recent eco beauty buys

and crazy obsessions.bb eco buys1.jpg100% pure cocoa butter lipstick in prickly pear // i picked up a couple products from 100% pure while  i was in new york and i have become a big fan of the company.  after seeing some of their instagram posts on this lipstick, i just couldn’t resist the color and the semi-matte formula.  i can honestly say that this is one of the only bold lipsticks i have ever felt confident enough to wear both during the day and out at night – the other one being nars damned.  the color is a stunning pinky coral and the finish is more matte than semi-matte, which i actually prefer.  it is so easy to apply even for a lipstick-nube like me and lasts forEVER.  when the actually lipstick wears off you get a stain on your lips that is pretty much identical to the original color.  if you have fair skin and don’t feel like you can pull off red that well but want a bold lip, check out prickly pear.  you won’t be disappointed!  i was concerned at first because the tube is smaller than a normal lipstick bullet, but the amount of product is the same as the bite beauty amuse bouche lipsticks and much greater than luxe ones like nars, urban decay, and ysl – .15 oz or 4.5 grams, and now i love that there is no excess packaging!

alima pure pressed foundation in macadamia // i was on a pressed powder foundation search and was leaning towards the mineral fusion one when i remembered how much alli cherry raves about this one from alima pure.  this was a few dollars more expensive from what i recall but worth the splurge, i promise.  the formula is perfect, giving you slight coverage and a subtle matte finish without looking cakey or even that matte.  the color is perfect for my summer skin and the great news is you can buy the refill pans for a discounted price when you need a new one – you never have to buy the compact again.  overall i’m very happy i decided to try this brand and this product and would recommend if you are looking for a reliable pressed powder with a nice shade range.

eminence mineral illuminator in chai berry glow // i am sooooooo happy i finally bought this.  i have wanted this product for the past 6 months – why are there some products we never get around to buying even though they aren’t any more expensive than other products we get without thinking twice?!! – after hearing sam raving about it on her channel.  this is a gorgeous pinky peach blush with a subtle glow (no visible shimmer).  it’s a perfect blush for lighter skin tones and i think it would be a beautiful highlighter for deeper ones as well.  it’s similar to my favorite rimmel santa rose blush but with more color and more glow.  the packaging is beautiful and so hippie luxe.  i can’t get enough!

sephora vib sale roundup

ok soooo i went a little crazy this year at the vib sale, but i am so amped on my purchases.bb sephora vib purchases 2017.jpgbite beauty lip pencil in 08 and 012 // i am not a lip pencil girl.  i owned a couple mac lip liners at one point but those suckers are dry and scary, in my opinion.  i’m also not one to line my lips before putting on another lip product, so i went into the bite beauty lip pencils wanting to wear them as is, as my matte lip.  and these are incredible for that! the shade 08 is the perfect peachy nude – i don’t always think peach looks good on me but i’m pleased with how this mixes with my skin tone and natural lip color.  012 is a cool light pink, very close to my natural lip color but a little more mauve.  they are deliciously creamy and pigmented, and incredibly comfortable on the lips.  i was planning on only getting 012, but i’m pretty stoked that i got 08 as well.  i don’t think i’ll get any other shades but they are launching more next week…bite just kills it – between my new purchases and the products i already have, they are pretty much all i use on my lips these days.

beauty blender nude // i used to have a beauty blender, then got into the real techniques sponge.  i like both.  neither is totally necessary for my usual routine, but i think it’s a nice tool to have if you are taking more time on your makeup or just in the mood for a super flawless face.  when my rt sponge crapped out, i added the nude beauty blender to my list.  i don’t love the super bright pink one and liked how natural this one looked so that’s basically my reasoning for this purchase 😉

biossance squalane and antioxidant cleansing oil // i mentioned in my april picks that i am really enjoying oil cleansing right now.  i saw the brand biossance was launched at sephora and,  having never heard of them, started to research what they were all about.  they are pretty awesome brand – all natural, plant based, good price point, innovative concept.  so yeah i’m all in.  i saw they had this cleansing oil so i decided that would be the full size cleansing oil that i use after i finish my travel size of the little barn apothecary blue yarrow and geranium cleansing oil.  my favorite part about this cleanser is that it rinses clean – usually with a heavy oil cleanser you need a face cloth to wash it away (water and oil don’t mix remember?!), but this is very light and very easy to wash off.  i’ve only used it once because i want to finish my other one first but i’m pretty pleased with my first impression.  plus i’m all aboard the squalane train at the moment.

