french pharmacy favorites

bb french pharmacy1.jpgok i know you’re rolling your eyes at the title of this post, but don’t leave me just yet!¬† it’s such a cliche post these days, but it’s true – these are some of my absolute favorite products, and they happen to come from the “french pharmacy” as well.¬† at the bottom of this post, peek some of my favorite posts and videos in the same vein as this one.bb french pharmacy2.jpgbb french pharmacy3.jpgembryolisse lait creme concentrate // i have had this moisturizer on hand for years.¬† it’s a very simple but effective product and intensely hydrates the skin without being greasy or overly sticky.¬† i usually use this in the morning for hydration and as a dewy primer before makeup, but i have used it as night in a pinch as well.¬† this product doesn’t have the best ingredients and i hate that it contains mineral oil and fragrance, but i can’t deny the effectiveness.bb french pharmacy7.jpgklorane dry shampoo //¬†this is quite honestly the only dry shampoo i have ever tried.¬† i’m not a big dry shampoo user, but it’s a product that i need to have on hand, just in case.¬† this gives the hair not only a clean feeling but a bit of oomph and volume which i definitely need when i’m foregoing a wash.¬† i¬†will occasionally spray it on damp hair which gives the hair a nice amount of grit and volume, a trick i found thanks to this post on the file.bb french pharmacy4.jpgavene eau thermale //¬†i have mentioned this product a looot, so i won’t bore your ears/eyes, but it is now a staple for me that i don’t ever want to be without.¬† i spray this after showering and washing my face to remove the minerals in my water that irritate my skin.¬† it’s also excellent as a mid-day refresher and to take the powderiness away from your makeup.¬† this is going to be aaamazing come summertime so i am going to purchase some of the travel size bottles to keep in my bags and car.bb french pharmacy5.jpgbioderma sensibio h2o //¬†another product that i mention quite frequently, but it’s just that good.¬† it’s the perfect first step to a nighttime routine, especially if you don’t wear a ton of makeup.¬† it’s just a staple and beautifully basic!¬† i switched over to the garnier micellar water some months ago because it’s easier for me to find, but i did pick up another bottle of bioderma for when i finish the garnier.¬† yes, they are pretty much the exact same product, but sometimes it’s nice to have something a little bit more fun and french, yeah?

bioderma sensibio mask //¬†i have mentioned this mask before, but i originally bought it when i finished my second tub of the glossier moon mask.¬† i was really just looking for something new to replace the glossier, and this turned out to be sooo much better!¬† i feel like it hydrates my skin for days to come, versus the less permanent results of the glossier.¬† extremely soothing, takes away redness, and gives my skin a lift.¬† it’s also great as a hand mask!¬† i have previously tried the light moisturizer in this line as well and can honestly say bioderma has some great basics.bb french pharmacy6.jpgand, if you’re not bored yet, peek these french ladies:

best discoveries of 2017

bb2017 2.jpgwoweeee, is it really time for a 2017 roundup?  that is truly shocking.  as i did last year, i thought i would put together all the products, brands, and other items that i discovered and fell in love with in 2017.bb2017 1.jpgproducts //

la roche posay tolerane hydrating cleanser: a beautifully basic cleanser for those of us with dry skin that don’t feel like washing our faces with lotion.¬† i love this because i can tell that it’s cleaning my face but isn’t stripping it, which is surprisingly hard to find.¬† i think the best description of this is to compare it to cetaphil, but with good ingredients and hydrating benefits.¬† mentioned here.

thayer’s alcohol-free witch hazel: the best toner.¬† it makes my skin feel hydrated and balanced and i do think it has been keeping my skin more clear and glowy than usual.¬† i use this always during my nighttime skincare routine, and in the morning if i feel oily or sweaty and need to give my face a little rinse.¬† mentioned here.

indie lee squalane oil: i went through 2 whole bottles of this oil this year!¬† this oil is both lightweight and intensely hydrating, making it perfect for both day and night use.¬† i can honestly say this oil has a firm place in my skincare routines.¬† my one critique is that the packaging has become unusable on both bottles, so i’ve had to decant it into another dropper bottle.¬† mentioned here.

