx custom enhancer drops in sunkissed // i feel like i’ve mentioned these every where but i don’t know if i actually have. ¬†the most perfect bronzer drops ever. ¬†seriously, the shade is the perfect red-based neutral bronze, they are completely matte, and they apply perfectly both straight on the skin and mixed with foundation or tinted moisturizer. ¬†they are pricey, but just a dot will do you and the quality is remarkable. ¬†i have a more in depth post coming!

ilia sheer vivid tinted moisturizer in t2 belle marre // this has been my go to summer base when i need a little coverage and a little glow. ¬†i find it to be a mix between the nars pure radiant tinted moisturizer and glossier perfecting skin tint. ¬†while i love love the nars tinted moisturizer the ingredients are just too bad for me to justify, and i recently ran out of my glossier tint. ¬†the ilia tinted moisturizer is a truly beautiful, lightweight, glowing formula that adds the perfectly amount of luminosity and coverage to the skin. ¬†the shade t2 is great for me for summer and i have even mixed in a drop of the coverfx drops if i’ve been in the sun for a while. ¬†added bonus of physical spf 20. ¬†i will probably get the t1 shade when winter comes around!

rms nail polish in beloved // ok now this i know i’ve mentioned a million and one times. like here¬†and¬†here.¬†truly the perfect summer red with a hint of orange but not too much.

tata harper resurfacing mask sample // i’ve had this sample forever but fell in love and finished it up over the month of july. ¬†again, my skin has been less than fab so this is both helping my breakouts and adding a glow to the rest of my face. ¬†i don’t know if i can justify the full size, but i really do love this mask. ¬†using it once a week for the month of july i have absolutely seen a difference in the glow and texture of my skin.

diptyque candle in santal // my beautiful christmas present from my beautiful sister! ¬†i’ve been loving this all year long, but especially for adding a sultry scent to my little apartment. ¬†i will be very VERY sad when this is gone…especially because it doesn’t even need to be lit to exude the perfect sandalwood scent. ¬†but you know i’m excited to reuse the container ūüėČ

first aid beauty ultra repair cream //¬†since first trying this over the summer, i seem to always have a tube lying around. ¬†it’s a great moisturizer for dry skin – face, hands, or body – and though i originally tried it as a hand moisturizer, it is intended for the face. ¬†i think it’s a little too heavy for people with combination or oily skin, but this has been my face lotion of choice for the winter and spring. ¬†a great staple and pretty inexpensive. ¬†i’m considering picking up their regular facial moisturizer for summer, so if anyone has any experience with it, let me know!

first aid beauty slow glow gradual self-tanning moisturizer // i am sooo not a fake tanning kind of person. ¬†i admit¬†i dabbled a little during high school – the occasional spray tan or tanning bed for dances (i could kill my younger self) and jergen’s natural glow – but in the last 6-7 years? ¬†absolutely not. ¬†i get pretty good color during the summer with plenty of sunscreen,¬†but during the rest of the year i accept my paleness. ¬†but with the cold weather and constant rain that chicago has been experiencing the past 2 months, i was forced to help out my poor winter skin. ¬†i picked this up at ulta towards the end of april because i love first aid beauty and have been using it one or two nights in a row every two weeks or so or whenever i remember, and it works a charm! ¬†it adds the healthiest glow to my skin without looking fake or over the top. ¬†it doesn’t apply as streakily as other products with careful application and i only find it smells like sunless tanner the tiniest bit – i admit i kind of love it! ¬†you can apply this to your face but i stop before my neck and just add a little extra bronzer the next day.

sheet masks // mentioned here, i’ve been really enjoying using different sheet masks this month. ¬†they kind of freak me out so it took some getting used to, but the effects are kind of ridiculous. ¬†i don’t always see immediate effects from masks that i use, but with these i do. ¬†i tried both of the saturday skin ones, but am much more impressed with¬†the ones i can find at ulta. ¬†leaders is the brand i have been using the most. ¬†they are quite expensive because they are one-use only, but worth it i think!

rimmel santa rose blush // mentioned here, i picked this blush up while at heathrow airport in february. ¬†i think i had heard estee lalonde talk about it at some point, but i can’t honestly remember why i was drawn to it. ¬†it’s a gorgeous light peachy pink with a fine shimmer running through. ¬†it perks up the face nicely but doesn’t look like blush. ¬†hard to explain but it is stunning. ¬†i love it for days when i’m wearing no other makeup. ¬†like i said it is a british product, but you can order it through feel unique if you are interested!