tata harper illuminating moisturizer // so i did decide to splurge on this product (i talked about it in this instagram post).  i had been looking for a clean product to replace my beloved mac strobe cream, as well as one of tata’s skincare products to try.  i went through a whole sample of this from sephora, so i knew i wanted to get it by the time the sale came around.  while i wouldn’t use this as my only moisturizer, it is the perfect in between step before makeup and after lotion/oil.  it’s a peachy pink color that adds a subtle warmth to the face, and has actual diamond powder that creates the most stunning glow.  i feel healthy and fresh when i wear this, and i know the ingredients are doing great things for my skin at the same time.  pricey, but i think it will last me a while and the ingredients are worth it.

surratt relevee eyelash curler // i’ve had my eyes on this lash curler since it came out.  i had just gotten my shu uemera curlers at that point, so i put the surratt curlers in the back of my mind.  truth be told, while i at first thought they were amazing, i have not been happy with the shu uemera’s.  they don’t fit my eye shape well, so i end up getting my lashes either half curled, half straight or just completely wonky and somewhat painful.  i keep hearing great reviews of this beauty, so i figured i would try it out during the sale and return it if i didn’t like it.  and from the very first use, i knew it was my perfect curler.  it opens extremely wide so you have room to get your lashes inside and the shape is somewhat straight, which apparently fits my eye shape the best.  the curl i get is curled but very gradual, so my lashes don’t look like they are sticky straight up but rather curling naturally.  i’m so impressed with this little contraption, and since curling my eyelashes is one of my favorite looks right now, this guy is a total winner.

what did you pick up during the sale?

an impromptu new york trip

when you get the chance to take a quick trip to new york city, you do it.  ditch your boss, ditch your boyfriend, ditch real life and goooooo!  and no trip to new york is complete without some serious buyer’s remorse and an empty wallet, so here are the things that i picked up while there…and surprisingly, i don’t feel too remorseful!IMG_4312 (1).jpgsephora eye shadow in snakeskin dress // i have been looking for the perfect golden olive eye shadow for a little while now.  i was just about to splurge on mac’s sumptuous olive ($16) when i came across this sephora eye shadow.  overall i really think sephora’s eponymous makeup line is full of some really great hidden gems, and this eyeshadow is no exception!  it’s a huge pan, the exact color i wanted, and really high-end, all for $10!

sephora must have large powder brush // this is my all time favorite bronzer and powder brush.  it’s also probably the first makeup brush i ever owned, besides the ones that came in the bare minerals starter set (i got that for my 15th birthday and i was just over the  moon – hello introduction to makeup – i used to use all the powders all over so my face was reminiscent of a pumpkin).  i got rid of mine a while ago because the handle broke and i resisted buying a new one as they are relatively pricey, but i’m glad i finally splurged.

maybelline master strobe in light 100 // i spotted this randomly while at the drugstore one day.  it looks super pink in the tube, but is actually a really nice soft glow when i apply it to my skin.  i haven’t tried them, but i think this looks a lot like the glossier haloscope highlighters – they even have another more golden shade that is very reminiscent of the haloscope in topaz.  does anyone know if these are a good dupe for the glossier?

rms lip and skin balm // you might know that i absolutely love using vaseline as my eye cream at night, and on any really dry areas on my face and lips.  i know that vaseline is not actually the best for you, so i’ve been looking for an alternative to this staple product.  i read that this rms balm is basically the same as vaseline but all natural, so i decided to treat myself and see if this is similar/better/worse.  so far i really love it and feel like it is even more moisturizing on my undereyes and eyelids, but i really hate the smell.  i got the vanilla (i preferred it to the cocoa) but i hope that rms releases an unscented version.

surfistas travelogue // i spotted this mag (i think there is only one issue out right now) while in the lou&grey store on fifth avenue and i couldn’t leave without it.  it’s kind of a surfer/bohemian spirit travel guide, with this issue focusing on indonesia, venezuela, peru, and mexico.  i’m excited to read it cover to cover.  also the lou&grey store is so cool!  a must visit if you are in the area.

madewell northside sunglasses in spruce horn // i don’t think i’ve ever gotten a pair of sunglasses at madewell before, but i saw these and knew i needed them.  they actually remind me a lot of this ray-ban pair that i have been contemplating purchasing, but for a much more realistic price.  i really like the sort of black and tan stripey/tortoise pattern and they sit well on my face.  still a bit pricey but worth it and they are now on sale online!

gap modern long sleeve tees // i needed some basic long sleeve shirts and these are the best so i’m told!  they’re thick and stretchy, and are a nice length.  can’t feel bad about buying staples! (not shown)

may resolutions

as i was reading my bookmarked blogs this morning, i was struck by kate la vie‘s post about her may goals.  i immediately thought about what my own goals for may are, and i thought it was a genius idea to have a few goals for the month, as opposed to resolutions for the whole year that never seem to happen.  so here are mine:

continue with yoga // i was pretty consistent with yoga when i was in college, but fell out of the habit over the past year.  i’ve started attending classes again and i can already feel the difference in my mind and spirit, as well as my body.

