warm weather bound

tomorrow me and (part of) the fam are headed to one of my favorite places…california, duh!  you know i love a good travel post, so here’s what i’ve got coming along with me >>

makeup:bb warm weather bound makeup.jpgnothing too exciting, but i’m bringing along the usual nars creamy concealer in vanilla, w3ll people bronzer and brightening powders, gabriel eyeshadow in sable, rms swift shadow in tt-73 (side note, i haven’t talked about this shadow but it is amazing.  so soft, so beautiful and is glowy instead of shimmery.  i’ve been wearing it every day since purchasing, even with nothing else on my face.  total love), tata harper volumizing lip&cheek in very charming, gressa lip boost in bare, mini bite beauty lipstick in meringue, shu uemera eyelash curlers, real techniques powder and expert face brushes, meow meow tweet baking soda-free lavender deodorant, and ursa major deodorant.  plus some hair twisties and clips, of course.

side note, does deodorant count as makeup or skincare?  probably skincare, but i’m bucking the system as per.

skincare (&liquids):bb warm weather bound skincare.jpgagain, the usual suspects with some fun stuff thrown in.  for example, i got a new sunscreen since my other one is too big for travelling and i’m not comfortable taking it out of its container and exposing it to sunlight.  so: mychelle sun shield, cetaphil lotion, mini trilogy mist, mini trilogy cleansing balm, dr tung’s floss (sexy), maison louis marie no.4 bois de balincourt perfume oil, weleda skin food, go-to face hero, dr. bronner’s hand sanitizer, living libations all seeing eye cream.

and the rest:bb warm weather bound plane bag.jpgthe other stuff in my plane bag includes another of the miss fisher series by kerry greenwood, the bookshop by penelope fitzgerald, and the house at the end of hope street by menna van praag.  just picked up those last two the other day and am really excited to start reading them.  wallet is from minor history, sunglasses from ray-ban, and headphones from bose – a lovely christmas from my sister quite a few years ago now.

jewelry: bb warm weather bound jewelry.jpgpretty pared down (for me) since i never end up wearing what i pack on trips anyways. tiffany silver bangle (my high school graduation present – it says dream a little dream), thin gold rings from various etsy shops, gold ball chain that can be worn as a necklace or bracelet, mermaidbyhand (now eliza sloane jewels) abalone ring, beaded earrings that were a gift from my sis, sarah chloe monogram necklace, salt&summit turquoise ring, vintage turquoise flower earrings which were a birthday present a few years ago, gold ear pins from etsy, and anthropologie gold ear jackets that were my birthday present this year.  dude, my family gives me good stuff!

so there you go my lovelies.  what are your travel must-haves?  what am i forgetting?!!

bb eco faves.jpgas i get older, i’m figuring out more and more how i want to treat and take care of my body.  from exercise (work in progress) to wearing sunscreen to figuring out some medical stuff, i’m trying to cherish this body i am in and help myself live my best life.  i’ve come to realize that there are certain things in my life that are nonnegotiable – acne and antidepressant medications, at least for right now – and that’s ok, as long as i do my best to balance it out.  one huge area for me in that regard is beauty and skincare (bet you didn’t see that coming…).  i spoke on my efforts to go more natural in this post last june, and wanted to do a little follow up.

as i’ve mentioned 1000 times, i’m very low key when it comes to makeup and skincare, but really enjoy the process of wanting, trying, and buying products.  while i’m always trying to cure this crazy need to consume, i’m really making an effort to consume more consciously.  so basically, if i have to buy a new blush, i’m making sure it has clean ingredients, rates well in terms of non-toxicity, and is not going to harm my body in the long run.  this can be tough and there are certain areas where i will not budge – almost anything nars obviously – but i think that is completely fine.

basically, i just want to do what is right for my body.  there are always circumstances in which we need a little outside help, but i believe so strongly in doing what we can to help ourselves, even just a little bit.  of course there are a million variables we cannot control, but why not do something about the variables we can control?

it can be extremely overwhelming to look at the makeup in your bag and the food in your fridge and think all of this is bad, so don’t look at it like that.  start when you can and where you can.  it doesn’t have to be everything.  any changes you can make to live a healthier lifestyle will benefit you in more ways than you can imagine.  and to help get you started, i’m going to be my middle-name-instigator self and fill you in on my favorite eco beauty and skincare products.