sephora vib purchases // you probably read my round up here – but i am absolutely loving all the products i got during the sephora vib sale. ¬†what are the chances of loving every single thing?! ¬†from the cleanser to the moisturizer, i feel like my skin is better than i ever. ¬†i was considering returning the tata harper illuminating moisturizer because of the insanely high price, but it is such a stunning product i couldn’t let it go. ¬†great purchases all around – i’m pretty proud of myself.

beautycounter citrus mimosa hand cream //¬†a friend gave this to me because she didn’t like it. ¬†i put it aside for almost a year, and then for whatever reason i put it on my nightstand at the end of april. ¬†it’s incredible! ¬†one of the best hand creams i’ve tried.¬† truth be told i don’t love the scent, though it dissipates pretty quickly.¬† unfortunately it is the only scent offered and this is a pretty pricey hand cream ($17), so i’m not sure if i will get around to repurchasing it, but i do love it in the meantime.¬†bb may picks3.jpgmusic, movies, youtube, books ~~

harry styles album // harry is absolutely my dream man, so i knew i was going to love his first solo album. but honestly i am even more taken with it than i expected. ¬†the depth and artistry behind each track is palpable, especially in contrast to what his former band mates are releasing. very eagles, very rock-n-roll. it’s a stunning album all around.

jamestown revival // what took me so long to listen to jamestown revival?  i am a huge folk music fan, so these guys are right up my alley.  they remind me a lot of my favorite gregory alan isakov, but with more upbeat tracks.  my spotify is a very happy place right now!

karima mckimmie // i watched a few of karima’s videos years ago, but never gave her my full attention. ¬†so you might guess that lately, she’s been getting my full attention! ¬†her videos are amazing and her videos are emblematic of the reason i fell in love with youtube beauty videos. ¬†all makeup, none of the changes that other of my favorites seem to be going through.

lauren pence // another youtube fave! ¬†i found her while searching for more eco product-using youtubers. ¬†honestly she sometimes bugs me a little bit – she’s an¬†actress so can get pretty theatrical – but i love her content and her reviews are impeccable.

m train¬†by patti smith // you might remember that i first read m train last summer and loved it. ¬†i decided to give it another go – i much prefer to reread favorite books than search for new ones – and i think i might love it even more this time around. ¬†i feel like i am inside of patti smith’s soul and i feel every single thought she records. ¬†i highly recommend m train, as well as patti’s other works.

desert solitaire by edward abbey // a good friend of mine is a huge edward abbey fan, so i thought i would pick up desert solitaire after hearing such rave reviews. ¬†abbey might not be to everyone’s taste – he is a bit of a john muir type – but right up my alley. ¬†it is incredible to read his experiences in the west when it was¬†still that cowboy land but changing to the tourist attraction we know it to be today. ¬†his words shake me to my core and i wish i could go back to the 60s to help him stop the destruction of our wonderful national parks.

lovesong // i stumbled upon this movie while perusing the newly added section on netflix. ¬†i’m not really sure why i was drawn to it, but i was, and it was the first new movie i’ve watched all the way through in a long time. ¬†it was full of sorrow, but so beautiful and strangely comforting. ¬†it felt like a short story – you don’t have all the details but you don’t need to. ¬†riley keough was so quiet yet so captivating – i felt like i could feel her soul. ¬†i didn’t know that she is lisa marie presley’s daughter and elvis and priscilla’s granddaughter, but now that i know it makes perfect sense as she is practically identical to her mother and grandmother (pre-plastic surgery of course). ¬†it’s a sad film to be sure, but it was beautiful. ¬†oh and i’ve had a crush on ryan eggold since his 90210 days, so there’s that too.lovesong-movie-trailer-images-pics-stills-riley-keough-jena-malone-4.pngand the most important favorite…

baby margot! // my beautiful niece entered the world on may 14, mother’s day! ¬†i was there about 12 hours later to meet this little babe and fell in love. ¬†what is it about babies? ¬†i am so thrilled for my sister and brother-in-law. ¬†and for me! ¬†i’m an aunt! ¬†i can’t wait to watch margot grow and learn and become the incredible little lady that i know she will be.bb may picks2.jpg. . .¬†

april picks

oh april, you were a hell of a month. ¬†here’s to longer days, brighter skies, and sunnier dispositions!bb april picks1.jpgproducts & brands //