jordan samuel hydrate: this was a later discovery for me, but i’ve gone through an entire 1 oz bottle and have moved on to the new 4 oz. size.¬† this is the most wonderful hyaluronic acid serum i’ve ever tried, due to the inclusion of aloe and other hydrating and soothing ingredients.¬† the price is also very reasonable, and the 4 oz. size offers a savings of $44.¬† if you like the hylamide low molecular ha, i think you will be even more pleased with this product as the textures and results are similar, but definitely amped in the js.¬† mentioned here.

clinique mineral spf: aaaand the mineral sunscreen search is finally over!¬† this sunscreen is completely phsyical, very hydrating, doesn’t leave a white cast, easy to find, and reasonably priced (even though the container is quite small).¬† i am absolutely ecstatic to have discovered this product.¬† mentioned here.

first aid beauty hello fab coconut primer: you may recall my search for a more natural product similar to mac strobe cream.¬† and here it is, bohemians.¬† this primer has a gorgeous pinky glow with incredible moisturizing benefits.¬† i don’t go a day without it and it’s very easy to get sample sizes as sephora perks!¬† on its own or under other base products, this is FAB!¬† get it?¬† ugh.¬† mentioned here.

glossier stretch concealer:¬†i finally caved and bought this, and my only regret is that i didn’t do it sooner.¬† the shade light has the perfect slightly peachy tone to work both under my eyes and around my face, and most days i smush this into my skin as a light foundation.¬† i wish that i could replace this with the rms un-cover up, but until they release ANY cool toned shades, the glossier stretch concealer is a firm favorite.¬† it has even turned my into an under-eye-concealer-wearer – at least a little bit! mentioned here.

colourpop super shock shadow in mixed tape: i bought a few colourpop products at the beginning of 2017, but this is the only one that has stuck around for the long haul.  the perfect silvery taupe shade, this product is insanely easy to smush onto the eyelids and call it a day.  i wear this both during the day and at night, which is definitely saying something.  i even bought a backup!  mentioned here.

rms swift shadow in tt-73:¬†like colourpop mixed tape, this is an eye shadow i reach for both day and night.¬† it’s a beautiful neutral, midtone brown with a hint of sheen that gives the most natural, undone look.¬† i absolutely adore it and every time i put it away, i miss it and put it back in my makeup bag again.¬† mentioned here.

burt’s bees lipstick in nile nude:¬†once again, a product i wear both day and night.¬† i think this is the real test of how much i love something, actually.¬† this creamy, hydrating lipstick lightens up my lips the perfect amount with a hint of peachy, browny, pink sheen.¬† staple status.

kosas lipstick in stardust:¬†i know kosas is all over the interwebs right now, but there is absolutely a million reasons why.¬† stardust is the most stunning neutral shade that makes my lips slightly bitten but without being over the top.¬† again, peachy browny deliciousness that i have around at all times.¬† if you want a lipstick that offers a hint of color but doesn’t look like full on lipstick, stardust is your gal.¬† and the name.¬† the name!¬† mentioned here.

j.hannah nail polish in ghost ranch, iris, and watermelon: though expensive, these 7-free polishes are one of my absolute favorite formulas.  the color range is incredibly unique and based around the concept of color for people who hate color.  i definitely have my eye on more shades.  mentioned here.

primal pit past roll-on in jasmine:¬†finally a natural deodorant that really works for me.¬† natural deodorants are different for everyone, so it has taken quite a bit of trial and error to find the one that works best for me.¬† i prefer the roll-on version of this brand versus the pot version, but both are solid choices.¬† plus, this doesn’t leave permanent stains on clothing like the schmidt’s rose + vanilla did (my previous favorite).

everyday coconut hydrating shampoo and conditioner: very basic sulfate-free products, but very effective ones.¬† these make my hair feel summer-like even in the winter when it wants to be lank and limp.¬† after buying bulk sizes during the summer, i’m steadily making my way through, but i think i’ve found my favorite eco shampoo and conditioner duo.¬† mentioned here.bb2017 3.jpgbrands //¬†

frank body: i’ve seen this brand a ton around instagram over the years because of their coffee scrubs, but i was never interested until reading about their glow mask.¬† the mask is truly delicious (it smells like frosting), and gives my skin an instant, glowy boost.¬† it’s one of those masks that you leave on for just a few minutes, so it’s perfect for mornings when your skin is especially lackluster.¬† their lip balm is also a staple in my purse these days – it is very similar to the glossier balm dotcom, but formulated with lanolin, vitamin e, and coconut oil instead of petroleum and other nasties.¬† frank can also be found at ulta, which makes it very easy to restock!¬† mentioned here.