bb eco skincare faves.jpg
skincare

trilogy makeup be gone cleansing balm, used with eco/organic baby washcloths :: it’s all about the cleansing balms, guys.  my dry skin feels so much healthier and more hydrated, and i need less oil and moisturizer after using a balm cleanser.

go-to face hero oil :: i’ve waxed poetic about this many a time so i won’t bore you, but…best face oil ever.  jampacked with delicious ingredients – think no synthetics, parabens, petrochemicals, etc.

desert essence organic jojoba oil :: i’ve used this for a loooong time as both an eye makeup remover and face oil.  jojoba oil is one of the best matches to our skin’s natural sebum so it’s an excellent moisturizer.  you can also add this to make up for a more moisturizing and dewy look – basically it’s a great all-rounder.

kiss my face sensitive skin sunscreen :: my favorite facial sunscreen.  it’s very hydrating so best for dry to normal skin, but i love the moisturizing boost.  there is some debate because this contains the chemical octinoxate, but it is at an accepted amount as decided by the fda.  also it rates a 3 on ewg (a grading resource for product’s toxicity and health levels), so i’m ok with that for now and will just get something else when i run out.

evan healy lavender hydrosoul :: again, won’t bore you.  best facial spray of all time.  bye!

weleda skin food :: an amazing all over cream.  i use this under and on my eyes, around my nose when i’m dry, on my hands and cuticles.  you get it.  also it smells like a gin and tonic in the best way.

weleda hand lotions :: i love the sea buckthorn and am currently using the regenerating pomegranate.  non greasy and really beneficial if you have dry hands like me.

dr. bronner’s bar soap :: my favorite in-shower soap.  really simple and gets the job done, plus there isn’t any plastic packaging to deal with so that’s a big eco thumbs up (wow that was painfully dorky).  my favorites are eucalyptus and the baby/unscented version.

shea moisture body wash :: so luxe, so lathering.  filled with natural and organic ingredients and without parabens and sulfates.  not strictly eco, but the majority of their products, besides their hair coloring-system line, rate between 1 and 3 on ewg, which is pretty great.

body lotion :: this is more of my summer moisturizer but i adore the mountain ocean skin trip coconut lotion, which i’ve mentioned many a time.  it’s just a little too light for these dry chicago winters.

hair :: i’m not using any eco hair products right now but i love, and have repurchased multiple times, the acure ultra-hydrating shampoo and conditioner.

others :: i’m still on the hunt for a moisturizer to replace my beloved cetaphil and a good natural deodorant that actually works.  i just ordered the meow meow tweet baking soda-free jar deodorant and the ursa major deodorant stick to use together, and am currently doing a deoderant-detox before those arrive.  i’ve learned that layering is the best way to have success with natural deodorants, so i’ll keep you posted.  also an eye cream, but i have some contenders that i mentioned here.  also not mentioned, but you all know my weleda lip balm is my best friend.

makeup

w3ll people narcissist foundation stick :: in shade 0 this brightens my face and covers any redness with a few quick swipes.  blends out into almost nothing or definitely something depending on what you want.

w3ll people bio brightening powder :: the best setting powder, basically hourglass ambient lighting powders in mineral and nontoxic form.  a little glow and a little less shine.

w3ll people bio bronzing powder :: gorgeous bronzing powder for us bronzer addicts.  i wasn’t sure about mineral powder bronzer, but this is so perfect and lightweight.  it’s a great universal shade that can be applied very sheer and then built up.

tata harper volumizing lip to cheek :: i’ve had very charming since last summer and it is the perfect blue-based pink to add a natural flush and perkiness to the face.  i recently picked up very nice which is the light glowy pink of my dreams.

mineral fusion blush in flashy :: the prettiest slightly shimmery peach blush.  very subtle and very natural.  a hint of shimmer is there but not overpowering or obvious on the cheeks.  i don’t have it anymore, but i think this would be similar to hourglass dim infusion blush.

rms living luminizer :: a cult product for a reason.  the only highlighter i own and want.  it’s an icy dewy shimmer that gives that wet look to the cheek without being obvious at all.