too faced chocolate soleil matte bronzer // so you may or may not remember that i recently got rid of a bunch of my bronzers, including benefit hoola in favor of my w3ll people bio bronzer. ¬†i think i even said it was the only bronzer i ever needed, so obviously i jinxed myself. ¬†anyways, soon after that, i found myself missing hoola in the worst way. ¬†the color, the formula, the ease…all things that the bio bronzer just doesn’t have, though i still love it, don’t get me wrong! ¬†i knew i didn’t want to go back to hoola because of the shit ingredients it contains (all the parabens, like really?!), so i went to ulta one day in search of a dupe. ¬†actually the first one i swatched next to hoola was the too faced chocolate soleil matte bronzer and it is spot on! ¬†seriously, they are identical. ¬†you would think¬†the milk chocolate shade would be better for my fair skin, but i find that i can handle medium toned bronzers (with a light hand) because the tones are usually a touch more cool or red. ¬†oh and the too faced, while not completely clean by any means, has far better ingredients and i don’t feel afraid to put it on my face. ¬†the pigmentation is insane and i know it’s going to last me a very long time, plus the packaging is lightyears better than that stupid benefit box.

bare minerals // bare minerals is a brand that has always been quite special to me. ¬†i’ve mentioned it many times, but it was the first makeup that i really ever wore, and have continued to do so for the past 8 years. ¬†i mentioned my discovery of their concealer here, but i recently went back to an old favorite – the flawless definition mascara. ¬†this is the first high end mascara that i ever bought, and i wore it all throughout high school and college. ¬†i strayed as i started to get more and more into makeup, but having struggled to find a good mascara over the last couple years, i finally decided to go back to this. ¬†it is truly the best. ¬†it lengthens and volumizes, making¬†my lashes look super defined and perky. ¬†it’s also hypoallergenic and ingredient-conscious, so it ticks even more boxes for me. ¬†i’m soooo happy to have this back in my life and kicking myself for wasting time, money, and energy looking for something better. ¬†bb april picks3.jpgtarget bronzer brush // i have been on the hunt for a kabuki-style bronzer brush for a weirdly long time. ¬†i just haven’t been loving my usual bronzer brushes – i rotate between the sephora large powder brush, the real techniques powder brush, and the mac 187 – but also didn’t want one of those super insanely dense bronzer brushes that feel like they are moving your face skin. ¬†and then the other day i was at target doing some shopping for my new apartment (!!!!!!!!!!!), and i walked by this long-handled kabuki bronzer brush. ¬†it was love at first sight, both because of the handle and because i could tell it was dense but not too dense.¬† and it’s the perfect brush. ¬†bronzer or blush, this applies the perfect amount and blends out the powder seamlessly, while requiring a very small amount of product. ¬†it’s the perfect density¬†and extremely soft, plus no shedding as of yet. ¬†i love using the side of it for more precise application and then the full brush head¬†for gently blending out. ¬†i do think there’s a bit of a learning curve because of the tightly packed bristles, even though it’s not too dense you still want to be rather gentle if that makes sense. ¬†if you’re in a similar predicament, i definitely recommend this guy, all for $7.99.bb april picks5.jpgmarc jacobs brow wow eyebrow pencil in medium brown¬†// i am the laziest when it comes to my eyebrows. ¬†i buy products with big ideas about fixing these babies up, but i just can’t be bothered and i don’t ever want to look like my eyebrows are “done.” ¬†i will say that i have pretty full brows, but i have some patches that i would like to be a little more full. ¬†sam of samathome518 was gushing over the marc jacobs eyebrow pencil a few months back, so i promptly went to sephora to test it out. ¬†i love this because the color is the perfect ashy brown, no red in sight, and it is not overly pigmented in a good way, so that my brows never look obviously filled in or have brush strokes or anything like that. ¬†i’m really pleased with it and i actually find myself reaching for it most days, which is a real testament to its subtleties! ¬†i do a couple strokes in the front and i’m good to go.