continue reading // this sounds so lame, but i really wasn’t reading in college and this year i’ve really been focusing on getting back to my favorite hobby.  reading for me is stress relieving, calming, and relaxing and i can’t get enough.  i want to continue and not fall back into my no-reading habit.

shop less // where i live, online shopping is really the only shopping you can do.  and it is soooooo easy to press that place order button and then feel a wave of guilt for buying things that you didn’t need and didn’t even really want.  so i’m going to try my best to stop doing this…i’ve been pretty good the past few weeks and then yesterday i was on amazon and you know how that goes.  here’s hoping i can find some willpower.

have more fun // it’s way too easy for me to fall into a whole of being alone and not going out and being a hobbit.  but i also so enjoy going out and seeing friends.  so i’m forcing myself to enjoy myself this month.  not to get bogged down with work and other stresses and just have fun.  thankfully one of my best friends is moving back here TOMORROW so i know i’m going to be having lots of fun this month.  date your friends, people.

oh, may.  i’m so excited for you!

image.jpeg(accumulated over the past month)

wet-n-wild megalast lip color in spiked with rum and ravin’ raisin // really good matte lipsticks and so cheap!

sephora matte lip cream in shade 13 marvelous mauve // a great entrylevel matte liquid lipstick, great bold-but-not-too-bold color, great price point

neutrogena mineral sheers powder foundation in shade 10 classic ivory // great for added coverage and setting foundation/concealer, plus i really trust neutrogena as a brand

covergirl full lash bloom mascara // i saw this when i was hunting down my beloved lash blast length.  it’s not the same, but i do like it and am giving it a fair go.

milani lash trifecta // i picked this up on a whim (see above) on my way out of walgreen’s – i think it’s new?  surprisingly, i actually really like it!  it’s less natural than i would usually go for, but it lengthens and makes really pretty, fluttery lashes.  since i don’t curl my lashes, i like the bit of lift this gives.

essie starry starry night // i thought all of these were sold out when i found a few bottles at my walgreen’s!  this is a rerelease of one of essie’s most famous shades from the 80s. the original contained diamond dust with denser sparkle and was darker, but the rerelease is still beautiful.  here’s a great post explaining the differences.

essie peak show // i basically pick up every opaque white-pink nail polish i see on a hunt for the perfect one.  i have a post coming with more specifics.

madewell denim sunday shirtdress //  i got a gift card to madewell for christmas and have been saving it for just the right purchase.  i went to the mall in search of a dress to wear with tights for a work thing coming up, and i couldn’t leave without this!  it fits like a dream, is a little swingy, and hits at a nice place on my legs.  it will look amazing with black tights and my favorite black booties.

brandy melville for nordstrom bobbie knit // on my search for the dress above, i popped into my mall’s nordstrom and headed towards bp.  i noticed that there was actually a brandy melville section in my bp, which was really surprising to me.  i don’t usually shop at brandy – i liked to go when i lived in boston but never really bought anything – i hate that it’s one size cause a) i like everything oversized and b) that’s just absurd.  however, this is the softest, best fitting shirt EVER.  it’s loose and swingy and a little bit long, and has the sexiest deep v.  love.

the vacationers by emma straub // i’ve been wanting to pick this book up since summer 2014, and i finally got around to it.  i’m half way through and enjoying it – it’s nothing crazy or sophisticated, but so far it’s an entertaining read.

brain on fire: my month of madness by susannah cahalan // i am so excited to read this.  since dealing with my own mental health (hate that term) issues, i’ve found it very interesting and compelling to read and learn more about this subject.  this is about the author’s experience with a mental breakdown at 24 years old.  it’s also being turned into a movie, so i’m interested in what that will be like.  keep you posted.

back from the big city

i just back from a few days in new york and it was yet another whirlwind weekend.  it seems like i’m never in new york for a long enough time, but i guess that’s what happens when life and jobs are in the mix. needless to say i did some shopping while i was there…here’s what i picked up:

beauty

topshop nail polish in blue rinse, boy next door, and parma violet – these choices were definitely influenced by my favorite british beauty bloggers, including vivianna does makeup, essie button, and lily pebbles.  i’ve had a list of british beauty products that i wanted to check out for a while because of these ladies, so i was super excited when i happened to walk by a topshop while wandering around the city (topshop beauty products are hard to find in the us).  you can bet i went straight to their beauty department.  check out these posts to understand why i purchased these colors: 1, 2, 3, 4.