rms eye polish in myth :: pretty much the only eye shadow i use these days.  very sheer taupe that looks glossy but stays.

pacifica stellar gaze mascara :: right now i’m using stardust (brown), but i had supernova (black) prior to this tube. this is my favorite mascara, eco or otherwise.  it’s natural but both volumizing and lengthening.  most importantly?  it conditions your lashes and gives them the attention they deserve!

gabriel eye shadow in sable :: the gabriel eye shadows are so nice!  very pigmented and smooth.  i only have this shade which is a taupey light brown that i love all over the lids and in the crease a little bit.  i thought it would be similar to urban decay naked, but it has a touch more purple/rosiness to it, in the best way.  very natural and very beautiful.  i want to get more of these eye shadows, maybe a dark brown next.

jane iredale eye shadow in cappucino :: i don’t have this at the moment because mine shattered and it is about $22 to replace it.  but this is one of my all time favorite eye shadows and is a great dupe for urban decay naked (that is my favorite “conventional” eye shadow so i compare everything to it!).  a staple for me!  i actually think i am going to pick up this palette of 5 shadows instead of just a new single shadow in cappucino – i don’t actually have any shadows in those colors/that are eco and it will be a great staple product.

pacifica enlighten eye shadow palette in mystical :: although i just picked this up, it’s already a favorite.  this 4-shadow palette has a stunning combination of shades and the formulas are incredible.  they feel as buttery and pigmented as lorac shadows, seriously!  and at $14 it’s a beautiful thing!

gressa lip boost in bare :: the prettiest almost matte tinted balm.  a light pinky nude that can also be worn on the cheeks!  quite similar to the tata harper very nice actually, but i prefer that formula as a blush.

ilia lipstick crayon in kharma chameleon :: i don’t know what’s better, the name or the shade.  this stunning hot coral has a satin finish and is perfect on a hot summer night.  i wore this to my sister’s rehearsal dinner and got many a compliment.  i can’t wait to brig this baby back out!

bite beauty matte lip pencils and multisticks :: now there is some debate over these because of some of the color dyes that they use, but to me these are ideal.  they are natural and actually food grade, and the color pay off and color options are incredibly.  i love the matte crayons – i have a couple mini ones in cafe and glace – because they aren’t totally matte but you can smudge them in to look like a stain, kind of how i use the nars matte lip pencils as well.  the multisticks are really cool and i have the color gelato which is a super cool toned light pink almost veering on lilac which is gorgeous on the eyes and cheeks and patted in lightly on the lips.

nail polish brands :: smith&cult (8-free), pacifica (7-free), rms (6-free), zoya (5-free), nails inc (5-free), and opi (3-free and i believe their infinite shine line is 5-free but i can’t find a definitive answer).  and frankly most polishes are 3 free!bb eco nail faves.jpg

bb eco beauty faves 3.jpg. . .

so there you have it, the eco products that i own and love.  please note that these are not all recent acquisitions and it has taken me a few years to get to this point.  again, i just want to reiterate that my switch to eco products is a work in progress.  i don’t think that i will ever be all the way there.  if i can even get to 50/50 i will be so happy.  and i don’t want to be over here making you feel like you need to throw away all your non-eco products either, because you KNOW i’m always going to be spending too much money at sephora!  all in all, we do what we can and what feels right for ourselves.  so let’s take it one day and one eco deodorant at a time, shall we?

ps: ewg is a great resource to learn about products and what chemicals make them better or worse in terms of safety.  they have a rating system with a catalogue of almost 65,000 products and you can always submit something if you don’t find it on their site.  it can be super frustrating when they don’t have a product or brand listed, but you can also search by particular ingredients and learn about a product that way.  if a product is rated a 1-2 it is of low hazard, 3-6 is moderate hazard, and 7-10 is high hazard.  they also have a list of products that are ewg verified and i think that products are going to start carrying this mark on their actual packaging.  these are products/companies that are free of any concerning ingredients, have ingredients fully disclosed, and follow good manufacturing processes.  i have the app on my phone and use it while i’m shopping for both food items and products.