colourpop // i won’t go into much detail here because you will most likely have read this post, but i have been loving my colourpop goodies this month. ¬†i definitely got more basics than anything, but their products are unique and fun and so ridiculously affordable. ¬†such a fun way to get some things you wouldn’t normally splurge on for less than a drugstore eyeshadow or blush. ¬†on that note, why is drugstore makeup so insanely expensive these days? ¬†i find it truly shocking.bb april picks6.jpgcleansing with cleansing oil¬†// i have recently gotten into¬†using oil cleanser to wash my face and i am never going back. ¬†i had a sample size of the little barn apothecary blue yarrow and geranium cleansing oil¬†and have been making my way through it over the month. ¬†my skin did go through a purging process, mostly little bumps around my chin, but nothing too bad or noteworthy (this is normal for the switch over to oil cleansing). ¬†my skin feels more moisturized and supple and i think this is dry skin people’s secret weapon! ¬†i don’t think i will repurchase this particular oil cleanser, but it has been a nice entry product. ¬†i picked up the biossance squalane and antioxidant cleansing oil during the sephora vib sale so i will keep you posted on how that goes.

desert essence whitening plus mouthwash with tea tree oil // for as much as i am on this natural product journey, i will be honest in that i don’t see myself switching my toothpaste anytime soon. ¬†it has kept me in good shape my whole life, so i don’t want to mess with that! ¬†but i have struggled with a good whitening product over the years. ¬†i don’t know if i have sensitive teeth necessarily, but i find things like white strips to be too harsh (and honestly they kind of scare me). ¬†i have enjoyed the colgate whitening mouthwash for a few years, but that too leaves me feeling sensitive. ¬†mercedes of l’amour et la musique has spoken about the desert essence whitening mouthwash over the years, so i thought i would check it out. ¬†and actually this has been a favorite over the past few months, because i just started my second container! ¬†it’s so gentle, fresh, and refreshing, and i actually look forward to using it. ¬†my smile is brighter, my teeth feel cleaner, and my mind is at ease.bb april picks4.jpgnails inc nailkale base coat // i mentioned this in my nail polish roundup, but i had yet to try it at that point. ¬†i’ve since used it 3 times and i can honestly say it’s so much better than opi nail¬†envy. ¬†i’m wearing it alone right now for a bit of shine but it’s also a perfect base coat under nail polish. ¬†my nails feel extremely strong and my nail polish is lasting pretty well.

people //

katie jane hughes // where have i been when it comes to kjh? ¬†her instagram, her youtube videos, her work – she is an incredible makeup artist that is fully responsible for the glossy eye trend. ¬† tamira jarrel mentioned her in her most recent video, and i immediately hopped on instagram and then sat scrolling through her looks for an hour. ¬†she’s just so cool and her looks are funky and refreshing, but also wearable in some way. ¬†highly recommend checking her out for some fresh, unique inspiration.katiejanehughes instagram.pngjenn rogers // i’ve been following jenn on youtube for a while now, and she is such a breath of fresh air in the craziness that is the youtube community. ¬†i love her morning chats – in which she sits down, gets ready for her day, and shares things going on or interesting or thought-provoking – but this month it was her 10 for 10 challenge that got me hooked. ¬†pretty self explanatory, she chose 10 items to create 10 outfits for 10 days, but i loved hearing her thoughts behind the pieces and what she realized about them throughout the challenge. ¬†a nice push to do some spring cleaning, as well.

etc. //

shetland // i’m always on the hunt for a new show. ¬†people recommend them to me all the time, but i usually am not interested in whatever mainstream sagas are popular – pretty little liars excluded. ¬†i found shetland while perusing netflix, it’s a bbc murder mystery so basically i don’t need to say anything more, do i? ¬†but in all honesty it’s a fabulous show – the perfect balance of creepy and gripping, with a little humor thrown in at the perfect moments. ¬†the seasons are short, but they vary greatly in story lines and even the way the episodes are set up. ¬†most of the stories are drawn out over 2 episodes, with the last season being 6 episodes of the same storyline.¬† plus shetland reminds me so much of my beloved nantucket, both the good and the bad to be honest. ¬†i watched all the episodes in a matter of days but i’m definitely going to look out for the fourth season and rewatch the ones on netflix. ¬†creature of habit, ok?