i currently have blue rinse on my nails and i have to say i’m really impressed.  i was worried because the first coat went on streaky, but the second coat made everything perfect.  these are really nice polishes and from the reviews i’ve read they last a pretty long time.  the color is gorgeous – it’s kind of in between essie bikini so teeny and lapiz of luxury.  loving it!

topshop lip ombre in baffle – the trick here is to use both of the shades to create an ombre lip look.  that’s not really my style, but i really like these shades, the formula, and the application.  and it’s so handy to have two lip colors in one little pot!  vivianna does makeup reviews the lip ombre here.

topshop lip and cheek smudge in wilderness – this shade is similar to my favorite nars matte lip pencil in damned.  the smudging brush on the other end of the color is perfect, especially because i like my lips to look stained and worn in when i’m wearing a bold color – sort of like you were just making out with someone ;).

maybelline lash sensational mascara in very black – i’ve had my eye on this mascara after reading that it’s a great dupe for the benefit roller lash.  it’s not my favorite mascara ever but i do like it.  i think it definitely opens my eyes and makes my lashes look more curled as is advertised.  it’s a little bit clumpy, but i like the brush and the length it provides.

clothing

madewell high riser skinny skinny jean in dusty wash – i was very excited to pick up these jeans after drooling over them online. the madewell high riser jeans are one of my favorite jean styles – my sister and i probably have every pair in the collection between the two of us. they are just the perfect fit – high rise, flattering, comfortable, perfect length, and actually feel like jeans, not leggings. i love grey jeans in the fall and winter because they add a little extra element to an outfit, and look great with black or plaid.

madewell ryder cardigan in heather fog – i’m always on the hunt for the perfect oversized, long cardigan. this one is exactly what i was looking for. it looks great over tee shirts and plaid shirts and sweaters alike, is perfectly slouchy and baggy, and hits at a nice place on the thigh. it’s also crazy soft and i know i’m going to throw this over everything, including pajamas. i’m probably (read: definitely) going to get another color.

recent additions to my life

IMG_2936 IMG_2924ok that sounds like i got a dog, but nope, just more shopping.  i’m horrible.

jack wills suede bag (not pictured): this bag is ameeeeezing!  real suede with a real leather strap and excellently slouchy.  the orangey tan color is beautiful but neutral and i think it will look amazing as it begins to wear in.  can’t wait to have this one for a long time.  and the best part?  i got it on sale so it cost me about $70.  pretty good deal for a 100% suede purse, if you ask me.  now i want the navy and the grey which just cannot happen.

butter london fiver: i’ve been on the search for the perfect, white based minty nail polish for a looong time.  essie mint candy apple is too dark and chalky, nails inc swan street is a little too green, essie find me an oasis is a little too blue and all of them have sucky formulas.  but then, i happened upon this beauty.  i believe it is from either a 2011 or 2013 collection and it is such a beauty.  pretty close to what i’ve been dreaming of.  it’s looking more green in the image above, but in real life it is like a much lighter, more faded essie mint candy apple.  ya know?

essie petal pushers: i had this in the mini version and loved it so much that i had to get the full size.  it’s the greatest color – blue, grey, sort of dark, sort of not.  not too dark to wear in summer, but still a little bit edgy.  it’s a very cool neutral shade in my opinion.

shashi bracelets: i’ve been wanting a small collection of shashi bracelets for years.  but since they are pretty much only available online, i’ve always resisted.  and then i saw them in an actual store!  i had just gotten my paycheck so i splurged and got 3 and even though they are ridiculously expensive for what they are, i’m really excited about them.

charlotte tilbury x norman parkinson matte revolution lipsticks: I’M SO EXCITED!  i love love love the matte revolution lipsticks (i got the shades glastonberry and lost cherry when they were released for a month a little while ago) and they are so dreamy.  i knew that i had to get these two when they were finally released since the formula is so amazing, these two colors are so beautiful, and they are limited edition.  did i need them?  absolutely not.  could i help myself?  absolutely not.  1975 red is the perfect orangey red shade for me because it feels slightly cool toned, so it’s not too orange for my very pink skin.  miss kensington is an amazing nude that basically looks like my lips but with a little something extra.  i am so glad i splurged on these, even if they were very unnecessary!

j brand maria jeans in blanc (not pictured): it seems like every few summers i get a new pair of jeans in my search for the perfect pair.  white jeans are definitely a summer staple for me, because they can be a little bit more dressy if you want them to be or casual if you want (i love white jeans with a basic tee and sandals) and look so good with a tan.  the j brand maria is one of my very favorite denim styles – the perfect high waist, perfect skinny, and perfect weight so when i saw this pair in the perfect shade of white, the decision to purchase was out of my own hands.