alima pure:¬†alima is my absolute dream brand.¬† i find myself reaching for their products on a daily basis, and each one is more useable than the next.¬† it’s a brand that i just click with, from their ethos to their ingredients, and i think that is hard to find these days.¬† my favorites are the pressed foundation, pressed eye shadow in icon, and lip tint in honey.¬† mentioned here.

early morning makeup (for a minimalist)

i’ve started student teaching (EEEEEEEEEK), which requires me to commute over an hour at 6 am.¬† it’s truly not that bad, but it requires me to be very organized the night before and pretty quick in the morning.¬† after a little experimentation, i’ve got my makeup routine down pat, and i knew you would all want to see it ūüėČbb early am1.jpgas fall is thankfully making its presence known, i’ve gone back to my layering technique to keep my skin fresh and hydrated.¬† after using my clinique mineral sunscreen, i’ve been putting generous mix of embryolisse and first aid beauty coconut primer all over my face and neck.¬† i haven’t been using any base products cause i truly can’t be bothered, so i pop a little glossier stretch concealer in light on any areas that might be a little red or discolored.¬† sephora bright future concealer in meringue covers up the blemishes that somehow haven’t been too bad.

while letting all that moisture sink into the skin, i curl my lashes with the surratt curlers and apply a light coat of mascara Рeither pacifica stellar gaze (back to this love!) in supernova (black) or covergirl lash blast volume in black/brown.  then i brush up my brows with a spoolie and pop on a little maybelline clear mascara to keep them in place.

back to the face and here’s where it changes depending on my mood.¬† after applying a light layer of alima pure pressed powder foundation in macadamia – keeps my skin glowy but not shiny and offers the perfect amount of light coverage, i either go in with blush or bronzer.¬† for bronzer i’m still loving the¬†hourglass diffused bronze light and for blush i’ve been reaching for the pixi multibalm in baby petal.¬† add a little rms living luminizer and the face is done!bb early am2.jpgfor lips it’s usually lip balm, but sometimes i’ll do a little bit of the burt’s bees lipstick in nile nude.¬† it’s the PERFECT neutral nude that lightens the lips up in a healthy, juicy way.¬† very moisturizing and even a minimalist like me can enjoy it daily.

so that’s that!¬† if i have an extra second i’ll spritz my face with some rosewater or some sort of hydrosol.¬† basically my aesthetic here is to be fresh-faced and put together, but simple and clean.¬† what’s your go-to work makeup routine?

early morning makeup (for a minimalist)

june picks

bb june picks1.jpgproducts //

auric blends desert night perfume oil after visiting the farmer’s market one saturday i was in my local co-op browsing the essential oil section. ¬†i picked up this perfume oil and took a sniff when an older man asked me what i was checking out. ¬†i shared this beautiful scent with him and we got to talking. ¬†he told me about his work as an aromatherapist as well as some stories from his life, and i told him a little bit about me. ¬†it was a beautiful exchange, he gave me some wisdom that i will cherish forever, and i hope i made his day a little brighter as well. ¬†after he left me i knew i had to get this beautiful perfume oil, to remind me of him, of meeting new friends, and of sharing love and light with as many people as we can on this earth.

monk oil #2 recently renamed “dawn.” ¬†i mentioned this beautiful body oil here, but i had to mention it again. ¬†i have been mixing a little in with my body moisturizer – i’m currently using the alba organica ultra emollient and it’s a new staple for me for sure – soaks in quickly and makes my body softer than ever. ¬†i get the benefits of both products in one and the added benefit of not using this oil up to quickly as it is quite pricey. ¬†the scent is calming and brings me back to center.

primal pit paste i used up my meow meow tweet baking soda-free deodorant and picked this up at the grocery store to replace it. ¬†i think i like this better, probably because of the baking soda which thankfully doesn’t seem to irritate my skin. ¬†nice deodorant, probably not groundbreaking but i like it a lot. ¬†it is easier to rub in than the mmt and doesn’t ball up as some deodorants seem to. ¬†i am still layering it with the ursa major one for extra sweaty days (which are plentiful here in indiana).

