remember me?!

oh hi!  remember me?!?!  i mentioned a little bit about my current wifi situation on instagram, but let me go into a little more detail.  i am currently finishing my master’s degree by teaching on the navajo reservation in arizona. so far it’s going really really well, and the only hiccup is that i don’t have wifi in my room (i’m living in the dorm attached to the high school with other students).  i’ve been able to pick up wifi here and there, and a kind teacher told me i can pop by his place whenever i need to use the internet, so hopefully i will be able to start posting again. i did start another blog to record my journey, mostly for family and school purposes, but feel free to follow me over there as well if you’re interested: leahgoeswest.wordpress.com (though again, it’s been difficult for me to post).IMG_3377  truly this experience has already been pretty incredible, and though not everything has been smooth, nor will it be in its entirety, i’m so excited to be on this adventure that i’ve been planning for a long time.  if anyone has any suggestions of things i need to see/places i need to go while i’m in the southwest, please let me know!! i want to go any and everywhere.  i’m currently spending labor day weekend in durango, colorado and don’t ever want to leave this state so that’s a new development!IMG_3407 i have a very limited selection of “things” with me – makeup, skincare, clothes, accessories – so i thought it might be fun to look at the things that i’m missing the most. nothing like being separated from your belongings for 4 months to show you what you really love.

// s t y l e //

coach duffle bag // i have mentioned this bag before on the blog, but this is my favorite purse of any that i own.  it’s a vintage (i think 70s) black leather coach duffle, which is one of their most iconic shapes.  it’s essentially a big bucket bag with an adjustable strap – so i either wear it close to my underarm or even crossbody if it’s extra heavy.  it’s such a classic shape and style and fits my everyday life. i miss you bb! i’m sorry i couldn’t bring you!

baggy levi’s 501s // i have a bunch of levi’s but i only brought my 501 skinnies.  my baggy ones are perfectly soft, worn in, and ripped, and i love that they’re slightly cropped (i cut them myself naturally) and slightly too big.  i love them for every season, with sneakers, with birks, with army boots.  i actually thought that i packed them, but apparently not!  i have no clue what wash i have, but i linked a similar looking pair.

black skinny strap rainbows // i absolutely live in my black rainbows all summer long (and every pair of rainbows i’ve ever had since 7th grade).  i didn’t bring them in favor of my birks, but i wish i had these just for simplicity’s sake.  i do find myself wearing socks with birkenstocks quite a bit these days, which is probably not a habit i should get into!!!!

cape cod bracelets // i love my two little silver bangles with silver or gold screw balls.  is anyone else familiar with these?  i usually wear them during the summer and then phase them out come fall, but i didn’t do that this year and i don’t have them with me.  i go through phases of wearing a lot of necklaces or a lot of bracelets, and right now i’m forgoing both to be simple and under-the-radar.  no fun!bb feather // b e a u t y //

igk 1995 shampoo // i’m in love with this texturing shampoo.  it just wasn’t feasible for me to bring something so particular and that i don’t use every time i wash my hair, but this is my favorite texturing shampoo of the few i’ve tried.  the r+co cactus shampoo is my second in command, but the 1995 is just a little grittier.

dedcool fragrance 02 // i don’t wear perfume enough to justify bringing it (i just brought my usual sandalwood fragrance oil), but i really miss this scent.  it’s one of those that just melts into your skin and seems like what you actually smell like, a little bit woodsy and masculine, a little bit clean, a little bit warm.  sandalwood is my favorite scent of all time, and that is the base of 02 with something extra.IMG_3349bb dorm. . .