also pps: do your research!  actually more mainstream products than you think are more eco friendly than you think – a lot of too faced products, for example, rates extremely well on ewg.  it always helps to do your research before making any decisions.  plus a lot of sites like sephora will tell you when a brand is formulated without something – like parabens or sulfates.  it’s a bragging point for sure so you can usually find it mentioned!!

part three: the lips. all matte, all the time.IMG_4402.jpgIMG_4405 (2).jpgwhen i just need a little moisture, i have to use the weleda lip balm.  it’s my absolute favorite lip balm as it’s unscented and unflavored, clear, slightly matte, and on the waxy side.  it sinks in quickly but also coats the lips, so it’s not like it completely disappears a few minutes after you apply it.  i have handful of these in different pockets and purses, so it’s always exciting when i come across one!

if i’m feeling something nude, i either use the milk makeup lip color in c.r.e.a.m. or the milk makeup lip pigment in swear by.  c.r.e.a.m. is a beautiful rosey-nude shade that is extremely similar to my natural lip color but with a little more oomph.  i blot this on and it lasts for quite some time, while fading very evenly and naturally.  swear by is more peachy-nude, which i don’t usually like, but this shade seems to be an exception.  plus i like that i can just blot it in with my finger.  the texture is sooo cool, almost marshmallow-y, and turns into a powder almost immediately so it’s super matte but not super drying.

if i want something a little darker and a little more grungy (when do i not?!), nars velvet matte lip pencil in bahama is my go to.  it’s a pinky brown that looks so good, again, blotted on and i even like mixing it with the c.r.e.a.m.  it’s dark but not too dark by any means, and somehow it is similar to my lip color again, so it’s super natural but with a little extra.  these matte pencils are my all time favorite lip formula and i have a ton, but this one leads the pack.

so now that you know what’s usually on my face, tell me what’s on yours?! my images, please credit if taking.

IMG_4237.jpganother month, done and dusted.  i am definitely looking forward to changing leaves and cooler weather, but am also sad to see summer go.  here were my favorite items for the last month of summer:

my glowy skin routine // i went into some depth on these products here so i won’t bore you anymore

combination of tata harper very charming and nars impassioned // these two blushes are a beautiful combination.  the tata harper is a bolder pink, while the nars is a neutral blush pink, but they work together beautifully.  i also like that i am in a way setting my cream blush, so i know my flush will stay for the whole day.

mac 187 brush // i feel like i change up my makeup brushes pretty frequently, so recently i’ve gone back to this old favorite.  i love how softly it applies powder products, setting and bronzing my face very subtly.  it does shed slightly, but nothing too bothersome as some people have said.

real techniques expert face brush // i’ve been using this to blend out my cream face products and it is perfect.  it’s dense but not too dense, so it blends out the products well but doesn’t apply them in a too concentrated way.  does anyone have the mac 170 brush?  it looks similar to this and the sigma f80 but i really want to try it!

weleda buckthorn hand lotion // weleda is definitely one of my favorite skincare brands.  i use their lip balm, skin food, and now this hand lotion.  it sinks in almost immediately, smells like vacation, and has been making a difference in my hands’ hydration.  love!

tamira jarrel // an old favorite youtuber that i have fallen back in love with.  i love how calm and real she is, and this extends to her approach to makeup.  she also has a great blog, visit it here.

slaughterhouse-five // i picked this up at my local free book drop off, and though it’s not really a “beach read,” i loved this all the same.  it took me only a few days to read, which is saying something as i haven’t been this into a book in months.  i really enjoyed it, both the mystical elements and the very very real ones.  i definitely recommend this, especially if you haven’t read kurt vonnegut before.

komono renee sunglasses // i got these sunglasses last summer, and while i liked them then, i love them now.  they are the only sunglasses i have been wearing the past month, probably because i can put them on my head and not get all my hair stuck in them the way i do with my aviators.  i also love the brown lenses and the tint they give to my world!  a great staple pair of sunglasses.

new discoveries

nars long hot summer palette // i’m not one to really buy into limited edition releases in the beauty world, but when i saw this little palette i could not resist!  the shades are subtle but special and i love every single one (when does that happen with a palette?!).  you do NOT want to miss out on this one.