apartment shopping // i’ve mentioned my news here and there, but at the beginning of june i will officially begin¬†graduate school to get my teaching degree. ¬†and, very excitingly, i’m going to have my own place fiiiiinally. ¬†it’s this lovely little nest with white walls and lots of light, so you can imagine how thrilled i am. ¬†mom and i have been making a ton of target, world market, and homegoods trips picking up all the necessities, plus some furniture shopping here and there. ¬†my dad got me a sofa in this amazing army green (favorite color) and i am over the moon excited. ¬†it’s so fun to actually put all my ideas to work, and to imagine what my very own little home is going to look like. ¬†you will be seeing many a photo, prepare yourselves. ¬†pictured above are a soap/trinket dish and toothbrush holder from world market. ¬†bb april picks2.jpg

april picks

monthly picks: march

bb march picks 3.jpggetting into a good skincare routine // i already posted about my skincare routine here, if you want to read more. ¬†some¬†standouts have been the previse hyaluronic acid and indie lee squalane oil – both incredibly hydrators. ¬†i have to say i don’t like the previse quite as much as the hylamide ha i was using, but it’s a close second. ¬†and the indie lee oil is beautiful – so lightweight and quick to sink in. ¬†i love applying these one after the other or mixed together if i’m in a hurry, morning and night. ¬†i’ve also been loving the living libations all seeing eye cream, which smells amazing and is a great basic under-eye moisturizer. ¬†i haven’t seen any drastic changes but i like using it and i think it’s a nice product.

weleda¬†pomegranate regenerating hand cream // you all know i love weleda’s lotions and potions, and this is no different. ¬†it’s a luscious lotion that is quick to absorb and hydrate my poor dry hands. ¬†i actually have started doing something that my dad does – which is apply hand lotion immediately after washing my hands and then wiping off the excess with a towel. ¬†it has made a drastic change in my hands – they are so much softer and more moisturized from my constant application, as well as using lotion when my hands¬†are still slightly damp.bb march picks 4.jpgrms swift shadow in tt-73 // again, i mentioned this in my california travel post, but it is officially my favorite eye shadow ever. ¬†i have been wearing it almost every day, with other makeup or without. ¬†it is the perfect brown, slightly shimmery and glowy shadow¬†that is subtle but keeps me looking grungy and slightly undone.

drinking water // this month i have really started to focus on my body. ¬†i’m exercising regularly and drinking a ton of water. ¬†i read that we should be drinking half of our body weight in ounces (100 pounds = 50 ounces per day) and i have been attempting to stick to that ratio. ¬†some days are harder than others, and frankly sometimes i just can’t be bothered with how often this much water makes me go to the bathroom, but for the most part i have been really good about it. ¬†i feel more energized, i think my skin looks better, and i like knowing i’m doing what’s good for my body. ¬†it’s the only one i have, you know?

going more natural // speaking of having one body, you may have noticed that over the past few months i’ve started transitioning into more natural beauty, skincare, haircare, and body care products. ¬†like i mentioned here and even above, my body and taking care of myself is becoming more and more important to me. ¬†using natural products is certainly not going to make or break me – if i’m going to get sick, i’m going to get sick, you know? – but it makes me feel so much better to be doing even this little bit of extra work to stay healthy. ¬†my father has had cancer almost my whole life and is very stubborn about going to the doctor, eating foods that are good for him, and even drinking water. ¬†he is truly a medical miracle since none of this seems to affect him too much, but for me it is comforting to know that i am doing what i can, almost for him in a way. ¬†i know that green tea and kale and avoiding parabens are great little ways to protect ourselves a little bit more against cancer and other illnesses, so that’s a path i want to follow.bb march picks 2.jpgfemale empowerment // more great books this month! while on vacation i finished another phryne fisher novel, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag. ¬†currently i’m almost done with the summer before the war by helen simonson, which my mom picked out for me and i am head-over-heels in love with. ¬†i highly recommend all of these novels. ¬†they all have powerful female leads – which seems to be¬†a theme in all of my favorite books! – as well as some slightly magical elements. ¬†the house at the end of hope street was especially beautiful and i couldn’t have read it at a better time. ¬†i’m so glad i’m back into my regular reading habits – it took a while after college for me to get back into read for fun. ¬†reading has gotten me through so much in my life and has truly allowed me to travel the world from my little bed. ¬†next in my reading queue is the storied life of aj fikry by gabrielle zevin, desert solitaire by edward abbey, and girl waits with a gun by amy stewart, and¬†offshore by penelope fitzgerald.

spotify // i’ve been using spotify for the past few months after my sister introduced me to its magical powers. ¬†this month i have been absolutely in love with a number of playlists – most of them 60s and 70s oriented. ¬†i’m also having fun creating my own dream playlists – i’m at babybohemian if you want to follow along. ¬†i’m working on a really good “california” set right now if you are interested.