natural products @ sephora

bb sephora naturals1.pngsephora has always had a small edit of natural products, but they just released their “clean at sephora” mark of approval.  there is a special page dedicated to clean products and all products that are formulated without the following are given a special check mark: sulfates sls and sles, parabens, formaldehydes, formaldehyde-releasing agents, phthalates, mineral oil, retinyl palmitate, oxybenzone, coal tar, hydroquinone, triclosan, triclocarban, and less than one percent of syhnthetic fragrance if any.  in honor of this pretty exciting day, peek some of my favorite natural and available at sephora products as of late.bb sephora naturals2.pngbb natural at sephora5.jpg// rms beauty //

though rose marie is admittedly a little insane on instagram, i’m a big sucker for her little pots of goodness.  i own six of her current products and love each of them equally: the champagne rose luminizer for a deliciously dewy glow on the cheekbones and eye lids, eye polish in aura for an ethereal sheen on the lids, buriti bronzer for a sunkissed flush or warm sheeny lids, lip2cheek in vogue rose (limited edition) for a peachy pink blush that melts in perfectly with the buriti bronzer, and two of the powder swift shadows in tt-73 and em-68.  i previously owned the eye polish in myth and loved it before it stopped offering any pigment, definitely due to its age and the natural ingredients.  living luminzer is a cult classic that i have had and loved, but i definitely prefer the champagne rose luminizer with its beigey and slightly pink hint of color.  i also have two limited edition trios from rms, but they are unfortunately unavailable.

// ilia //

the ilia multistick in tenderly is a product i love for all seasons.  it’s the perfect cool pink with just a hint of peach that brightens my fair skin perfectly.  i love that this never sets and remains dewy on the skin, slightly more wet-looking than the rms lip2cheeks but in a great way.  i also used the flow-thru translucent powder last summer, but the packaging was a bit finicky so i won’t be repurchasing.

// herbivore botanicals //

i have only tried two products by herbivore, which are the rose hibiscus spray and the coco rose coconut oil body polish.  the spray is decent but nothing worth the price tag, i far prefer the heritage store rosewater and glycerin for a hydrating and refreshing rose mist for a fraction of the price of the herbivore one.  the scrub, however, is absolutely amazing!  soooo refining while also being hydrating because of the coconut oil inclusion.  i got a mini size in some sephora gift set years ago, but when i would love to purchase the full size at some point.  it’s one of those products that i can’t really justify but i know i will splurge on someday when i need a little retail therapy.bb natural at sephora3.jpg// maison louis marie //

this is perhaps the most exciting brand to be carried at sephora.  i absolutely adore the no 4 bois de balincourt perfume oil (pretty much everyone does) and it’s a great alternative to le labo santal 33.  i may even like the former over the latter; it’s a little bit more focused on the sandalwood inclusion and somehow i’m on my second bottle of this.  sephora now has their oils, perfumes, and candles!  i have heard wonderful things about all the other scents they offer as well as the one i’ve tried.

// captain blankenship //

many moons ago i tried the mermaid sea salt spray and loved it and then grew to loathe it.  the scent is very peppery and i just couldn’t handle it as i made my way to the bottom of the bottle.  still, i love this brand and really did get great results from the salt spray.  i may even try it again in the near future just to see if my tastes (read: scents) have changed.  i also want to try the new mermane shampoo and conditioner, but am waiting until sephora stocks the travel sizes.

other notable brands that are new to the sephora scene are indie lee, isle of paradise (go jules!!!!), moon juice, and antonym cosmeticsgo-to skincare is an aussie brand that is also listed on the site, which would be incredible!  i love their face hero oil.  so far the link doesn’t go anywhere, but i hope that it will be available soon.bb natural at sephora4.jpg. . .