mac patentpolish lip pencil in revved up i will admit that i got suckered into buying this, but i am so glad that i did! ¬†i’ve been liking how peaches look on me – usually i’m a light pink lip girl – and the formula is very similar to the clinique intense chubby sticks. ¬†it has the right amount of gloss and sheer color to look simple and not overdone, but it makes me feel a little more put together than usual.

first aid beauty ultra repair intensive lip balm my love affair with fab continues! ¬†i picked this up because i read it is similar to the nuxe reve de miel, a previous favorite that doesn’t have the ingredient list i like to see, and they are pretty much identical. ¬†this has that same somewhat gritty texture that exfoliates and moisturizes the lips at the same time. ¬†it is slightly more solid than the nuxe, but the results are spot on. ¬†it lasts all night and i can still feel it in the morning, which tells me it is really doing it’s job. ¬†if you are looking for a heavy-duty lip product, i recommend checking this out.

garnier micellar water and thayer’s alcohol-free rose witch hazel i have a post coming all about these so i won’t go in depth, but they have been hardcore favorites all month long.

ray ban wayfarers i have had these sunglasses for probably 7 years, wearing them on and off.  this summer they have been the only sunglasses i have liked to wear.  they are sturdy and perfectly molded to my face Рhighly recommend getting your sunglasses adjusted if you can, it makes all the difference.  i can throw them in my bag or in my car without worrying too much.  plus they have small bite marks from when my dog was a puppy so that makes me happy as well.bb june picks3.jpgentertainment //

the office Рi have never enjoyed the office.  it makes me sad, to be honest.  but after watching a few episodes with a friend, i got completely sucked in.  i finally see the humor behind it and that it is very sweet, not sad (for the most part).  and obviously i am in full support of jim and pam, just to clear that up.

a new book – i haven’t been reading as much lately as i was the first half of the year, but i just started reading a new book that i can’t not mention. ¬†i got jd salinger: the last interview while in new york and only just had the time to start reading, but i already love it. ¬†salinger is such an enigmatic but iconic figure in american literature and it is so interesting to finally learn about him, but it also makes me feel sad that he was essentially chased and stalked most of his life.

blogs – the opal gray¬†is yet another beauty blog, but there’s something about it that’s extra special. ¬†i believe i found the author on instagram and started reading her blog from there, but honestly i can’t quite remember. ¬†her photography is gorgeous and i really appreciate her product reviews. ¬†now if she would only post more often! ¬†another blog i have added to my daily reading list is free & native. ¬†this one is a different from my usual beauty and fashion blogs, but one that i am needing right now. ¬†free & native is the blog of herbalist and manifestation advisor lacy phillips, and she shares her techniques for more wholesome, free, and intentional living, as well as the people, places, and things inspiring her.

the lipstick that bohemian dreams are made of

this bohemian’s dreams, at least. ¬†it’s called stardust. ¬†need i say more? ¬†MY PERFECT LIPSTICK IS CALLED STARDUST.bb kosas stardust5.jpgok moving on from how happy that makes me. ¬†i have been wanting to try a kosas cosmetics lipstick since they came onto the scene about two years ago. ¬†they are full of great ingredients and don’t use any of the bad ones, including parabens, pthalates, mineral oil, phenoxyethanol, fragrance, petrolatum, and more. ¬†all of kosas’ colors are natural-looking and understated, even the darker or brighter ones. ¬†they are not only beautiful but unique, and a true staple for anyone, makeup lover or not.

so back to the colors. ¬†i was pretty set on getting rosewater, which is described as a blushing rose, with a hydrating finish. ¬†and then kosas released more shades for s/s 2016, including stardust. ¬†and i was sold! ¬†how could i resist a name like that? ¬†stardust is described as a sheer neutral nude with pink and brown undertones, like a summer tan. ¬†ok, now how could i resist THAT?bb kosas stardust2.jpgbb kosas stardust1.jpgbut in all seriousness, stardust is exactly how kosas describes it. ¬†it is the perfect neutral brown pink, with not too much brown but not too much pink. ¬†it is truly my lips but better. ¬†it’s also the perfect level of color, so it doesn’t make it too obvious that i’m wearing lipstick. ¬†the finish is hydrating but not slippery, and extremely long lasting. ¬†honestly it really is like a summer tan – i just feel better with it on.