samathome518 youtube // mercedes of l’amour et la musique mentions sam of samathome518 a ton, so i finally got the hint and checked out her videos. ¬†she is the absolute cutest thing (and 100% reminds me of my mom’s best friend and my surrogate aunt) and i love her love of makeup. ¬†she got into makeup more recently than most – which i totally relate to – and has an amazing eye for colors, textures, etc. ¬†she is half a conventional makeup purchaser and half an eco makeup purchaser, so i love to see her picks and opinions. ¬†truly a ray of sunshine and i highly recommend checking out her channel.bb march picks 1.jpgand that’s it! ¬†march has been a very stressful but rewarding month. ¬†i finally feel like i have my head on straight and know what the future (or at least near future/ok next few months) will hold for me. ¬†i’m so excited for this next phase of my life to begin – to be studying and learning again, to have my own home, to meet new people and make new friends – and i’m so excited to keep sharing my little life with you here on baby bohemian. ¬†thanks for following along, for sharing the love, and for being my people.

february picks // better late than never

bb feb picks 3.jpggood hair //

i feel like it is quite rare that i have some actual hair favorites! ¬†this topic and one of these products will be familiar to you if you read this post, but there are some different products too. if you didn’t read that post (which you should. now.), i am pretty lame with my hair and usually just wash with head&shoulders or something comparable, maybe put in some salt spray, and air dry. ¬†but this month i’ve been shaking it up.

step 1: brush. ¬†now i have never been a hairbrusher. ¬†i know that sounds absolutely crazy, but when i brush my hair it gets…big. but lately, i’ve taken to brushing my hair before the shower to get rid of that dreaded rats nest from scarves and coat collars with this brush that i got from urban ($6). ¬†i think it is definitely the combination of pre-shower brushing and this brush that have completely changed how i wash my hair. ¬†my hair feels thicker, stronger, and shinier, and i have much less fallout than i used to. ¬†for winter hair, i’d say those results are pretty amazing.

step 2: wash. ¬†r+co cactus shampoo¬†($24) has been a full on love this month and will be for a while. ¬†this is the product you will recognize from that previous post. ¬†i don’t use this every time i wash my hair because it is pretty pricey, but i wish i could. ¬†i’ve been popping a little bit of conditioner on the ends of my hair and then lathering up with the cactus, and the results are beachy, summery, untamed, and perfect.

step 3: hair oil. ¬†i have never ever used a hair oil. ¬†that being said, i had my worries about not using full conditioner with the cactus shampoo, so i figured i would pick one up and try it out. ¬†i grabbed the verb ghost oil ($14) the last time i was at sephora because it has great reviews online and is the cheapest they have (of course i didn’t need to get a hair product at sephora, but you know, product junkie). ¬†i was tempted to get the ouai hair oil but it’s a smaller bottle¬†and double the price. anyways, this oil is beautiful. ¬†it is lightweight and not sticky at all, plus smells and feels amazing. ¬†i just put a little drop on my fingers and rub it together, then put the most on my ends and flip my hair over and finger comb with the excess. ¬†i don’t have a lot to base it on, but this oil is amazing!bb feb picks 4.jpggood reads //¬†when i was a kid i used to read 2 or 3 books at a time, and i have found myself doing that again this month.

introducing the honorable phryne fisher¬†& the miss fisher series¬†by kerry greenwood // you all know that i loooooove miss fisher’s murder mysteries the show and now i’m loving the books as well! ¬†i got this one on amazon and it contains the first three miss fisher stories, two of which were turned into episodes. ¬†i do prefer the show version – the characters and storylines are more established – but maybe it’s just because i’m so dedicated to it. ¬†all in all, they are super fun and easy to read and i will probably get them all! ¬†i love having a series to complete. ¬†i¬†have made my way through 6 of the books in the series and am starting number 7.

an extraordinary theory of objects by stephanie lacava // i think¬†i got this book while traveling in paris a few years ago, but it has been gathering dust on my shelf since then (honestly i can’t remember the exact details of where this came from). ¬†i decided to bring it with me on my most recent travels and it was such a lovely companion. ¬†this memoir is the beautiful and very striking story of the author as a young girl, discovering and dealing with her depression when her family is uprooted and moved to france. ¬†it was tragic but hopeful and a very special read.