february picks

it was an extremely busy month for me, so not a ton of picks but the ones i do have are even more special and reliable.  this month was about keeping myself sane and healthy, which for the most part i did a good job of, minus the fact that i’m currently in bed with strep throat!  what were your favorites for the month of february?bbfebpicks5.jpg// skincare //

origins original skin retexturizing mask // this is a beautiful exfoliating mask with a base of rose clay, which is a gentle way to draw impurities out of the skin.  when you wash this mask off, you also get a very gentle physical exfoliating effect thanks to jojoba beads included in the mask.  this mask never makes my dry skin feel too dry or tight, just cleansed and purified.  highly recommend at least trying a sample – it’s the best clay mask i’ve ever used.bbfebpicks4.jpgpaula’s choice skin perfecting 2% bha toner // after struggling with my skin for the past 6 months, my dermatologist recommended me to add an antibiotic and differin cream onto the aczone cream that i already use.  and i decided that i just didn’t want to do it.  the creams are so drying on my already dry skin and i always react poorly to them for months.  after some hefty research, i decided to try the pc 2% bha toner which is great for clogged pores especially.  and after using it for 2 straight weeks, i am finally over the purging period and i am so impressed.  my skin isn’t perfect, but it is so much better and any pimple that i get clears up quickly and leaves much less pigmentation than usually.  all of this combined with the fact that i also went off birth control recently, this toner is a keeper for sure.  it’s also not drying!  at all!

// extras //

aesop resurrection hand balm // this hand cream deserves all the hype around it as well as the hefty price tag ($27).  it sinks into the skin almost immediately, leaving no grease or residue on the hands.  pretty sure this has single handedly saved my dry, overwashed hands this winter.  it is expensive, but absolutely worth it – and not even as or more expensive than some hand creams on the market, if that makes sense.  plus it smells delicious – a beautiful mix of woods and citrus that fades quickly.bbfebpicks3.jpgdedcool fragrance 02 // after wanting to try this dedcool fragrance for at least 6 months now, i finally bit the bullet just after the new year.  and i say this fragrance, because i knew that it was the exact one of the bunch that i would enjoy – mainly because it’s mostly sandalwood.  the inclusion of juniper is so gorgeous and very unique.  i can truly say this fragrance is like nothing i’ve ever tried or smelled before and i am absolutely in love with it.  it sits very close to the skin and settles to a warm, light sandalwood base.  dedcool is very nicely priced for fragrance ($70 for 50ml), nontoxic, vegan, and unisex.  according to the brand, “02 embodies the dark aroma of juniper mixed with green floral and sandalwood. This scent balances femininity with masculinity” and “intermingles rich hues of sandalwood and juniper berries to craft the unflawed musky blend of gender neutrality.”  of all the sandalwood fragrances that i own and love, this is the best of the bunch.  also, i got this at neiman marcus combined with a 15% off coupon they had for signing up for emails!

pura d’or shampoo // as i mentioned, i recently went off birth control, and i think that this caused my hair to start falling out.  now it really wasn’t bad at all and i managed to not panic too much, but i was still worried.  my sister recommended this shampoo and i love it!  not only has it helped the fall out (could also be that my body adjusted to the lack of extra hormones), but i love how it makes my hair feel.  it is sulfate-free and natural (?).  even if it didn’t help protect my hair against breakage and fall out, i would still love and recommend this.bbfebpicks2.jpg// entertainment //

girls season one // i absolutely adored girls when the first season was released.  the rest of the seasons just didn’t do it for me, but the first one is just as hysterical and well-written as ever.  highly recommend rewatching the first season whether you completed the series or not!

matilda on youtube // simple, to the point, and delightfully australian.  i just love her!  i find myself watching and rewatching her videos whenever i’m on youtube – also just having them on as background noise.  she shares my deep love for olio e osso balms, so really i don’t need to say anymore than that!bbfebpicks6.jpgbbfebpicks1.jpg

october picks

my notes say “november picks.”  *eye roll.*  and yes i have notes!bb oct picks1.jpgbeauty