at $24, these lipsticks are expensive, but also in the exact price range of other natural and conventional lipsticks. ¬†they are packaged in a beautiful black tube with white writing – i did hope it would be metal packaging but it’s plastic. ¬†that was kind of disappointing but it also means that it is a lot lighter to carry around. ¬†this is the first lipstick that i have wanted to wear every day and that doesn’t make me feel overdone – it’s just the perfect amount of oomph for me.bb kosas stardust3.jpgmy only question is, why did it take me so long to bite the bullet? ¬†pun very much intended.stardust1.jpgbb kosas stardust4.jpg

the lipstick that bohemian dreams are made of

bb eco faves.jpgas i get older, i’m figuring out more and more how i want to treat and take care of my body. ¬†from exercise (work in progress) to wearing sunscreen to figuring out some medical stuff, i’m trying to cherish this body i am in and help myself live my best life. ¬†i’ve come to realize that there are certain things in my life that are nonnegotiable – acne and antidepressant medications, at least for right now – and¬†that’s ok, as long as i do my best to balance it out. ¬†one huge area for me in that regard¬†is beauty and skincare (bet you didn’t see that coming…). ¬†i spoke on my efforts to go more natural in this post last june, and wanted to do a little follow up.

as i’ve mentioned 1000 times, i’m very low key when it comes to makeup and skincare, but really enjoy the process of wanting, trying, and buying products. ¬†while i’m always trying to cure this crazy need to consume, i’m really making an effort to consume more consciously. ¬†so basically, if i have to buy a new blush, i’m making sure it has clean ingredients, rates well in terms of non-toxicity, and is not going to harm my body in the long run. ¬†this can be tough and there are certain areas where i will not budge – almost anything nars obviously – but i think that is completely fine.

basically, i just want to do what is right for my body.  there are always circumstances in which we need a little outside help, but i believe so strongly in doing what we can to help ourselves, even just a little bit.  of course there are a million variables we cannot control, but why not do something about the variables we can control?

it can be extremely overwhelming to look at the makeup in your bag and the food in your fridge and think all of this is bad, so don’t look at it like that. ¬†start when you can and where you can. ¬†it doesn’t have to be everything. ¬†any changes you can make to live a healthier lifestyle will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine. ¬†and to help get you started, i’m going to be my middle-name-instigator self and fill you in on my favorite eco beauty and skincare products.

bb eco skincare faves.jpg
skincare

trilogy makeup be gone cleansing balm, used with eco/organic baby washcloths :: it’s all about the cleansing balms, guys. ¬†my dry skin feels so much healthier and more hydrated, and i need less oil and moisturizer after using a balm cleanser.

go-to face hero oil :: i’ve waxed poetic about this many a time so i won’t bore you, but…best face oil ever. ¬†jampacked with delicious ingredients – think no synthetics, parabens, petrochemicals, etc.

desert essence organic jojoba¬†oil :: i’ve used this for a loooong time as both an eye makeup remover and face oil. ¬†jojoba oil is one of the best matches to our skin’s natural sebum so it’s an excellent moisturizer. ¬†you can also add this to make up for a more moisturizing and dewy look – basically it’s a great all-rounder.

kiss my face sensitive skin sunscreen :: my favorite facial sunscreen. ¬†it’s very hydrating so best for dry to normal skin, but i love the moisturizing boost. ¬†there is some debate because this contains the chemical octinoxate, but it is at an accepted amount as decided by the fda. ¬†also it rates a 3 on ewg (a grading resource for product’s toxicity and health levels), so i’m ok with that for now and will just get something else when i run out.

evan healy lavender hydrosoul :: again, won’t bore you. ¬†best facial spray of all time. ¬†bye!

weleda skin food :: an amazing all over cream. ¬†i use this under and on my eyes, around my nose when i’m dry, on my hands and cuticles. ¬†you get it. ¬†also it smells like a gin and tonic in the best way.

weleda hand lotions :: i love the sea buckthorn and am currently using the regenerating pomegranate.  non greasy and really beneficial if you have dry hands like me.