lolly willowes by sylvia townsend warner // i signed up for a book of the month subscription, and this was offered as an add-on for my first box. ¬†it’s actually the first ever book of the month book, from 1926! ¬†right up my alley, very jane austen-esque. ¬†it is about a middle-aged woman who, after a life of being taken care of by her family and not being able to go her own way, leaves it all behind¬†to follow her heart. ¬†i highly recommend, and i recommend book of the month as well! ¬†i just chose my book for march¬†today and i think it will arrive shortly.

old magazine favorites // i love rereading and getting reinspired from my collection of magazines. ¬†some of my favorites that i looked at over and over this month were some old editions of frankie, suitcase, surfista, and howl. ¬†there’s nothing quite as beautiful to me as an independently-produced magazine.

good brands //

w3ll people // i have picked up three w3ll people products this month and am using all of them daily. ¬†i have previously tried their mascara and concealer and while i didn’t love either one, i do love the ethos of the brand. ¬†the first product i got was the bio brightening powder ($21.99) which is a beautiful slightly mattifying but glow inducing setting powder. ¬†i had been on a search for the perfect setting powder and i think i found it! ¬†at the same time i also picked up the bio bronzer loose powder ($21.99) as i’ve been a little bored with my bronzing options and this guy has great reviews. ¬†it’s a really nice universal shade that gives a very realistic hint of bronze to my skin. ¬†slightly more recently i purchased the narcissist foundation stick (shade 0, pale ivory)¬†($28.99)¬†which is a gorgeous cream foundation stick with extremely light, dewy coverage. ¬†i’ve been using it to even out some redness on my cheeks and nose. ¬†it sinks into the skin undetectably, but evens out the skin and can be built up effectively where necessary. ¬†i truly don’t feel like i’m wearing anything when i have this on – it feels even lighter than the glossier skin tint. ¬†i purchased all of my products at whole foods.bb feb picks 2.jpggood nails //¬†

it’s official. ¬†i’ve fallen into the smith&cult…well, cult. ¬†i own 2 shades: tenderoni and doe my dear. ¬†both are anna instigated products and obviously bitter buddhist (a stunning muted green grey) is next on my list. ¬†i kind of hate the bottles since they are so ridiculously bulky and they have those stupid caps you take off to reveal an extremely small applicator, but i will end my rant here. ¬†the formula is aaaamazing, especially on tenderoni. ¬†it’s basically opi you don’t know jacques, one of my classic polishes, but dare i say better? ¬†less purple undertones and great application. ¬†but if you don’t want to shell out the cash for the high price ($18 vs $10), the opi is a spot on dupe. ¬†doe my dear is my ideal light greige that applies pretty well given the nature of the color. ¬†smith&cult is 5-free.

nails inc. 45 second kensington caviar top coat // when my previous bottle of this guy got old and gloopy at some point last summer, i decided to venture into other top coats and try some things out. ¬†i tried the infamous seche vite which i liked for a little while but then became meh and the sally hansen quick dry top coat which is also meh. ¬†i was previously dedicated to essie good to go, but essie doesn’t always last very long on me so i haven’t gone back to that one. ¬†finally mid-february i decided to get the nails inc. again. ¬†i don’t know what took me so long honestly. ¬†it keeps my nails fresh like no other top coat does, dries literally in 45 seconds, and i have come to the realization that i can’t be without this! ¬†plus, all nails inc. products are at least 5-free, with their nailpure range is 6-free and vegan.

good lips //

sephora coconut balm // sephora came out with some new balms this month and i grabbed the coconut one while in the checkout line one day. ¬†a really solid lip balm with a great coconut scent – real coconut, not chemical coconut. ¬†solid balm at a good price point ($6). ¬†my mom tried mine and loved it so that’s impressive¬†(she is picky about balms and has this clinique one that she claims glues her lips together. ¬†watching her mimic this action is truly hilarious)! ¬†don’t worry, i picked one up for her immediately!