clinique mineral sunscreen spf 30 // i posted a quick review on this on instagram, and my opinions have not changed.  this is truly the best mineral sunscreen i have found.  it blends into my skin easily and quickly, leaves it hydrated and dewy but not greasy, and rates a 2 on ewg.  what could be better?  well honestly the price and/or size, but hey, i’ll make it work.bb instagram1.pngfirst aid beauty hello fab coconut primer // the illuminating moisturizer/primer i’ve been searching for.  you’ve heard me mention the tata harper illuminating moisturizer, and while that was good, this is far superior.  a little dollop of this after putting on sunscreen and before putting on makeup gives me the healthy, glowing skin i strive for.  it’s kind of like if mac strobe cream, tata harper illuminating moisturizer, and becca backlight priming filter all had a baby.  first aid beauty is truly one of my all time favorite brands and this product is another reason why.  i actually bought the full tube but haven’t had to use it yet since sephora had a mini version as a 100 point perk.  i asked for 2 heehee.

embryolisse // i mentioned this in detail here so i won’t go too in depth.  basically this is a beautiful moisturizer that works especially when mixed with the above!bb oct picks3.jpgsephora gel future concealer in meringue // again, you know i love this!  meringue is my winter shade (yes we are almost there…) and it’s just a touch lighter than nars vanilla, which has somehow started to oxidize on me, but with the same pink undertones.  great replacement if you ask me!

alima pure pressed foundation in macadamia // ok this is getting repetitive.  let me just redirect you here and here.  i just got a couple more products from this line, mentioned here, and needless to say it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite beauty brands.  and i think you can tell how well loved this powder is.

vialed perfume in forest // i had a store credit to urban outfitters at the end of september so i treated myself to this little perfume that i wouldn’t have purchased otherwise.  call of the vialed is a rad perfumery that has unique sets but at a very high price point.  they released a collection of four unisex perfumes for urban outfitters, at just $20 each.  i couldn’t resist, so i chose the scent “forest.”  forest is described as a “green, earthy, and woodsy blend of neroli blossom, amyris tree sap, juniper berry, violet leaf, and rosewood, promoting stability + groundedness.”  this is the perfect description, and the aromatherapy benefits of this are real.  though the scent doesn’t last as long as other perfume oils (natural or not) i have, i appreciate this for those aromatherapy benefits and enjoy putting it on throughout the day.  i’ve been carrying it in the small makeup bag i keep in my purse or backpack and love having it on my person at all times.  it makes me feel clean and mindful, and i love the slightly herbaceous scent.

everyday coconut purely coconut hydrating shampoo and conditioner // i’ve been using this duo since mid-summer but never really mention hair products on here.  i got bulk sizes at my grocery store and i’m happy i did!  i prefer to use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, one for the health benefits, and also because they work nicely with my wavy hair.  i feel like my hair is in its most healthy and natural state when i use these products, and my curls and texture really come out.  i’m pretty basic with my hair, so these are perfect for me.  also, a tip for those of you just trying out sulfate-free shampoo – wash your hair twice.  i know it sounds like everything you shouldn’t do, but sulfate-free shampoos are not drying, so don’t worry.  they require more work to get all the product and oils out of your hair, so one wash tackles that and the second wash actually cleans the hair.  trust me!  it makes a world of difference.  i don’t think i would say these are “hydrating” in the sense that they make your hair soft and limp – they are really just a basic shampoo and conditioner.bb oct picks2.jpgfashion and lifestyle

jag jeans camo jacket // i love a good army jacket (and have too many), but have never really gotten into camouflage.  until now that is!  my sister and i both got this jacket at the end of the summer and it is truly one of my favorite purchases ever.  it’s just the perfect camo in that it’s not too over-the-top and is slightly muted in color.  my other sister even said that it really suits me, which is always a nice thing to hear.  also this jacket is the perfect weight and ridiculously soft…when does that happen?!

pendleton bathrobe // my mom got me this bathrobe last year for christmas, and i am sooo happy that it’s bathrobe season again.  and by that i mean that as soon as i get home, get out of the shower, wakeup, etc., this baby is on my body.  it’s huge and ridiculously soft and i love it!