dr. bronner’s bar soap :: my favorite in-shower soap. ¬†really simple and gets the job done, plus there isn’t any plastic packaging to deal with so that’s a big eco thumbs up (wow that was painfully dorky). ¬†my favorites are eucalyptus and the baby/unscented version.

shea moisture body wash :: so luxe, so lathering.  filled with natural and organic ingredients and without parabens and sulfates.  not strictly eco, but the majority of their products, besides their hair coloring-system line, rate between 1 and 3 on ewg, which is pretty great.

body lotion :: this is more of my summer moisturizer but i adore the mountain ocean skin trip coconut lotion, which i’ve mentioned many a time. ¬†it’s just a little too light for these dry chicago winters.

hair :: i’m not using any eco hair products right now but i love, and have repurchased multiple times, the acure ultra-hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

others :: i’m still on the hunt for a moisturizer to replace my beloved cetaphil and a good natural deodorant that actually works. ¬†i just ordered the meow meow tweet baking soda-free jar deodorant and the ursa major deodorant stick to use together, and am currently doing a deoderant-detox before those arrive. ¬†i’ve learned that layering¬†is the best way to have success with natural deodorants, so i’ll keep you posted. ¬†also an eye cream, but i have some contenders that i mentioned here. ¬†also not mentioned, but you all know my weleda lip balm is my best friend.

makeup

w3ll people narcissist foundation stick :: in shade 0 this brightens my face and covers any redness with a few quick swipes.  blends out into almost nothing or definitely something depending on what you want.

w3ll people bio brightening powder :: the best setting powder, basically hourglass ambient lighting powders in mineral and nontoxic form.  a little glow and a little less shine.

w3ll people bio bronzing powder :: gorgeous bronzing powder for us bronzer addicts. ¬†i wasn’t sure about mineral powder bronzer, but this is so perfect and lightweight. ¬†it’s a great universal shade that can be applied very sheer and then built up.

tata harper volumizing lip to cheek :: i’ve had very charming since last summer and it is the perfect blue-based pink to add a natural flush and perkiness to the face. ¬†i recently picked up very nice which is the light glowy pink of my dreams.

mineral fusion blush in flashy :: the prettiest slightly shimmery peach blush. ¬†very subtle and very natural. ¬†a hint of shimmer is there but not overpowering or obvious on the cheeks. ¬†i don’t have it anymore, but i think this would be similar to hourglass dim infusion blush.

rms living luminizer :: a cult product for a reason. ¬†the only highlighter i own and want. ¬†it’s an icy dewy shimmer that gives that wet look to the cheek without being obvious at all.

rms eye polish in myth :: pretty much the only eye shadow i use these days.  very sheer taupe that looks glossy but stays.

pacifica stellar gaze mascara :: right now i’m using stardust (brown), but i had supernova (black) prior to this tube. this is my favorite mascara, eco or otherwise. ¬†it’s natural but both volumizing and lengthening. ¬†most importantly? ¬†it conditions your lashes and gives them the attention they deserve!

gabriel eye shadow in sable :: the gabriel eye shadows are so nice!  very pigmented and smooth.  i only have this shade which is a taupey light brown that i love all over the lids and in the crease a little bit.  i thought it would be similar to urban decay naked, but it has a touch more purple/rosiness to it, in the best way.  very natural and very beautiful.  i want to get more of these eye shadows, maybe a dark brown next.

jane iredale eye shadow in cappucino :: i don’t have this at the moment because mine shattered and it is about $22 to replace it. ¬†but this is one of my all time favorite eye shadows and is a great dupe for urban decay naked (that is my favorite “conventional” eye shadow so i compare everything to it!). ¬†a staple for me! ¬†i actually think i am going to pick up this palette of 5 shadows instead of just a new single shadow in cappucino – i don’t actually have any shadows in those colors/that are eco and it will be a great staple product.

pacifica enlighten eye shadow palette in mystical ::¬†although i just picked this up, it’s already a favorite. ¬†this 4-shadow palette has a stunning combination of shades and the formulas are incredible. ¬†they feel as buttery and pigmented as lorac shadows, seriously! ¬†and at $14 it’s a beautiful thing!

gressa lip boost in bare :: the prettiest almost matte tinted balm.  a light pinky nude that can also be worn on the cheeks!  quite similar to the tata harper very nice actually, but i prefer that formula as a blush.