weleda skinfood // i picked this up at my local health food shop because i love multi-use products and i love the weleda brand (i’m addicted to their lip balm).  i’ve been using this primarily on my eyelids when they feel dry and under my eyes when they’re a little baggy.  it’s a beautiful product and i love the smell – beware, it is a bit medicinal.  after buying, i happened upon this into the gloss article while researching it’s many uses, so that’s pretty cool too.

captain blankenship mermaid salt spray // i picked this up about a month ago after wanting it for so long.  it was definitely worth the wait.  it’s one of the better salt sprays i’ve used – adding a little bit of texture and body and that just-swam-in-the-ocean look.  plus i love the smell – super peppery and fresh.  plus it makes me feel like a mermaid (basically my goal in life).  i’m not sure if i like this better than my plantfolk apothecary messy hair, but they are definitely tied.

a little life by hanya yanagihara // this book is absolutely stunning – stunning in it’s tragedy.  i can’t really synopsize it, at the risk of oversimplifying the plot.  please check it out.

the summer wind by madeleine peyroux // the summer wind (frank sinatra) has always been a favorite song of mine – probably because it is my parents’ song from when they were dating.  madeleine peyroux’s version came on one day while i was at work and i just can’t get enough.  i love how one of my favorite artists reimagined such a classic song that i didn’t think could get any better.  also it came out in 2006 so how have i never heard this before now?!

the messy heads // i recently stumbled upon this blog – i was in some sort of internet time warp so i have no idea how i got to it – and it’s pretty much my favorite blog of the moment.  california cool girls posting about life, love, music, magic…what could be better?  they also have a print edition, so i’m dying to get my hands on that as well.  and the name??  THE NAME!

rediscoveries

nars laguna bronzer // every summer when i get a little bit tanner, i bring out nars laguna.  i don’t know why but it is the absolute best summer bronzer.  it enhances your tan while adding a little bit of shimmer and glow, but never looks over the top.  i swear by it!

mac pinch o’ peach // i’ve had this blush for a little while, but didn’t full appreciate it until i, again, got a little bit of tan.  now it is my daily go to.  it’s just the perfect hint of summery flush and it lasts all day.

glossier priming moisturizer // when i first bought the glossier phase 1 kit (probably almost 2 years ago), i wasn’t too thrilled with the priming moisturizer.  it was good, don’t get my wrong, but it wasn’t as good as my go to cetaphil.  when my sister gave me her tube, however, i realized how great a product this is.  i’ve been using it more as a primer after i put on my cetaphil, but also as a moisture refresher if it’s later in the day when i’m putting makeup on.  i like the extra boost it gives and maybe it’s a placebo effect, but i think i look a little juicier with it on!

decor blogs // these are definitely not new reads for me, but this month i’ve been giving them a lot more love than usual.  you have probably seen these credits in my decor dreams posts, so i thought i would give them a shout out here too.  my favorites at the moment are remodelista, lobster & swan, sf girl by bay, and jersey ice cream co (a company often featured on remodelista).

that’s chic youtube // i’ve followed rachel on youtube for quite a while, but her most recent content has gotten me hooked again.  her videos are so dreamy and calming, and i’m totally inspired by her aesthetic and vibe.  some of my favorites are her carmel vlog, her recent q&a, and her apartment tour.

high ponytails // ok this is a weird one.  but for some reason, when my hair is not super long, i hate how it looks in high ponytails – it just looks short.  but now that my hair is pretty long again, i’m loving it tossed up high, but still hanging down quite a bit.  does that even make sense?

all natural, all happy

IMG_3969 (1).jpg

when i first started reading beauty blogs and watching videos, i wanted to buy every single product these people were talking about.  no matter how expensive, i wanted it.  and i will say that i did buy more makeup than i ever had before.

however, as i mentioned in this post, i don’t wear a lot of makeup!  so over the past few months, i’ve stopped buying beauty products that i don’t need and will never wear, and i’ve really been focusing on the products that i love and that i really want to use.  in doing so, i have realized that many of my favorite beauty products are all natural.  i’ve been making more of a conscious effort to really research the products that i use and want to use.  i am also only buying cruelty free products, but that is another post entirely!