smith’s rosebud salve tube¬†//¬†($6) i¬†have the pot version of the rosebud salve and almost always have one lying around somewhere, which is great, but the tube version is much better in my opinion. ¬†definitely more user and on-the-go friendly. ¬†love the glossy finish without being sticky, the rose scent, the moisturizing properties, etc. etc. ¬†plus you don’t have to worry about it melting and oozing all over your car! ¬†(it happens…a lot.)bb feb picks 5.jpggood finds //¬†

cleansing balms // i started washing my face differently this month and it has completely changed the dryness in my skin.  at the end of january i got the pixi x caroline hirons double cleanse and it completely turned me on to cleansing balms.  this one is two fold Рyou get an oil based cleansing balm and a cream based cleanse and use them one after the other, wiping them off with a damp washcloth.  i fell in love with this process as my nighttime cleanse and wanted to pick up something slightly more eco and with more benefits, so i got the trilogy makeup be gone cleansing balm at my local whole foods.  this is a gorgeous product that is extremely hydrating thanks to mango butter, rosehip oil, and coconut oil as well as other plant oils.  i remove it with a warm bamboo baby washcloths that are extremely soft and gentle Рand by that i mean basically the softest things ever.  the result is smooth and supple skin that requires few moisturizing products afterwards.  i am in love with both of these products and love interchanging them.

l’amour et la musique¬†youtube // i fell in love with mercedes of l’amour et la musique this month. ¬†i found her while on a search for youtube reviews of eco beauty products. ¬†and she is the mecca! ¬†she reviews mostly eco skincare and cosmetics with a touch of conventional ones as well, and is so intelligent and well spoken. ¬†i actually feel that i am gaining knowledge when i watch her videos and i love having a reference for my eco interests besides medical websites. ¬†i love her!! ¬†i highly recommend her videos, especially if you want something a little more intelligent than the usual makeup dribble.

alli cherry¬†youtube // i’ve been watching alli on and off for quite some time. ¬†honestly i used to find her a little boring, but i have completely changed my opinion over the last month. ¬†her content is extremely unique and well constructed, and she makes videos on her minimalist, low-waste, sustainable lifestyle. ¬†very refreshing and very empowering.

spearmint tea // sorry if this is tmi, but i severely suffer from lactose-intolerance and extreme stomach sensitivity, almost on a daily basis. ¬†i’m always researching any natural remedies that will help me feel better and take away some of my symptoms. ¬†i have come across spearmint tea quite frequently and after thoroughly trialling it, i must sing its praises. ¬†spearmint tea is known for many health benefits, but especially for its aid in digestion and management of a variety of stomach symptoms, including those related to ibs. ¬†i actually just love the sweet, refreshing way spearmint tea tastes (i drink it as is, no sugar, no milk, no honey) so i enjoy drinking it even when i’m not struggling with my stomach. ¬†but when i am struggling, i find it soothes my symptoms and eases my pain very quickly, and for that i extremely grateful. ¬†other benefits include fresh breath, hormonal balance, stress relief, and chronic disease prevention. ¬†it is also a great aid to dieters when paired with healthy diet and exercise. ¬†it is important to note that these benefits are from spearmint tea, i’m not sure if mint or peppermint tea apply. ¬†i find mine at whole foods.

kevita sparkling probiotic drinks // in the same vein as the beverage above, i started drinking kevita this month. ¬†in the past 2 weeks i don’t know if a day has gone by that i haven’t had at least half a bottle of one. ¬†it’s quite an expensive habit, but i actually think it is helping my tummy troubles. ¬†basically it’s a sparkling juice drink that is filled with good bacteria for your stomach and digestion. ¬†it’s a little kombucha-tasting (at least the flavors i have tried) but not too much and is really quite refreshing. ¬†not too sweet, organic, and all natural. ¬†i’ve been buying in bulk at whole foods. ¬†my favorite flavors are strawberry acai coconut and hibiscus berry.bb feb picks 1.jpggood living //

i haven’t mentioned it yet here, mostly because it is a topic that is extremely difficult for me to talk about, but in just a few weeks my parents are moving out of my childhood home. ¬†since i currently live in said home, i have been completely part of the moving process. ¬†and even though i hate that we are doing it, i am learning a lot about myself through this move. ¬†i’m reevaluating what i have and getting rid of what i don’t need – both physically and emotionally. ¬†i’m centering myself around the person that i truly want to be and am becoming/almost am, and i’m keeping what i feel benefits that person. ¬†even right down to the skincare and makeup and crap that i keep in my bathroom. ¬†i’m letting go and i’m creating a new space that is organic and natural and equal to me. ¬†through this, i’m¬†especially reevaluating the material items that aren’t benefitting me in a health manner, and i’m turning over a new eco leaf. ¬†it’s something i have delved into in the past, but it stressed me out and¬†at times felt like too much to conquer. ¬†but now i’m paying attention. ¬†i’m using up and then getting rid of the scary chemicals and nasty ingredients and the shit that i just don’t use or need or even want. ¬†but more on that later…