ilia lipstick crayon in kharma chameleon :: i don’t know what’s better, the name or the shade. ¬†this stunning hot coral has a satin finish and is perfect on a hot summer night. ¬†i wore this to my sister’s rehearsal dinner and got many a compliment. ¬†i can’t wait to brig this baby back out!

bite beauty matte lip pencils and multisticks :: now there is some debate over these because of some of the color dyes that they use, but to me these are ideal. ¬†they are natural and actually food grade, and the color pay off and color options are incredibly. ¬†i love the matte crayons – i have a couple mini ones in cafe and glace¬†– because they aren’t totally matte but you can smudge them in to look like a stain, kind of how i use the nars matte lip pencils as well. ¬†the multisticks are really cool and i have the color gelato which is a super cool toned light pink almost veering on lilac which is gorgeous on the eyes and cheeks and patted in lightly on the lips.

nail polish brands :: smith&cult (8-free), pacifica (7-free), rms (6-free), zoya (5-free),¬†nails inc (5-free), and opi (3-free and i believe their infinite shine line is 5-free but i can’t find a definitive answer). ¬†and frankly most polishes are 3 free!bb eco nail faves.jpg

bb eco beauty faves 3.jpg. . .

so there you have it, the eco products that i own and love. ¬†please note that these are not all recent acquisitions and it has taken me a few years to get to this point. ¬†again, i just want to reiterate that my switch to eco products is a work in progress. ¬†i don’t think that i will ever be all the way there. ¬†if i can even get to 50/50 i will be so happy. ¬†and i don’t want to be over here making you feel like you need to throw away all your non-eco products either, because you KNOW i’m always going to be spending too much money at sephora! ¬†all in all, we do what we can and what feels right for ourselves. ¬†so¬†let’s take it one day and one eco deodorant at a time, shall we?

ps: ewg is a great resource to learn about products and what chemicals make them better or worse in terms of safety. ¬†they have a rating system with a¬†catalogue of almost 65,000 products and you can always submit something if you don’t find it on their site. ¬†it can be super frustrating when they don’t have a product or brand listed, but you can also search by particular ingredients and learn about a product that way. ¬†if a product is rated a 1-2 it is of low hazard, 3-6 is¬†moderate hazard, and 7-10 is high hazard. ¬†they also have a list of products that are ewg verified¬†and i think that products are going to start carrying this mark on their actual packaging. ¬†these are products/companies that are free of any concerning ingredients, have ingredients fully disclosed, and follow good manufacturing processes. ¬†i have the app on my phone and use it while i’m shopping for¬†both food items and products.

also pps: do your research! ¬†actually more mainstream products than you think are more eco friendly than you think – a lot of too faced products, for example, rates extremely well on ewg. ¬†it always helps to do your research before making any decisions. ¬†plus a lot of sites like sephora will tell you when a brand is formulated without something – like parabens or sulfates. ¬†it’s a bragging point for sure so you can usually find it mentioned!!

shea moisture coconut & hibiscus range // ¬†i’m really not loyal to any body wash – really¬†they’re all pretty much the same in my opinion. ¬†but somehow this one has become a strong favorite and this is actually the third bottle that i have purchased in a row. ¬†that’s unprecedented! ¬†the smell of this is soooooooo tropical and uplifting and the product itself doesn’t make me feel dry or squeaky the way regular soap does. ¬†i’m not sure about the firming and toning properties – pretty sure only exercise can do that! – but it doesn’t hurt to try. ¬†when i picked up this last bottle there was a buy one get one half off¬†promotion happening at my walgreen’s so i picked up the matching body butter as well. ¬†same amazing smell and it’s really nice and thick, but soaks in immediately. ¬†i put it on after i’ve toweled off but while my skin is still relatively damp and warm. ¬†loving this range! ¬†overall i really like this brand – it’s natural, organic, fair trade, cruelty-free, and sustainably produced. ¬†i have a lip balm from them (mentioned here) and just picked up a shampoo and conditioner set, which i’m sure will be in next month’s picks.