i entered the realm of all natural beauty a long time ago, but was not as fully interested in it as i am now.  i mentioned my foray into natural products here, and as i get older i really am trying to do what’s best for my body – including what goes into it and what goes on it (that is a really weird sentence, i’m sorry).

ok, long winded intro over, here are some of my favorite all natural products that i have been using and loving for a long time:

weleda lip balm – my favorite.  i have too many tubes of this all over my house.

heritage store rose spray – a solid facial spray at a solid price, nice and simple!  they also have a rose and glycerin version for added skin benefits, aka moisture (can someone remind me to take this out of my car?  even though that’s really a perfect place for it?).

heritage store lavender spray – i use this mainly at bedtime, on my pillows and sheets.

evan healy lavender hydrosoul – not pictured because i left this at home and a new one is in the mail – i didn’t realize how incredible this product was until i was no longer using it.  the amount of moisture, glow, and life it brings back to the skin is incredible.  it smells like absolute poop – seriously i thought mine was rancid – but i guess that’s just because of the uber natural and fresh ingredients?  expensive ($25 for 4 ounces) but i am realizing that i really love this guy.

mountain ocean skin trip coconut moisturizer – just the best body lotion EVER.  seriously, ever.

rms living luminizer – i wasn’t using this as much after summer was over, but i pulled it out again and i don’t know how i went a day without it.  it gives similar results to putting something like the glossier balm dotcom on the cheeks – just a glow that’s coming from you, not from some crazy highlighting powder.

plantfolk apothecary messy hair – my go to salt spray/beach spray/hair product – you guys know i love this.

lavanila sport deodorant – a few months ago, i freaked out about deodorants/antipersperants and their effects on women’s breasts.  after recently dealing with a breast health issue of my own, i went out in search of a deodorant that would be effective but not harmful to my body.  i tried crystal deodorant (not my thing) and tom’s (meh) before trying out the lavanila sport deodorant from sephora.  this is a bummer because it is expensive compared to a drugstore deodorant ($16 for 1.8 ounces), but this really works!  it’s a very generous size tube, smells amazing, and is actually an effective deodorant.  yay!

goldie’s amber coconut leave-in conditioner – i got this last summer and it is the best leave in conditioner i’ve ever used (i haven’t used many but you get it).  it smells absolutely incredible and really really works.  i’m in need of another one soon actually.

kuumba made amber & sandalwood fragrance oil – try as i might, perfume really makes me nauseous.  but i absolutely love sandalwood and really musky, natural, woodsy scents like that.  this fragrance oil is dope.  it lasts forever, offers just a hint of scent (depending on how you apply) and makes me feel so sexy and bohemian and free.  i love this.

pacifica stellar gaze mascara in supernova (black) – this is a newer purchase that i got at my local whole foods a couple months ago.  i mentioned before that i haven’t been able to find a mascara that i like, but i really love this guy!  it’s very natural but can be built up if you want it to be more obvious, plus i feel like it’s actually doing good stuff for my eye lashes.  so on the rare occasion that i’m wearing mascara these days, it’s always this.

///

also, since i mentioned cruelty-free products, i will go a little more in depth here.  it’s important to note that all natural products are not necessarily cruelty free.  and cruelty free products are not necessarily all natural!  however, the more i research, the more i realize that that are quite a few main stream, popular, and/or high end brands that are cruelty free which is incredible.  and, almost all of the products that i already use are cruelty free.  that being said, i am trying to phase out the ones that are not cruelty free, and find new alternatives (which is really fun!).

it’s important to keep in mind that there are many different levels in the cruelty free world.  while many brands are cruelty free, their parent companies may not be. for example, nars, bare minerals, and buxom are all cruelty free brands.  however, they are owned by the parent company shiseido, which is not cruelty free.  companies that are sold in china, where animal testing is required, cannot be considered cruelty free.  if you’re not sure if something is cruelty free or not, look for the leaping bunny on the packaging or the words “not tested on animals” – many products will tell you if they are cruelty free or not.

for me, i am ok as long as the brand itself is cruelty free, but for many this is still unacceptable. it all depends on your own feelings on this issue.  all i can say is that the more you do your research, the better you feel with your choices and your impact on these issues.  by no means are all the products i use all natural or cruelty free, but as i move forward, i am making my purchases more wisely.

all natural, all happy