fujifilm date 60af camera // i got this little camera at a thrift store for $2 (yes you read that right).  i was wanting a 35mm point and shoot camera and it was so excited when i stumbled upon this one.  i’m still on my first roll of film so i don’t know what the photographs will look like, but it seems like it’s in perfect working order to me.  i’ll keep you posted when i get the film developed!

burberry wallet // i have had this wallet for over 10 years!  my dad got it for me at harrod’s while on a special daddy-daughter trip to london.  i go in and out of using it, but this month it has been by my side every day.  you all know i usually use some sort of wallet pouch, but i’m enjoying the extra organization without any added bulk.bb oct picks4.jpgentertainment

harry styles’ first album // for whatever reason, i have completely fallen back in love with this album.  not that i felt out of love, but you know what i mean.  it is such a beautiful, unique, artistic collection of songs, each more vibrant than the next.  that man gives me the shivers every time.

alli cherry vlogtober // i love alli.  her spirit and mind, the aesthetic of her videos, her lifestyle.  she is such a pleasure to watch and her videos are always making me research or think about something new.  she’s a great influence for creating a cleaner, healthier lifestyle and i so appreciate that!  because i’m such a fan girl, i even purchased one of the totes that she and her husband released this month.  if they are still available, grab one!  the graphic was handmade by the couple and 10% of the proceeds go to the joshua tree national park association.  i’m dying to go to joshua tree (i know that’s not a surprise), so this got me a little bit closer!bb instagram2.png

i finally got the perfume of my dreams

bb santal1santal 33…oh how i love you.  now i previously thought that byredo gypsy water was the scent of my dreams, but i’m not sure.  lately it’s been seeming a little heavy for every day, but that could be because i’m spending every day at home!

santal 33 is light and fresh, with that delicious sandalwood touch that i cannot get enough of.  i have used up a few samples of this and just couldn’t seem to bite the bullet for the $150 bottle, until i saw that the le labo site sells a 15 ml bottle for $78.  now it’s still so expensive for the amount you get, but for the snail’s pace at which i go through perfumes, i think this little baby is going to be perfect.  i’m so excited to actually have a bottle of this in my life!bb santal3bb santal5one of my favorite perfume oils – maison louis marie no. 4 bois de balincourt – smells pretty much identical to santal 33, so i highly recommend that one.  there wasn’t really a point in me buying the le labo besides just wanting it!  i also love having spray perfumes to layer with my oils or if i want to make a slightly larger scent impact.  my perfumes are always very understated “skin scents” so sometimes it’s nice to have a little more intensity.

all in all, i’m so happy i splurged on this little baby.  it’s absolutely a gateway drug to the larger bottle, but i don’t see anything wrong with that!  what’s your favorite splurgy perfume?bb santal4bb santal2

the christmas wishlist

i-011642-santal-33-100ml-1-940.jpg71yuHh8MwAL.jpgsantal-sandalwood-diptyque-3700431400499-front_1024x1024.jpgle labo santal 33 perfume // this is a long time want of mine.  i actually have the maison marie louis no 4 bois de balincourt oil, which smells very similar to this, but there’s something about an actual perfume that feels a little bit fancier and more luxurious to me.

the wes anderson collection // i am having a major love affair with wes anderson right now.  i just watched the royal tenenbaums for the first time (i know i know, where have i been) and it was certainly one of the best movies i have ever seen.  my sister and i are making our way through all of his films, and i can’t take my eyes away from his style, creativity, and imagination.  i would love to have the wes anderson collection to view his magic all the time.

a cozy bathrobe // for whatever reason, this is what i want for christmas the most.  just a plushy, cozy bathrobe to wear every morning when it’s freezing and every night when i’m snuggled on the sofa.  it’s the little things, ya know?

diptyque santal candle // if you know me, you know i love sandalwood.  to me, there’s no scent as delicious.  and a diptyque candle?  who doesn’t have a diptyque candle on their christmas list?

tell me, what are you dreaming of this holiday season?