glossier coconut balm dotcom // i loved this over the summer and i’m loving it again. ¬†the scent is incredibly uplifting and it’s just a really nice product. ¬†i like to really pile it up on my lips at night and then in the morning they are totally hydrated and plump. ¬†i prefer this to the original – even though coconut isn’t actually an ingredient i feel like the texture is more coconut-y and more hydrating.

hylamide low-molecular ha serum // i’ve been wanting to get into serums for a while, but didn’t really know where to start. ¬†when the glossier supers arrived, i was so excited and picked up all 3 almost immediately. ¬†i thought it would be a great intro into the serum world, but i was left really disappointed. ¬†i’ve read so many good reviews about the supers, but didn’t see any benefits from any of them. ¬†so after more research, i knew that i really wanted to get a hyaluronic acid serum, and found this one from hylamide. ¬†basically, the hyaluronic acid that is found in our bodies and that is in many skincare items contains molecules that are too large for our skin to absorb. ¬†so the serum or lotion or whatever simply sits on top of our skin, so all the benefits disappear when we wash our faces. ¬†the ha serum from hylamide contains 5 different variations of hyaluronic acid that contain smaller molecules, so our skin is able to absorb these and really get the benefits that that hyaluronic acid provides. ¬†i have definitely seen a moisture difference in my skin after a few weeks of twice daily use, and i look forward to seeing the longer term benefits that this serum promotes. ¬†oh and wait! ¬†i forgot to mention this serum is only $20 and is available at most drugstores. ¬†for a serum, that is a total steal. ¬†deciem, the company that produces hylamide products, is a pretty cool skincare brand that also produces the ordinaries serums, which you might have seen floating around instagram. ¬†those sit at an even lower price point and sound pretty appealing as well.

pacifica nail polish in desert princess // pacifica is quickly becoming one of my favorite brands. ¬†i was on the hunt for a mauvey pink nail polish that wasn’t too grandma-ish and stumbled upon this shade while at whole foods one day. ¬†it’s exactly what i was looking for and shows up nicely on my fair, cool-toned skin. ¬†i like that¬†it feels like a neutral shade, as opposed to a bright pink which honestly i don’t like. ¬†the formula is great and the applicator is even better. ¬†plus that name! ¬†who could resist!

selected writings, truman capote //¬†i found this at south congress books in austin and it took me a split second to decide to buy it. ¬†it’s a first edition from 1962 and contains a ton of stories that i haven’t read and don’t have in my collection. ¬†capote is one of my favorite authors and this is something i will cherish all my life.

a gentleman in moscow, amor towles // talk about favorite authors Рamor towles is absolute amazing!  i read rules of civility first, and then my mom actually forced me to read a gentleman in moscow.  the dialogue is witty, the characters are robust, the environment is palpable, and the plot is unlike anything on the market these days.  i will say it goes on a little longer than necessary, but overall i highly recommend.

leather bookmark // going along with my book favorites this month has been the gorgeous green leather bookmark my sister got me for my birthday. ¬†i don’t own any other bookmarks and i feel so fancy having such a beautiful one! ¬†it’s great especially for my vintage books in which i don’t want to fold down the pages. ¬†it also serves a beautiful reminder of my amazing trip to austin. ¬†thanks lyssie ūüôā

american housewife // my sister introduced me to this show and i have since watched very single episode (basically in one day). ¬†this show couldn’t be funnier or cuter. ¬†it’s a breath of fresh air, so carefree, and so wholesome. ¬†it’s still in the first season so it won’t take you too long to get up to date! ¬†go watch!

madewell succulent earrings & other dangly earrings // ok i had no idea these were called the succulent earrings until i just looked online to get a link for you all (i bought them in store)!!! ¬†could there be anything more perfect for me?! ¬†my sister bought the blue pair for me probably 6 years ago and i am just now feeling like i can wear something so big daily – it’s pretty fun actually.

paring back // my parents are moving out of my childhood home (don’t even get me started…) and as a result we have been going through every single thing we own before the move. ¬†it’s been fun, sad, and extremely cathartic to go through all of my belongings and get rid of those that don’t benefit me anymore. ¬†clothes, books, paraphernalia from grade school…not to sound like marie kondo (i think the fact that she has made so much money off telling people to get rid of things that don’t make them¬†happy – hello duh – is total lunacy…don’t get me started on that either!), but it feels pretty great to not be weighed down by things that¬†i just don’t want in my life anymore.
